Great video! Definitely agree on those tips. Regarding a limited palette: if people want variation, you can tweak the highlight colours you blend in, giving each region of a colour a different feel. Also, overbrushing isn't just good for quickly painting a region. If you're spending more time on a mini, it's also useful for adding texture if you want to vary regions' materials. The eye method mentioned is also obscenely useful. Can attest, use it myself. Just gotta be careful not to flood the eyes when adding the skin wash!

Thanks for watching my friend! You bring up some good points, I use overbrushing all the time it's just so handy! I generally paint the basecoat of the face before the eyes but both methods are incredibly useful imo. I couldn't imagine any reality where I would paint the eyes after the face! 😄

@@TheHobbyGrotto Any tips on getting the colour to match with faces when correcting? I've tried what you described, but once the wash goes over, I always worry that if I, e.g., overspill on the white, my corrections will stand out/won't match sufficiently.

I just correct with black, that way once you add the highlights it covers everything but the thin blacklining around the eyes. If you have done lots of corrections its probably better to reapply both the base and the wash, just keeping it out of the eyes 😀

I am a big believer in limited color palettes. It makes models actually pop more. Primary, secondary, tertiary. Beyond that, it's rainbow vomit. For the pupils of eyes, there's an ultra fine 0.1 black pen for manga. A single tap will do the trick. Another REALLY quick way to paint a model is black primer then do a light spray of white for directions lighting then lightly dry brush secondary lighting if desired. Next, paint base coat with inks which will preserve the directional lighting effect of the black and white underneath. Finally, edge highlight with complimentary paint to your ink base coat, do some simple details if needed and your done.

All great points, I love using limited colour pallettes! I should really check out those marker pens, I think it would be a fun experiment! 😁

unless you are painting a primary character, it is best to paint a group of models at the same time. especially if it's for an army style game. usually 4-6 models is a good amount. by the time you are done applying a color to the final mini, the first mini is dry and ready for the next color. this also brings consistency to the Army, as you are repeating the same color to the same areas on each of the models.

Agreed! Batch painting is key to getting large armies done, I've been thinking about making something like this for a while as I think it needs it's own video! 😃

@The Hobby Grotto another point to make to avoid 'burnout'. switching styles of mini's. if you painted a squad of 10 spacce marines, take a break from them. paint a detailed age of sigmar mini or a couple of necromunda characters. then go back to the space marines. but instead of another squad, maybe paint some bikes or support weapon team or terminators. by rotating thru different types of pieces, you keep things new and interesting. it allows for different painting techniques and maybe ideas to 'improve' models already painted.

Definitely! I tend to mix it up often because I get bored of colour schemes, maybe too often 🤣 maybe I need to focus more and get some armies done!

Batch painting does work for getting armies done, but I also think it helps to find the optimal batch size for you, as a painter. Otherwise you can get burnt out by the repetition.

Very true. I generally paint in small batches of 2-3 minis because I tend to get burnt out when I paint larger amounts. I do however like to do basecoats on a whole group of minis, like when drybrushing is involved, can do 10-20 or more in one go, then I will go back and do the details on small groups.

I've done this before on models where I think its appropriate to just have white eyes! Actually anything with no pupil is a great bonus! 😆
