Yes, the same concept is used in taekwondo 👍. It seems specially difficult to grasp for newbies in the case of changing from the horse stance to the side step, where many people tend to "rotate" the body as a compass or to move the foot past the side position instead of orienting the foot (and hence the body) to the side.

For me, the footwork is the most important thing in a fight, then comes the upper body.

Well done Yusuke that's the right way teaching learning keep adapting you make it the only confidence the to learn the will to teach to have no form or no specific way which will always allow you to adapt always improve always get better excellent analysis every movement every aspect must always be at the sharpest highest caliber with hesitation or restraint be well balanced in all areas of attack standing air around sharpen all senses peace be well fight on 👊👍

„Use your foot you're executing the technique, kata etc. with to steer your body.” ~ Always point into the direction where you want the energy to thrive to. For my mind this helps me quite a lot, because I sometimes subconsciously have my feet at an angle.. especially on the left side.

A great video. These small details make quite a difference and they are so hard to fix once a person learns the movement in a wrong way :-)

Cool, I noticed it seems like fencing could be more inclined to point the back foot out to the side rather than forward and do the zombie drag, when stepping forward in free style sometimes? And becoming a smaller target with fencing.

Boxing and Muay Thai have similar concepts, though it’s more subtle and is usually taught in more intermediate concepts. Quite interesting that Karate also teaches this!

Yusuke-san, thank you for everything you put up here on KZbin. I'm pretty new to karate, and you're helping me tremendously! I have a question - in a front stance, why do you open your back foot? To me this looks like it would be harmful to your knee or something, no?

While doing Mawashi geri, is pointing the foot towards front side possible? My foot automatically turns to the side way during the kick..

I think during the kick (i.e. when the kicking leg is in the air already), it is ok to turn the standing leg. I think the video is about the lead-up to the technique.
