Following your guidance on this, and having totalled up the matts i need (not including the paints and tools i already have), for less than half the cost of one "professionally made" mat, i'll be getting materials to make 4 2x2' mats for A Billion Suns, 2 3x3' mats for SW Legion, and a 6x4' mat for general gaming in other systems like flames or 40k, thanks man, this is such a nicely put together video, really clear and concise on the process and techniques, absolute breeze to follow :)

Cool tutorial, subscribed. I have previously been using water to thin acrylic caulk, but will try isopropyl alcohol. My only added suggestion would be to check out fabric stores for the base material, rather than DIY stores. Are you able to provide a supply list of what you used? I get this is an older video, but I love the ease of what I am seeing looking to do a couple for my Frostgrave/Stargrave/Gaslands group.
@RFDHobby2 жыл бұрын
Sure mate. I use a cheap acrylic gap filler (the cheapest I can find), along with fine sand (sold here at the hardware store as Playground sand). In this video I used Isopropyl alchohol, although I've since completed a larger version using just water to thin the mix. Then it's just some cheap acrylic paint to color if you want too at that stage of the process. I spread this out onto a sheet of plastic backed canvas drop sheet (commonly used by painters to avoid spills and drops). I hope this helps, good luck with them, and let me know if you have any other questions at all, I'm happy to help if I can.
@ollep91424 жыл бұрын
Neat and simple, just the way we want it! Two questions: 1. Why the emphasis on having a perfect square with the exact dimensions? For most wargames "big enough" is good enough. 2. What's the purpose of adding sand to the filler? What happens if you don't?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I felt like having it neat and clean was fairly important, it's probably more important for me than it is required generally though. Adding sand to the filler will help with adding a texture to the finish. You could leave this out, however you will likely end up with a very smooth finish on the board. The sand doesn't make it gritty as such, but helps to give it a slightly rough surface. Both of these things are essentially optional I guess, but the small details will help to sell the idea when you're finished. Let me know if you have any other questions.

That’s awesome. I want to make roads and paths for my miniature villages…can you add foliage for grass?
@RFDHobby3 жыл бұрын
You certainly can glue on foliage or tufts of grass. I haven't for any of mine so far simply because I'm rolling them up to store them, and it would probably end up ruining the tufts and stuff. But if you're making smaller pieces, or storing it flat, it would work out fine I think. Good luck. Thank you for watching and commenting. Let me know if I can help further.

@@mariobaleywah1260 I think the best option may be to draw on the grid system once everything else has been painted on there. You could press in the grid system into the acrylic before it dries, but I'm not sure it would stand out, and you may run into issues while doing itas the acrylic dries fairly quickly. Great video, I'll be trying my hand at a few of these. It would be helpful if you put links to the products used in the description so folks can find it by its specifications rather than name. Here in the USA, the two key components are known as poly backed (or coated) canvas drop cloths and acrylic latex caulk. "Filler" usually means similar products used for driveway cracks or wood. In the last shot, it looks like the edges are curling up, presumably from the cured latex? I wonder whether, if you didn't have the plastic backing, you could apply a thin layer of caulk to that side to offset it, in the same way you would with white glue on chipboard.

Thanks John. Great idea for the materials, I'll try to update the description over the next week with the materials and some of the info you provided here for the folks in the U.S. As for the mat curling, it's not really noticeable at all at this stage, but I'll be keeping an eye on this one and testing a few things out before the next one, so I'll be troubleshooting any issues and providing updates in the future. Thanks again for your comment.

Nice build, and not a topic I've ever seen anyone tackle. The video is relatively new, so you might not be able to answer this yet, but how does this method work over time? Do you get cracking, or does it retain its flexibility?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, so far I've had no issues with the mat, I'll be updating this as time goes on though, as quite a few people have asked about it. It's remained flexible and no cracking so far, and I'm quite confident it will be fine in the short term. Thanks for the comment and question mate, it's worth having a go.

Well, this is a pretty old video at this point, but hey, it's new for me. Just wanted to say thanks! I'm going to make a full sized 40k one. In the past, I've made tabletop tiles out of MDF boards painted up (my gaming past was before battlemats) but they're bulky and hard to store. Mats I can slide into some tubes look like a MUCH more practical idea, but the huge costs of store bought mats are very off-putting. Thanks again! Can you offer a link to a similar product as the plastic backed canvas you used? Just so as I can know exactly what I'm looking for.

How is the durability? How can you store these? Can you roll them up and put em in a poster tube?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
So far so good, and yes it rolls up fine. Ends up feeling like a thin rubber mat. Not sure if it'll be difficult to lay out flat after being stored rolled up. I'll try it out though. Could always hang it as well i suppose. Thanks for the comment mate.

Out of Curiosity, could you add Flock to this with a Flocking Tool to create a grassy field and not have any flock detach over time?
@RFDHobby3 жыл бұрын
You could certainly add flock to it if you wanted too, but I couldn't guess how well it would hold over time. I'd also be interested to find out though. Thanks.

looks great Dude. Have you done any moon terrian?
@RFDHobby3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I'd love a moon terrain board. I've tried some craters, but they were more for this kind of setting where it was roads and grass and stuff. But I'm pretty sure they would transfer to moon terrain quite easily.

great build mate. could you add spray-on varnish at the end to make it more durable or does it crack and go ugly when rolling up the mat?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. Honestly not too sure about the varnish, but I figured with the rattle can base coats and coloured filler base, a bit of wear wouldn't stand out too much, but I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the comment mate.

Hey Denise. Thanks for the comment. I'm happy to answer any questions you have regarding any of the builds or processes you see in the videos. I'm actually in Queensland, so yes, you should be able to find most of the things I use locally. A lot of the stuff is from either Bunnings or Office Works, but if you aren't sure, just throw a comment on the video and I'll be sure to answer it and help out if I can. Cheers.

Did you use varnish or anything to protect the painted mat?

Hi James. Nothing at this stage, I'll see how it goes over time, but so far no issues without it that I can see.
@anthonysanzeri87562 жыл бұрын
New to your channel but i absolutely have to try this one out it looks awesome. I see there is a bit of eyeballing for mixture consistency, what should the consistency end up as something akin to pancake batter or bread dough or something else?
@RFDHobby2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Anthony, make sure to check out the newer video I did of this build kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYKam4BpmLhol9k as I changed the ISO alcohol for water, and saved a few bucks. The mix is very much bit of a guessing game, you want something probably just a bit thicker than pancake mix. It shouldn't be runny, but really easy to spread around. Let me know if I can help further mate.
@anthonysanzeri87562 жыл бұрын
@@RFDHobby Have you experimented at all with patches that are extra rough but not the entire mat? I was thinking of sprinkling some "rock" (fish tank gravel) and sand across parts of the mat before it dries to create a rocky/grass mat (think opening terrain from Rogue one). I'm worried about the rough spots flaking off or impacting rolling up for storage, any thoughts?
@rakhaut38872 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, it's been a while, but do you know what paint you used - acrylic or other?
@RFDHobby Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I only use acrylics. For the base colours it was straight from the rattle can, then details added with acrylic airbrush paints.
@52Miniatures4 жыл бұрын
Nice work! How do you think it would be to get some textures in there? Like a sandy gravel texture? Or some kind of crackle effect?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex. I've been thinking about this, it seems like you could use a texture roller after an hour or two of drying time (to help stop the acrylic filler from being too sticky), this should hold well. I think using a course sand would bring up a gravel like texture, although may be slightly harder to spread. I'll be playing around with some different things on the next couple of mats, so I'll let you know if I come up with anything to better answer this question for you mate.
@52Miniatures4 жыл бұрын
@@RFDHobby Yeah, that's a neat idea. Maybe a "roof stucco roller" or something. I know I've seen natural sponge rollers to at some point.
@corvusboreus20724 жыл бұрын
If you add too much sand, or it has too course a texture, it can cause the caulk on the surface to develop cracks. And yes, you can apply texture with things like rollers whilst the surface is 1/2 dry. I did some sections of cobbled road with a bodgied up roller (modelling clay wrapped around a jam jar then dimpled) and it came up OK.

Holy Emperor. I have never even considered this method 😲 It looks absolutely fantastic 🙂 How much time would you say this took?
@RFDHobby4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Oh it was really quick, probably 20-30 mins to get the mix onto the canvas, and then another hour or two to paint it up once it dried. I had to leave it overnight to dry once the filler was applied though.
