This tutorial shows how to make 3 different unique simple chain styles. I have found that I occasionally need a short length of chain for my pieces, and making your own isn't too hard. There are tons of variations possibilities with these, so have fun experimenting! I would categorize these as mostly beginning or intermediate level. The materials for these can vary, but for these ones, I used 14 gauge sterling round wire, 18 gauge sterling round wire, and 12 gauge sterling half round wire. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful? Scroll down for information on my new Patreon!

Beautiful work as always Chad. I like the last one the best, it reminds me of anchor chain. Thanks for sharing and take care.

Thanks Gazz. I like that one too, although that’s the most laborious of the three:)

Very nice chains. I especially like the double twist one, very quick and easy to make. I want to make some of the hair kabobs and I like the idea of putting chain on them, those pick pieces can so easily get misplaced.

Thanks Bees! My wife used to always lose the peg part on kabobs she used to buy, so I added a chain whenever I made one:)

Nice vid as per usual. I have made 2 of these links before, so I will now try the third example. I tend to use a third hand when I need to protect a chain link while soldering. These links are also nice if you want to add another element like a bead, if you are in to those sorts of bracelets.

what an inspirational video...i am now going to make a chain for a pendant i JUST finished and was going to hang on leather cording...what was i thinking?...do i have to solder the "eight" link chain? or can i get away without having to?...

Hello Krautgirl:). You could probably do it without soldering, but 18 gauge is pretty easy to bend, and it may not be as secure as you’d like.

Got a challenge for you! Instead of soldering your rings and chains, try fusing them!

I've tried that in the past without much luck in consistency; perhaps it's time to revisit it:). Thanks for the good idea Dianne!
