Awesome video. Last week I used all your instructions and painted my mother's desk. She has a small wood, solid desk that she wanted to keep but it was not in good condition. I made my chalk paint using your instructions and today she texted me saying she loves it more every day. Thank you so much! We spent less than $50 with new hardware for the drawers and everything. Now she has a beautiful desk with character and a story about how her daughter brought it back to life!

This is an easy, step-by-step, tutorial. I like how you had the separate measuring cups of different sizes, good visual presentation. People will remember the recipe so easy. The finale was the icing on the cake...when you spoke about the small obstacles to watch out for when choosing a product to seal with and the ending when you explained a few complications you experienced while using the chalk paint that you mixed and why it happened and how to correct it from happening to those of us who will try these techniques ourselves. Wonderful Video!

Try adding the plaster of paris to water, not other way around. And use hot water. I use more water so I can shake the plaster of paris water mixture. Then you need to leave the container so the solids settle to the bottom of the water. Throw the excess water off and add your paint. Use a kitchen sieve and strain the final mixture through it...

Thanks for putting up this video. While my stepson was at work, I, my wife, and his wife did a quick job on an old coffee table that was sitting in his basement disassembled. When he came home from work, he thought we had bought him a new table for Christmas! Sanding and painting it only took a few hours and it was dry to the touch when he saw it. Awesome stuff. My wife and I had done chalkpaint on some of our furniture but we bought it from a boutique and it cost quite a bit of money. This was super cheap and looked just as nice. We also put it on an old oak colored florescent ceiling light housing and it gave it new life and made it match much better with his kitchen.

I followed these directions, but used drywall compound. I then coated it with 3 coats of Polyurethane (added 10 % water so it didn't dry quite so fast, as you can end up with brush strokes). It was an old, dark brown, antique desk that was in poor condition. I did sand the piece with a small, hand sander briefly, as there were areas where the finish was flaking off, and I wanted good paint adhesion. As well, I wanted a smooth texture, which is something I wouldn't have gotten had I left it unsanded. It turned out fabulous and it is holding up very well to daily use by our 4 children who use the computer on this desk to in our homeschool. Thank you! You saved me time in priming and money over purchasing real chalk paint. :-)

When I distress, I use the wet method. I let the chalk paint dry for maybe 20 minutes, then take a clean lint free rag , soak in water and wring out as much as possible, then start off lightly rubbing where you want to distress, and put as much pressure as you need to get the look you want, works great.

This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find. I just spent 3 weeks building a crib mattress size farmhouse daybed for my dog. Needed a decent piece since it is in my livingroom. Today I applied a base coat of 1 part deep purple flat acrylic mixed with 2 parts water to create a thick stain or thin paint. Tomorrow I will use your method of paint and plaster of paris in a cream color like french vanilla. Then I'll do some distressing along the panel edges and other high-wear areas. I'm not positive yet on the sealing step but I'm leaning towards a liquid wax with a brown tint for some antiquing. Thanks for your excellent video. I am so ready for this!

Is Menards a regional home improvement store? I bought a huge box of chalk dust online! It's come in handy several times other than making chalk paint. For example, it makes an excellent rubbing compound! I had someone back into me last week. My red SUV had white streaks all over my door. I buffed all over them out but 2 small places that took the paint off. First I used WD40 and a sponge, the chalk dust paste and a buffer attachment on my girly cordless drill. It was amazing! Then once I accidentally poured scentsy melted wax on my leather shoe. I stuck it into that chalk dust the second I peeled the wax off. It absorbed almost all the oil out of my shoe! I still have most of the box after making 2 quarts of paint and doing the projects above. Best $15 I've spent. I'd say I can make at least 8 more quarts!

I use it, live by it, but you have to finely sand it with 400 + grit sanding which will look like diamonds when done. love watching your diy dork vids. I love this stuff. and this is a beautiful color for that awesome table! good job!
@MrDiyDork7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, sanding with a fine grit paper really helps smooth it out. On this table, I kind of liked the brush strokes and slight cloudy/milky look of the polycrylic, so I didn't sand it. But on my newest project (3D painted coffee table makeover video) I sanded the polycrylic with some wet 400 grit before applying the final coat. It came out nice and smooth!

You are an amazing teacher. I’m new to the whole furniture makeover. We just got some really nice pieces yesterday, so I’ve been watching videos all night. And yours was really informative on what kind of paint to use and what to do step by step process. Thank you. I will be following your tutorial to make over our home 🙏🏽❤️

Awesome. Glad you liked it! It's easy to make. Just make sure to mix it well (probably a little better than I did with the fork.)

Very good explanation, you are indeed a very good teacher, keep us posted please I have used metallic silver chalk paint to redo my dining table and chairs, it looks awesome and I use the wax that is for chalk paint and it is sealed well. I am still thinking of using gloss sealant as well

Thank you so much for sharing your 'formula'! I'm on a fixed income so this enables me to paint pieces for sale at an affordable price! 😊 NanaAnn
