Chalk is known as calcite which is calcium carbonate. It is a form of limestone but is not hard limestone as we know it. Limestone is a sedimentary rock made of calcite and aragonite, not purely calcite. That is why calcium carbonate works the closest to the manufactured chalk paint (which I agree with another comment that the Annie Sloan brand cannot and should not retain any trademark to the name chalk paint as chalk paint has been made for thousands of years, like milk paint). Plaster of Paris will work faster than calcium carbonate as it creates heat when it sets, like the grout. Plaster of Paris is actually gypsum plaster and the crystalization when mixed with water creates the heat.
@victoriabaker44003 жыл бұрын
Plaster of Paris is a heat-treated substance and it is actually very toxic. Best not to use it, when one of the major plusses of chalk paint is low toxicity.

Hi again. In the US you have a resource that I dearly wish was available here.(Australia) It is a company called Earth Pigments that specialises in traditional paint recipes & has the supplies & recipes for all of them. To me it's like a fantasy land of paint. You can get a kilo of calcium carbonate (chalk) for just under $5.00 US. Also recipes are for free. The company is based in Arizona. If you look in Finishes & Waxes you will find an Annie Sloan recipe for gesso, which is basically what chalk paint is. Was taught to make it in art school. They also have the recipe for traditional gesso made with rabbit glue. Drawn out process but I've heard it will stick to anything. Also Annie Sloan can't claim copyright on the name Chalk Paint. It has been around forever. Probably used in Egyptian tombs. P.S. No sanding? I've seen the results of that & given a bump it will come off a lacquered surface. Just sand it.

You can get calcium carbonate at pottery supply stores It is also known as Whiting. It is used in making pottery glazes. It is very cheap when purchased through this type of store. I checked the price on 2/12/2016 and one pound of calcium carbonate is $1.55 at a typical potter's supply store . Claymakers in Durham , NC . Clay-King in South Carolina. Shipping would be low since the powder is fairly light.

I use either baking soda or white chalk ground up and filtered through a seive. It comes out grainy but you then sand with 320-400 grit fine sand paper and it comes out beautifully. Its worth the convenience of using regular household substances.

ALL colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint can be mixed together in ANY way to get countless numbers of paint colors, so not everyone's colors will be exactly like the ASCP from the can. Also any latex paint, any color can be mixed to get new colors too. I've done many a 'custom mix' from latex paint leftovers and some DIY chalk paint colors too. I've even mixed exterior with interior latex paints and had good results.

You can make true chalk paint by using casein (milk paint powder) + slaked lime (which will break the casein and make it water proof) then mix in calcium carbonate until you have a texture that you like and apply powder pigment. You get real, natural chalk paint, that is healthy to use indoor, it has no VOCs, it dries quickly, creates a really tough surface and is water proof to a certain extend. Just use gloves for the slaked lime, as it can irritate your skin.

Might grind it but.... it will damage the grinder... better buy it off on ébay, Amazon, etc, still less expensive than chalk paint In store, if you are planning to make lots of différent Colors. What she didn't say is that calcium carbonate comes in different microns, the size of the particle/granule. Also some companies will tell you the mesh size they used; the higher mesh number the finer the microns will be. Mixing with a bit of water with the dry cc before adding the paint, as other's have said makes a big different also.

Latex and acrylic are the same stuff. For the difference between the two, "...milk paint, unlike Chalk Paint, comes in a powder form and must be mixed prior to use. And because it’s made with milk protein, unused milk paint may spoil after a few days, though the exclusive formula used in Real Milk Paint allows it to remain stable for up to two weeks." Calcium carbonate a.k.a. limestone, marble, whiting, chalk, french chalk, artist supply stores sell it also. It is the base for making "gesso" mixing calcium carbonate with rabbit skin glue as a base for egg tempera painting which was the medieval predecessor to fine art oil painting. Fine Artists such as American painter Andrew Wyeth made an effort to revive egg tempera painting. People have been using chalk paint or limestone paint forever, Annie Sloan, whomever she's supposed to be did not invent the stuff that's for sure. So it's quite unlikely that she has sole right over the term. The company can claim that it has a some special formula to justify the hobbyist prices, while targeting enthusiasts trying to break into the interior design market without cooperation from local trade groups or builders unions maybe. All that excess cost would go towards marketing, packaging, PR, and banking facilities though. Not really a crime, if you had a ready customer base willing to pay those kinds of prices, for what you can claim is boutique or personalized services. Nothing wrong with that is there? So what's with all the shadiness, and trying to pass yourself of as experts? In taste? You either know your stuff or you don't right? And people are going to appreciate your sensibilities, OR NOT. But surely no one is going to appreciate being misled. People have been using chalk paint forever, look it up!

Diana Bainbridge I have already tried it with boiling water and it's still gritty. I also add a dollop of matt Mod Podge into the mix for extra sticking power. It's NOT the fact that Annie Sloan has premixed colors that will make everyone's furniture look the "same" / Sh×t . It's preping the piece sufficiently enough , picking the correct color for the piece you're painting, choosing the right technique and perfoming it correctly, how and in what order you layer multiple colors, if those colors compliment each other, and the god awful overuse of chalk painting everything a variation of aquamarine blue ... It is one of my top 5 favorite colors and I am surprisingly burnt out from seeing it as probably 20% of ALL refinished things made of wood are brushed, sprayed, splashed, speckled, sponged, dabbed, stressed whateves in this hue.
