The herb garden this year has inspired me to do as much with my herbs as I possibly can. Moving towards learning and understanding what it means to be self sufficient, I recognize that a lot of money goes into my essential oils. This is why I have started to research how I can start making my own essential oils at HOME!
This particular process was initially the one that sounded like it suited my expectations of a final product the most. So this is the one that I tried. Of course, I seem to have made it a bit harder than it needed to be. Check out the video to learn more about my DIY Essential Oils experiment.

What you have right there is a jar full of Hydrosol which is amazing. The method you used is a great at home way to get hydrosol you will get very little oil because it takes pounds of plant material to get a bottle of essential oil. That’s why it is so expensive and you will need a still. You can do the infused oil method just know they are completely different and in no way is it an essential oil. Great video 👍🏻 fun to watch.

The liquid should have been room temperature before putting in the fridge. The hot liquid was too hot , heated the glass up and the cold temperature cracked the glass . It could crack plastic as well. That was a good trial . I will give your method a try . Thanks

Maybe if you put it in the refrigerator first for the separation, and then the freezer, that might help get the most oils out of your batch.

@@GrantedGardens I agree with Clever Unicorn, cooling the liquid down more slowly would have prevented the jar from breaking. Plus, if you put hot product in a cold jar it can crack it. The solution is to heat the jar before adding your hot product. One way to do this is by putting your jar in room temp water and then heating both the jar and the water at the same time. If you let it boil for 20 mins. or so it will sterilize your jar also. After adding your product, then let the jar sit at room temp, maybe then put in the fridge and from there put in the freezer. Extreme temp changes can break your jar.

The real issue is she did one small batch. You may have to do a 50 gallon drum worth of plant material to get 10-50ml of essential oil depending on the plant. Also it depends on the time of year. There’s some good academic books with research in it just about essential oils like 600 pages long or something. I skimmed it. It showed like pinyin juniper or pine essential oil extraction varies throughout the year because of nature and temperature etc. so you also might want to try to extract essential oil at different times to try to see what’s optimal.
@koltoncrane3099
@koltoncrane3099 19 күн бұрын
But I’ve never seen someone freeze water and essential oil to try to get the oil out. From what I’ve seen if you want to do it in a pot the best setup is a pressure cooker and then the top lid has a hole which you connect a hose to which then goes into your condenser. Just run the hose into a pot of cold water next to it, and then have it come out of the bottom into a glass jar. Just like cut a hole in a 5 gallon bucket for a hole to fit or put a pipe fitting so you can screw it on. That’d be a simple condenser and just put cold water in the bucket. Lots of setups use pumps to circulate water but that’s a lot more added work if you’re small.

I loved your video. I was wondering if it would be possible to leave the jar open so the water can evaporate. You would probably have to cover the container with a porous cloth, like cheesecloth, to prevent bugs from getting in, but allow water to get out. The oil shouldn't evaporate. Another I idea I had is the you could to simmer the water off without burning the oil. I have never commented before, but your video was inspiring! This is my first comment ever!

Oil freezes faster then water. U could have just put it in the fridge. The oil would harden and the water would stay melted. If you put oil and water in a cup put it in the freezer both would freeze. The only way you can separate it properly is putting it in the fridge not freezer

Technically, if I took the final process here and ran it through a few more time I would end up with a more pure essence. However, perfection was not my goal here. I was really just tinkering with what I had. There are MANY ways that people can make their own essential oils. I have see the way you mentioned done many times as well! Mason jars...the ones used for canning, can handle both heat and freezing. However, if the jar is cold, make sure the liquid is not hot and vice versa. I think if you had just put the jar of liquid in the refrigerator, if there were oil in it, they (oil and water) would separate just as well. However, oil does not generally turn into steam (water that has been turned into a vapor) or condensation (when vapor such as water forms a greater mass). I could be wrong but its what I remember from science classes years ago. It was a great effort though and helps me narrow down my own research and to be content with more of an infused oil process. I'm also thinking of using some alcohol (vodka or everclear) to break down the cell walls for 1st extraction and then using water / oil / glycerin (haven't finished my research yet) for the second extraction.
