How do you prevent botulism? I’ve read to make sure the leaves and flowers have no moisture and completely dry but I see people doing oil infusions with fresh herbs. I’m a bit confused.
@ravenlaughs97572 жыл бұрын
Olive oil goes rancid quite quickly usually 6 months unless you keep it cold and dark, usually the oil and rubs/salves use grapeseed, avocado or fractionated coconut oil vs olive oil. You can use just about any oil but how long will it last before going rancid depends on the oil used.

Ok, 2weeks is not enough time to extract everything out of the herb(s) being used. It takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks for maximum extraction of the herb(s) used. And you "ALWAYS" press the herb(s) you used, to get the remaining amount of oil out . Even if you have to use a fine mesh screen afterwards then do so. And even if you have some particulars of the herb(s) you used left in the oil , that's fine, It doesn't matter if there is still bits of herb(s) left in the oil.

After the birth of my daughter I did a sitz bath of calendula, comfrey, and lavender to make tea bags for the tub. It was HEAVENLY compared to the Epsom salt I used with my oldest 3. Vitamin E or Rosemary Oleoresin Extract will help extend the shelf life of the oils (fats).

I think putting your herb oil mixture in a sealed container, in a dehydrator, is better than the oven method. The temp is well controlled and the timer will take the need for constantly checking away. Even if you forget about it until the next day, you will still have a good product. Thank you Mary for all your wonderful and informative videos. 🙂

You can buy the nylon mesh coffee filters at any big box store, I like the V shaped ones as it aids in getting the liquid out. Plop the stuff into one of those, it's a very fine mesh, does NOT absorb any of the goodies, and you can then take a spoon and press the herbs to the side of it to wring out any remaining oils to recover them. Goto a dollar store / salvation army etc, and get an old coffee maker for a few bucks, it comes with the strainer AND a basket to hold it in to make it even easier and cheaper for you.

They play continuously till the last one finishes and soothing voice is better than my sleep app. Of course i watch the videos later when I’m awake bc they’re so informative. I’ve often wished she had a podcast, even a video podcast, so I could then use my sleep timer option and podcasts play even with the screen is off.

You give the best tutorials because you are a stickler for details. I like your idea to put something in between the oil and cover to absorb moisture. I worked with spring dandelions today for 5 hours to preserve them for 3 different purposes and am thinking I should have dried them first before adding oil to them. Another helpful tip you gave was how to test the consistency by putting a little on a plate then in the freezer for a minute. Also, for handmade salves without preservatives, it might be a good idea to wipe the container and lid with alcohol first and use a spatula when taking some out to avoid introducing bacteria into it. I've never made oils or salves before and don't want bacteria or mold.

Great video! Love the herbal series. The only thing I do differently when I make infused oils, is I never steep them in the sun as I feel it can draw strength from the herbs. I keep calendula/comfrey salve on hand at all times--such good salve. Looking forward to more in the herbal series. God bless!
@solanisomeni Жыл бұрын
I know that it's been a few years since this tutorial was uploaded and everything Mary says/does is very good/correct. I would however like to add yet another method. You can also use your crock-pot/slow-cooker. Similar to the double boiler method. Lowest heat and similar time or "smell test".

I practice traditional herbal medicine and green witchcraft, mostly using herbs I grow. Infusions of blends that include nettles have made a huge difference for me for my and my partner’s chronic nerve pain and migraines. I primarily use nettle leaves for this but do add some nettle root. The nettle root is astonishingly bitter so if anyone plans to try this for a migraine remedy, be careful with them! I always infuse the nettle root separately and for less time than the other herbs. Needless to say, I’m so, so glad you made this video! Salves and oils have never been my forte like tonics and infusions are and your tips are a major help! It’ll certainly be nice to apply the nettle root more as a salve, so we can get it more potent than we can with an infusion without it being inedibly bitter.

Thank you for sharing with us you seem so cheery and I like the fact that anyone can do this as you are doing it in your kitchen. I think people should learn this it's an old Homestead thing a regular thing that people did way back long ago and we should not be so spoiled to rely on farmers to rely on pharmacies and health food stores for all of this that we can certainly do at home and teach our children and our friends and save money and know what's in the product

Great idea on the moisture preventative.....but; you neglected to mention in the begining to have the herbs/all utensils & bowels completely clean and DRY BEFORE even starting to prevent spoilage. I use my dehydrator or oven. Just dry as possible on very low. Another caviot is that REAL olive oil will stain clothes. So as a salve or Balm be aware or use coconut/grapeseed/avacado/etc oils or a combo thereof. Then... since herbs are non acidic; if planning on using them for salads/cooking, it would be wise to store them in the fridge in small batches to avoid botulism. Just like canning prevention.

I use my slow cooker for two to three days on low. I suggest adding vitamin E, as it is a natural preservative and use a cloth or parchment as a cover to prevent condensation (moisture).

Thank you for your videos. I was first taught to make my infused oils using a crock pot on low with the herbs and oil in a canning jar.

Great video, I learned a lot! I had a thought that if I take the trays out of my Excalibur dehydrator, I could use that instead of the double boiler or oven method since you can control the temperature better.

Thank you for this video. I have a few questions. Can I leave a few herbs or flowers in the oil to make them look pretty? If so, should I use one that was not soaking? Should it be dry or fresh? Does this shorten the shelf-life? Are these methods the same if you want to make a fragrance oil? Or are they require more time to steep? Have you tried to alcohol method where you soak the hers for in vodka for a bit first?

A trick I do as far as condensation goes is I let my oil sit in the collection container open in a warm area for anywhere from overnight to a couple of days to allow any water to evaporate out. I will typically leave the mesh strainer on top to keep anything that might be able to get in the oil from the air out like dust, any kind of hair, etc. Yes it does add an extra step and more time but I have had better results with this than just covering it with something.

Hi, Mary ~ I'm a fairly new subscriber gradually making my way thru your older videos, so please pardon my question on this one. You mentioned that the herbs (or flowers) keep the olive oil from going rancid, so is there anything wrong with just leaving the herbs in the oil indefinitely, using out of it as needed?

I’ve been looking all over for help with this. I only use dried herbs but for some reason I’ve been getting condensation at the top of my glass jars while my oil infusions are being stored. I’m guessing maybe from the temperature inside my home fluctuating. Thanks for sharing! I’m going to try adding a coffee filter to the top of them now.

Wonderful!! Keep me posted if it helps and be sure to change the filter if it gets damp. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

Hi Mary! How about painting the jars if we don't have the dark colour jars?
