Don't forget to sand the top edge of your can and the part of the cover where you are putting the tin foil. That way you get full contact around the edge.

Yep - paint is a insulator and needs to be removed - actually useless in not removed

Thanks for the video! Id suggest putting your electronics into sealable freezer bags first though, especially if you're going to line the inside with hygroscopic cardboard. You'd be amazed how much moisture cardboard can soak up from humidity in the air, especially in a damp basement. Slight temperature changes result in condensation and even if your device is waterproof, keep it in mind that humid air and damp cardboard are both electrically conductive!

Hi I know this is a year later, thanks for that comment, that's a good idea. I was wondering....they sell that flex seal spray. I am thinking that might be a better "insert' or insulator from the metal than the cardboard? For me, I don't live in a real humid environment so I don't know that I'd have to worry too much about moisture.

A sock with rice or moisture packet can be very useful to help control moisture.
@haifutter41663 жыл бұрын
@@Genesis.1-1 The rice is a very bad idea, since its dust becomes sticky and will ruin electronics it gets into. But the silica-gel bags work perfect, and since the covid rapid-tests have them in every bag, now nearly everyone should have more then enough of these useful silica-gel bags.

I picked up some conductive gasket material and tape for a few of my large ammo cams. I also remove the paint on the lid under the gasket and the edge of the can for maximum affect. I keep a couple of ham HT’S and a ICOM 50watt mobile ham radio, antennas, batteries, a couple of lifepo4 12ah batteries and a folding 60Watt solar panel and more in them.

Ha! Ha! Those ammo cans! We had a Travel Bug Hotel at the Chamber of Commerce here in Billings and the Travel Bugs kept getting ripped off by someone. We locked it, tied it down, hid the key but we didn't know the top could come off. We finally figured out that the person was taking the top off. Too late!! All the Bugs were stolen! We had to shut it down. Learned a good lesson about ammo cans from that! They aren't cheap either. They used to be pretty reasonable before people decided to really use them for what they were made for! :)

You should sandblast the paint off the lid and sand the top of the can to make sure it actually grounds. Good video though!

The cage(bird cage keeps cats out) does not need to be solid metal. Expanded metal works. You just need to interrupt the wavelength. I worked on a funded Faraday office. The windows were amazing. Power and comms were filtered. Go from there.

Same here, if you get a large plastic ziplock bag & a cheap metal Ammo can it’ll work. You have the plastic as the insulator & the ammo can/all metal box. Got 3 of e Walmart ones & 2 military ones we got a while back, I wanted some more ammo cans & looked at the military ones, but I was paying more per can than I could on eBay for the military ones. I sometimes forget that the Walmart ones are so cheap & if I wanted another one I could get 2 for the price of 1 military can.

I wonder if wrapping the gasket would work... I once saw what I thought was a tough pickup camper. Turned out to be a milsurp portable Faraday cage. Radios needing field work, were worked on inside it. Wish I'd bought it...
@KarlsLabReport6 жыл бұрын
Pygar2 I thought of wrapping the gasket with a layer of foil, too. In either case, one needs to sand the paint off both the lid where the gasket is as well as the top edge of the box where the gasket seats. This will establish a complete conductive electrical seal.

I’m thinking of getting into HAM radios. Which one would you consider best for a starter handheld? Baofeng or Yaesu radio?
@Iridium2426 жыл бұрын
I have 3 Yeasus, love them, they are better radios BUT the Baofeng is amazingly cheap for what it is, I have one of those as well, and its worked great all the times i have used it. The nice part about the Baofengs if it breaks you can buy another failry cheap. I do love my Yeasu gear however, I have a VX 5 VX6 and a VX7, they are great rigs. For starters you cant beat a Baofeng
@KarlsLabReport6 жыл бұрын
BoB’s Woodland Adventures Baofeng is great if you have a limited budget. They work, and one advantage is they're cheap enough that if you destroy one while out camping or knocking about, it's cheap enough you can simply go buy another one. I have both a Baofeng as well as a Yaesu FT-270. The Yaesu is a very nice radio priced at around $160 as of a couple years ago when I bought mine; it is also built like the proverbial brick outhouse and supposedly can sit immersed in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. Do NOT try this with a Baofeng : )
