Geodesic domes were once all the rage in architecture. Rob shows how to make a model of one and then scale it up to something you can get into - all done with cardboard.

Richard Buckminster Fuller (July 12, 1895 - July 1, 1983) was an American architect, systems theorist, writer, designer, inventor, philosopher, and futurist....Fuller developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, and popularized the widely known geodesic dome. ; carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their structural and mathematical resemblance to geodesic spheres. -Wikipedia

And it is. It’s simplicity belies it’s power. The concept also helped navigation across the seas.

@@dave.p153 Sextant. They’re very cool too. Between the two tools they’re massively responsible for world navigation. And the other sort of compass, too.

I was so hoping you were going to show a full-size dome that you could actually step into. That would be fun even as an adult.

🎵Whether igloo, hut or lean-to, or a geodesic dome, there’s no structure I have been to which I’d rather call my home…🎵

This is gonna be a hit with the kids! Wish someone taught me this as a kid, would have been so much better than the cardboard tipi we had (:Clever little greenscreen timesaver at the end there! ;)

Cardboard flat earthers (cflerfers) believe that the cardboard flat earth is covered by a cardboard geodesic dome. True story. 🙂

that end scene was a green-screen cheat. Rob didn't make the full size tents! We had a geodesic dome in the 70's that was about 10 meters wide and could easily fit about 50 people.

If we wanted to add more and more belts to get a fuller dome shape, how many triangles would we need on the second and third belts? I'm curious to know if it's an arithmetic or geometric progression and what the rules are for it.
