About a decade ago I replicated your Swiss Knife with keys that you made for Tom. I loved that thing dearly but sadly let it go when I sold my ‘89 Honda Civic and the only key I had for it was in that knife. These films are fantastic Van. I searched for your work constantly over the last decade after stumbling upon your films with TS and I’m glad you’ve made home on this platform and are continuing to share your art and passion.

I remember watching Casey engrave everything in his earlier videos. I engraved some of my own items because of him. I'll probably engrave more because of this.
@canadude6401
@canadude6401 2 жыл бұрын
I started engraving things too. At first, I couldn't figure out why a date was necessary to engrave, now I get it! Many years ago, I noticed most gas stations took away the metal clip that allowed people pumping gas to lock the trigger in place, so they didn't have to hold the pump. (there is a super rare occurrence that static electricity can cause a fire). From Casey's, Van's and Tom Sachs inspiration, I built a custom wood wedge to hold the trigger down on the pump, so I can go back in the car on cold days. Since gasoline is a carcinogen, I was not keen on inhaling it for 3 minutes while I pump gas every week. It works perfectly, and bends the rules a bit, but I don't care. Because I engraved the date on it, I know I have been using it since Dec 2017, so I have used it over 200 times!! I highly recommend creating custom things for your use and engraving it too.

My mom had a tradition that every boy in my family got a Swiss army knife for their 10th birthday. She would keep them sharp and everything to signify that we have to be more responsible. I still have it to this day kept safe, but I have since moved up to Gerber and Leatherman 🤷‍♂️ every kid should have one!

I tried this! Great instructions. I inscribed “measure twice” on mine. One improvement to this process: use a soldering iron with a small knob for the temperature. You can see how hot the wood burner is and any little shake is visible. With a cooler soldering iron you can get smoother results. I set mine to 250F and got a look I liked. And the plastic doesn’t stick on the soldering iron like solder does. Also I didn’t have an old knife to try on so I used an old 30 pin iPod cord connector which is a similar plastic. Hope that helps.

I do something similar when I engrave my items, but some things I do different. I use one of those noisy vibrating engravers and then file the edges of the letters using a knife to make it nice and smooth. Then the hard part: the painting. I take my oil based paint pen, get the nib very saturated with paint, and write all over the engraved letters. As fast as I filled the letters I take a paper towel and wipe the excess off. It’s not always the cleanest way, but it’s quick if you are working on a lot of items or engrave very narrow letters that you can’t fill with a fine tipped pen.

A great tip for removing paint pen paint from plastics where Bestine or other solvents can’t or would damage the plastic is to use Brasso and buff it off. The fine abrasive in the metal polish works as a wet sand and actually takes away some material without affecting the sheen of the plastic too much.

I do stuff similar to this all the time with 3d prints but the craziest thing I have ever done was with copper wire in bamboo flooring. My friend had an ecig shop back when those were blowing up on every corner. I slowly chiseled the shop name in the edge of this piece of 3/4" bamboo flooring I found. I used a 1/8" chisel to slowly engrave the name into the side of the flooring. I then took copper wire (general in home outlet 12 or 10 gauge solid core stuff) stripped the pvc sleeve off a long piece and hammered it into a wedge shape and then hammered it into the chiseled out wood. Once I had it all inlayed I sanded it down to only protrude a small amount. It took probably 20 hours. I then drilled 1/4" holes into the top of the wood and then glued that to another piece of bamboo thats the same length and width. It was used as a taste tester thing that they could put the little tank cartridge things in so people could try different flavors. It looked great then like 2 months later the law changed and taste test things were banned.... I dont know what ever happened to that stand.
