The one thing I absolutely loved about the curiosity show was you didn't treat your audience's if they were stupid like most shows today . The line about the safety "as you well know" sums it up I think.

It's been over 20 years, and I still love this show. Always made time to watch this. Still remember some of the experiments today. Try it on your friends. Awesome.

As a younger fella in the 90's, we did something similar using plastic garden bags, some light wire in a ring to hold the opening open and a bar made with the same wire across the ring. In the middle of the bar we put a jiffy fire block. I have no idea where they ended up, but they just kept rising

Nice one Deane. Back in uni my friends and I did something similar using those small tea candles and a bit of string. Takes a bit longer to get going but they fly for a good while.

I remember trying this as a kid after seeing it on tv. Unfortunately, the hair dryer overheated and broke. I had some trouble with my mother then 😄

...around the same time on TV (well at least when it was aired here in Switzerland (well: Germany but we received the channels from "over the border"): the A-Team-episode where Murdock and Hannibal escaped a prison using garden-chairs strapped to Deane's variant of hotair-balloons powered with hair-dryers :)

Just after this episode aired back in the day There was a couple of Australian air force jets scramble over to Lucus Hights Reator (no fly zone) some kids had put aluminium foil over one of the bags and had some form of heat source , candels maybe, the kids had sent it off from nearby as to attract attention.

Can you think.. Free flying? Weave a basket (or get a bucket) Paracord/rope Tarp/ballon/bags Big torch or way to produce heat.. Mirrors? .. Body heat 😋 up there etc.

I tried this when I was a young child playing without adult supervision and burned myself when I tried to heat the air with a propane torch.

I remember putting a plastic bag over my head as a kid! Unfortunately I was killed instantly. 😢

This should not be done outside because any breeze can take it away and you won’t know where it’s landed, becoming a potential hazard. Remember solar balloons - just a long, black, plastic tube / bag and the sun heated up the air inside.
