Here's a video tutorial on how to make a polypipe Duduk (designed by Linsey Pollak). The body of the instrument is from 12mm ID (16mm OD) polypipe and the reed is made from 13mm ID (14.5mm OD) garden irrigation polypipe. The reed is like a cane duduk reed but in polypipe. The idea came from Xavier Lozano Palay:
• The hidden secrets of ...
thanks Xavi! This video takes you through the process of making the instrument and the reed and demonstrates the sound (which is halfway between the sound of a duduk and a clarinet).

Many thanks for the detailed plans - that'll be very helpful. I actually have a traditional duduk, but I can't get replacement reeds without paying about as much as a whole new instrument. I've just checked the measurements, and I should be able to adapt this polypipe reed to fit (inside) my duduk. Problem solved!

Here's a little tip to save you some irritation: attach that anvil to a piece of plywood with some bolts (countersunk type, pointing upward so the underside is smooth). To the underside of the plywood, attach a piece of ordinary 2x lumber so it makes a "T" in cross section. When you want to use the anvil, tighten the lower 2x piece in the vise so it doesn't squirm around the bench.

I then tried to make reeds for duduks I have from georgia and armenia, but didnt quite get them good enough, though they where playable.. ma by with more hammering experiments I could get them better.. have also tried to make the original reed version, a georgian builder once showed me the whole process.. fascinating! but they are v e r y tricky to get them working well..

thanks, I will try again ... already the past years I had purchased some black tube (curved though) and I tried to do it, with little success ... now I could try again, just in these days I tried to make the mouth thinner, and a trumpet-like sound comes out ... but not as beautiful and melodious as yours ... but I guess it is very much a question of ability to play instruments ... however I am going to buy one from Armenia with ebay. ..

This is incredible, and it sounds beautiful! I'm wanting to make one of my own, but it's pretty difficult to find poly pipe in these dimensions here in the States, thanks to us still rejecting the metric system *facepalm* How would you recommend going about experimenting with hole placement and dimensions to find the right spots? The closest thing I can get my hands on to 12mm ID pipe will be 1/2 inch which is just a little too big, do you think I could work with that and these hole placements and still get somewhere close to decent intonation?
@mechwarrior5727
@mechwarrior5727 3 жыл бұрын
if youre still wondering, start with smaller holes, try about 4 mm or whatever is less than 7 but not absurdly small, then once the instrument is finished, try the low note and make sure its in tune, then then first hole, make that in tune, then the next and so on, getting each hole in tune before starting the next, to pick where to make a hole, try and scale it up with the tube

I read up on this a bit and the radius/diameter _do_ actually affect the pitch somewhat in real life: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_correction Since the frequency is determined from the effective length basically. For a closed pipe: DeltaL == 0.6 * r = 0.3 * D where DeltaL is the extra length added on from the physical length of the pipe. So in short for a wider tube you need to slightly shorten the distances by some calculable amount I suppose, and vice versa for a narrower one.

Very Nice! Living in the US the “normal” pipe we get here is .5 ID and .7 OD. Would you have a method to convert the measurements? They are pretty close. Thanks
@SquealyD
@SquealyD 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have a method for conversion, but if the dimensions of the pipe are close then use my measurements and then adjust them on the 2nd attempt. ie: if the note is too sharp move the hole further down the tube, if it's too flat move it further up the tube
@jjohnston94
@jjohnston94 4 жыл бұрын
The reed pipe is ordinary 1/2" drip irrigation pipe; I don't know what the body pipe is. It looks like a double layer, with a translucent pipe inside the black one. We've got PEX in the US, so maybe that's all it is.
