Thanks for the video, I bought a couple of cheap component cables hoping to get one that works properly (none did without massive interference), didn't even think of converting my old 360 cable, lol. What I also did was cut the grey flexible piece off the 360 cable which will then allow you to slide the black Xbox cover over, then solder the wires, etc. Reassemble the metal shielding & slide the cover back over it. Makes it look very neat & gives it that little extra protection.

yeah those cheap cables suck! but yeah i meant to reuse the black cover piece but i spaced it while filming and didnt want to un-solder and re-solder so it got the hot glue treatment lol... glad it all worked out for you thanks for your support!

Excellent. Component kits (good ones) for the original box are rare as hens teeth, while 360 component cables are like toss-out items anywhere you find them. I probably have the parts to blend almost half a dozen of these. Thankyou for this.

one real small small gripe is putting RGB in the title. Most component inputs on TVs are not RGB but rather YpBpr. Instead of being for color, the inputs are for Luma, difference between blue and Luma and difference between red and luma. Basically there is no green input as green is made from the red and blue. As I said, it's a small small gripe that does not detract from the amazing video, I just like having facts more clearly defined

Thanks so much for the tutorial! I just finished making a component cable out of an old Xbox composite cable and two RCA cables. Levered the housing off the shielding with a flathead and swung the shielding open. Folded a bit of the shielding at the back so it opened up on one side. Drilled a hole through rubber and threaded the new wires in through the hole. Switched the VGA connection to Pr and used the new wires for Pb and Y. Switched the ground and added the new one and worked first try! Really wish I could have found my magnifying glass. Marked everything with coloured electrical tape.

@scarael6552 6 жыл бұрын
The Front of the SP-DIF(Toslink) Connector facing towards you! I Soldered Pin 3 (XBOX Connector) to the right Pin/Pin 1 of The Toslink Connector. You also need to Connect Pin 13 VCC which is +5V (XBOX Connector) to the Left Pin/Pin 3 of the Toslink Connector and Pin 23(XBOX Connector) to the Middle Pin of the Toslink. The 2 bigger Pins from the Metal Casing of the Toslink Connector are supposed to be Soldered to a PCB/Mainboard, but for now, i just bend them down. If done right, the Toslink Connector should light up Red, while the Console is Running.

Aght, for real bro there is absolutely no way in hell I'm going to do all of this, not when you can get an official Xbox HDMI kit for like 25 bucks. However this is some impressive stuff, so I'm still going to give you a thumbs up cuz well I'm not willing to go through all the problem of doing this entire mess I'm pretty sure someone else is and this video is really good at explaining what you got to do step by step.
@TechnoOnTop

Yeah, iv never had one of those adapters so I can't really speak on their quality but from what I have read they do have artifacts, but only really picky people would care. But thank you I tried to make it as straightforward and easy to follow as possible though I have had a few people tell me it's not easy at all to follow so idk different ways of thinking. My only regret is not adding back in the rubber connector piece... it was always my intention, but this video shows literally the very first time this mod was ever done (to my knowledge anyways, it was talked about on forums) and my soldering skills back then where sub par at best. I did eventually go back and add in the piece years later so the hot glue held up well anyways I appreciate you checking out the video and giving it a thumbs up!

As it happens, I ended up with 2 Xbox 360 cables in a bunch of stuff I got from a friend. 1 was the HD cable like you use here and the other was just a regular RCA L-R audio and video cable. I have another regular Xbox cable that I am going to attempt this with if I can find it. I knew someone would know how to modify the 360 cable! Thanks for this. I'll edit this after I find my cable and do the mod. Also I am going to try to save the cover and try to put it back together, although it shouldn't matter since it's going to be behind the Xbox and no one will see it! LOL I always watch the videos at least once, if not twice before I attempt any mod! It's just the right thing to do! LOL EDIT: So I did this mod and it worked like a charm! Can definitely see the difference! I don't like the fact that all the ground wires are a bit bigger than the others. I haven't closed my connector up as of yet, because I think I am going to use some slightly smaller wires and re-do the ground wires. I have original Xbox connector cover on the wire, so when I get finished I will be able to put the shielding on and then the cover so it will look more original. Thanks again for this video. Liked.

I appreciate you watching. Yeah I always meant to re-use the connector piece but after I started to solder I realized I forgot to put it on so I just said oh well and covered it in hot glue. But it definitely looks nicer with the original connector in place. Glad to hear you got it all up and running. To make the grounds smaller you can just un-braid them and cut them till you get your desired size that's what iv done. Thanks for watching

I would highly recommend de-soldering the wires from the 360 connector which will leave them ready to be soldered to the other connector Original XBOX. A few years later and the Originals just get more expensive. This is a $6 (+time) investment from my local goodwill. It feels like they have both of these cables all the time. Also, many of the aftermarket cables do not have all the pins in them so you are much better of getting the genuine Microsoft parts. Thanks for posting this!
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you could desolder them, haven't did this in awhile, but I do know that things could of been done better, such as leaving the connector housing in place, which was the intention originally but when your making a video it got forgotten then I just said screw it! I used to find the cables at goodwill, I remember there being stacks of brand new Xbox 360 cables, but nowadays I rarely find any cables for any system makes me wish I would of bought them then. But that was well before I even considered this mod. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thank you for checking out the video!

Thanks man, yeah I understand, truth is I was filming and soldered it all back then didn't want to re-do it. Pretty sure I mentioned that that cover could be re-used. Just a mess up. On another note that cable is still holding up fine despite it being ugly as f**k..

@8bitwiz_
@8bitwiz_ 3 жыл бұрын
There's one place where hot glue is the right thing to use, and that's where wires are soldered down to a connector. It keeps the wire from bending and breaking at the solder point. That being said, it was still pretty well done for a big blob of glue. And yeah, I was wondering how he was going to put that stuff back on after he had already soldered the wires down. So if you want to try, either put it on before you solder anything, or cut down one long side and wrap it on. (The new wire is probably too big to push through the strain relief anyhow.) But I just checked and I already have an Advanced AV and an HD AV, so I don't need to do any of this unless I want VGA, and that would be a bit harder. Still good to know that the connector has all pins and can be easily reused.

Luckily for me i had the official 360 cables lying around. I didnt need them anymore since i recently got an elgato because before i only had a component video recorder and now i have both for that and HDMI. I thought i would have no more use for those cables but then i discovered this video. It had a couple setbacks (I mixed up the positive and ground pins for the red video cable at first so i was scared i broke it when i tried it out) but it once i got it right it worked like a charm and im very happy with the results in quality! I even managed to preserve the metal shielding and the plastic/rubber part of the original XBOX connector and put it on the new cable so it looks SUPER clean. ...Now onto finding a good S-Video cable for my N64 xD

@TechnoOnTop thanks for the tutorial! I’ve made a few of these cables (I screenshot your modified graphic, because it’s the most straightforward diagram I’ve found online ), and I’ll be making a few more, once I figure out how to get the mode select switch (so I can still switch between SD and HD if I want [I definitely won’t, but it hurts my brain not to use the composite video connector]), and TosLink audio working. But the first couple I wired with just the connections you used because they had a broken RCA jack on one side (one is actually wired in reverse and custom labeled because the Red RCA jack had the center pole snapped off). Definitely a better solution than a Pound HDMI cable, and cheaper too (Xbox composite cables and Xbox 360 Component cables are plentiful and cheap at my local thrift store). One tip I’d add to your tutorial is to double check all connections with a multimeter to ensure that a) the solder joint is good, and b) that you don’t have any pins accidentally bridged together, BEFORE you connect the DIY cable to the Xbox, especially since there are pins on the video connector that supply 5V and 12V. Also note that the graphic has pins numbered as if you’re facing the side of the connector that plugs into the Xbox, but you can orient yourself properly if you count from the audio connection pins on the back.
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah adding a switch would be a cool thing, but wouldn't you need to add 3 more connectors for the composite? Another solution is just to add to the console rather then the cable, also iv seen a guy on the of Xbox forums actually use the 360 side of the connector housing to add the digital audio which looked pretty good. Yeah this tutorial is pretty old and I made it when I was still learning definitely a good idea to test the connections with a multi meter and visually the soldering is somewhat delicate, it was actually the first time I had ever built one. Iv only built 2 to date and I fixed the connector housing and the one in the video only took me a few years to be bothered by it haha. Glad you like my modified pinout guide, it was and still is pretty straightforward to me but I know others have had issues with it, iv actually condensed it down to a simple cheat sheet for any future ones I make, I wish I could find both cables at the thift shops iv only managed to find one recently and that good will wanted $10 for it I just laughed and left.

TechnoOnTop I’ve actually built three Xbox cables now, and used another Xbox 360 cable and the connector from a cheap Chinese PlayStation 2 component cable to build a high quality component output for the PlayStation 2 as well (no wavy picture and audio buzz, oh yeah!). I have to say, that compared to the construction of the Xbox component cable, the soldering for the PlayStation 2 component was really technically challenging, and would have been much come difficult without my helping hands, soldering tweezers, and a hemostat. The cable works beautifully with the $10 PlayStation 2 Fat I picked up on a recent trip to the thrift store (needs a new DVD drive and bezel, but I’m just going to forego that and softmod the console so it can play games off of a 2TB internal hard drive connected to a SATA modded Sony network adapter [I have several I picked up for $2/each when a local pawn shop closed down] as a Christmas present for a friend [he’s getting an LCD HDTV and a modded 2TB Xbox as well, because who says handmade Christmas has to be a badly knitted sweater or crocheted booties]). My Goodwill actually had two 360 cables with two different prices on them and I pointed it out to the cashier and she gave me the $3 price each for both instead of the $7 one was labeled. And I got an Xbox 360 VGA cable there today for $3 as well. Prices at the shops are definitely dependent on who’s pricing them in the back, so it pays to get chummy with the staff (especially the ones shelving items and the cashiers).

I had people request a tutorial on making a Ps2 component cable, but the cheap component cables I bought works just fine no distortion whatsoever, so I just let that idea go, the only way it's gets distortion is on a slim using a knockoff power supply, no problems if using an official one though, nice find, I picked up a phat Ps2 recently with 54 games, from some young kid no doubt it was probably left behind by his older brother because he only wanted 60 bucks for it. Yeah I always try and be friendly with them not all of them can be sweet talked into better deals but it definitely can and does pay off every now and again. That's awesome man I bet your friend will be psyched to get some bad ass modded consoles. My first modded Xbox was a gift from a friend as well and it's one of the reasons I started to get into modding in the first place. Maybe you will have the same effect on him.

I am so pissed, I apparently did this backwards because instead of making the wiring diagram as if the soldering points were facing me, this diagram is as if I was looking at the cord from the side that plugs into the console. Really stupid. I had to think as if I was looking at a mirror. Once I rewired it a second time, everything worked perfectly. Also flux is important and also cleaning the contacts afterwards.

This is nice if you happen to find the cables for less money than a component box, but if you find one, even if it's not the official one, it will work just as well. I bought mine a year after launch, its not official, and i needed it for its TOSlink output (i didnt have HDTV back then). A week ago i repaired my XBOX and used the component outut from the box, with pretty cheap RCA to RCA cables, and it's crystal clear, no interferences and outputs 1080i perfectly.

Great video. I made 2 cables they work well but i am getting a very light jailbar effect with both. All of my solder joints are good. Any suggestions? Could it be the tv or the xbox itself?
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 7 жыл бұрын
interference could be coming from anywhere. but to help rule out the TV i would just connect something else component up. then if you could test your cables on other TV's that would help figure out if its either the xbox or the cable. iv never had any problems with my cables on any of my TV's or xbox's. maybe you have a buddy with an xbox have him test your cables? its odd that your getting the same problem with both cables to me that would rule out the cables being the problem.maybe try moving the xbox to a different spot (if you set it up in one spot). make sure your connectors of clean. thats really all i have for suggestions. as crazy as it sounds you could try removing the faraday cage from the xbox it may help

I had a go at this a few months back, successful! ... for like a minute then it cut off... didn't bother to fix it. : -( Had the official Xbox HD Pack... signal was too soft and even putting sharpness up couldn't fix it... Bought the official Component Cables for the XBOX, £40+ was good but sadly the Red Video connector was faulty, looking to get some solder and fix it. Just today I got my cheapie £3.99 cable from Ebay UK, works perfectly! No lines/Dot crawl/Squiggles/Blobs of colour etc. I am amazed, they are nickle plated, great quality build and I noticed the seller had zero complaints on these cables. The picture is ever so slightly sharper then the official ones, really chuffed I got a great, fully working set and not a duff : -D HD for the OG Xbox is really nice and notable upgrade over 480i, which is lousy! Cheers for the videos, your stuff is great! BTW: I used be convinced my Xbox was broken as it couldn't do the HD, never understood why MS made 480p exclusive to USA... PAL sucks for gamers, lol!

those guides use the official xbox component cable box, they just internalize it , but yes it would be possible to use RCA jacks it would just take wiring from the motherboard to them. its alot more work then these cables. that and i could never find RCA jacks that had the right colors (cheaply)so you would have to figure a way of labeling them. but its possible yes, thought i dont know if i would ever make a tutorial about it though but i can add it to a list of what people want . thanks for watching!

When you say no red color your saying "that the red video connector isn't working?" seems to be a weird problem. My first advise would be to check continuity but you said you did that. Then of course just double check your soldering to the right spot... Um my only other thought is are you soldering/plugging in the right 'red' cable since there is one for both audio and for video. That's all I got unless iv misunderstood your question. Sorry I can't be of more help I hope that you are able to get it working.

Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. The reason they are so expensive is because the component cables hooked up to a digital output. Component is an analog signal, therefore Nintendo manufactured a chip that converted that digital signal into analog for the component cable, and so far no one has been able to duplicate it. You can’t get component out of the normal video out, so the best you can do without spending $200+ is S Video.

What I found underneath the outer insulation is: a thick layer of ground braid, covering a thin foil, covering braided wires. I feel like its impossible to prevent that now since the foil broke off pretty fast. If anyone can answer this, please reply ASAP.

the wire wrapping around each wire is the ground. twist it up and solder it to the appropriate ground points, dont worry you didn't mess anything up all those grounds touch each other honestly you may be able to just ground one point (never tried) and be ok that's how the cheap component cables are hooked up, thanks for watching!

@@TechnoOnTop First of all, thank you very much for the answer. There are no other cables running by or whatsoever. However, I desoldered everything (Pb, Pr, Audio) and soldered only the Y-Cable on. I wanted to detect, where the artifacts are generated. Unfortunately the lonely Y-Cable itself produces those artifacts. The green cable alone produces the artifacts, which rules out interference with other cables as the cause. That makes it even more difficult to find a solution. Maybe the whole "China-Plug" is the problem. Any other ideas?

Question: Wouldn't it be a better idea to also run a wire from pin 8 (Ground) to the original metal shielding and re-install said shielding? It just seems like you're asking for RF interference by skipping that step. (Also, further shortening the 360 cable so that the minimum amount of wires are exposed without RF shielding) Not trying criticize or anything, just curious since I'm planning on attempting this soon.

@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 5 жыл бұрын
? You need a composite cable, which you likely already have you could also use an aftermarket one but they are cheaply made the pins pull out easy. Then an official Xbox 360 component cable. Which at the time I made this video were everywhere for way cheap. I remember walking into goodwills and just seeing stacks of them. (which i wish I would of bought then all.. Anyways thanks for watching

Would it be possible to make your own rca n64 cable?
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 7 жыл бұрын
i dont see why not, there are pinouts not exactly sure how you would accomplish the connector so they would either have to be hardwired on or you could add female ports then just any old male to male RCA cables
@erick3003lel
@erick3003lel 6 жыл бұрын
Technically yeah, but the n64 only outputs composite, s-video and i think RF too, for the component/rgb output you need to get them directly from the video chip (basically mod your console)
@8bitwiz_
@8bitwiz_ 3 жыл бұрын
The N64 doesn't have component out. It has RGB, but whether it's usable for RGB depends on the specific board. Also, the cables often only have the necessary pins, so you wouldn't have one with the right pins anyhow. This mod works because the Xbox was designed to output different types of video signals selected by option wires in the cable plug, and because the connectors have all pins and are easily salvaged.

Can I use Chinese component cable instead of the official composite cable ?
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop Жыл бұрын
Your going to run into the distortion problem still, or I would assume you would. You could use some other decent quality component cables and say the connector from a cheap xbox cable.

Well the cheapie cables I got gave out. Started off with a green hue over everything then the sharpness of the image went fuzzy... complete shit! Happily I've fixed the official ones I bought (faulty red video signal) and the quality of the picture is actually better on my new tv! I have wondered if maybe the MS cable has a scaler chip or something because Xbox games always looked better @ 480p then anything on PS2 @ the same resolution. Any idea TechnoON Top? Anyone wanting the best picture for their Xbox (and who's no good at soldering) had better snap these cables up on Ebay while they can - think in a few years they'll be as expensive as the Gamecube ones. When they come up on Ebay UK now they go for like £70... price is always creeping up.

iv never owned an official MS component box, but as far as i know there is no scaler chip built into it. the cables i made have no scaler chip and the cheap cables defiantly had no scaler chip.

It will always looks better than PS2, the image quality for that console is really bad compared to the Xbox. I've used both consoles with component and scart, and the video signal of the Xbox is always a lot cleaner.

So you make a component cable but not add the optical as well? The Original Xbox was known for it's amazing surround sound.

hey man thanks by the tutorial. I`m trying to make my own but I have a question, in this picture i.imgur.com/GNLkMuX.jpg the pin 12 that you shoul in yout diagram is pin 24 and it says DC RETURN, it shows that the Y ground is pin 20 or 10 on your diagram. er, so the last one 12 is just ground right? its not a voltage pin
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 7 жыл бұрын
i would avoid using a different diagram not saying its not right but i made mine to be as user friendly as possible. also looking at both mine and that one would just become confusing. but yes pin 12 is just a ground. on the other diagram it shows pin 12 as being a ground also. hope you figured it out sorry for taking so long to get back to you

i just picked up a cheap component cable ... it's shitty. my av cable got a better signal. might aswell buy a 360 component cable, seems to be even cheaper in my area anyway lol.

Is it possible to make your own ps2 component cable?
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 6 жыл бұрын
im sure it is, though the cheap cable i bought for my PS2 has no interference on my Phat ps2, only on my Slim Ps2 but i chocked that up to the cheap knock off AC adapter i bought for the slim. are you having interference issues?

TechnoOnTop I don't even have one... also I wanted to ask you something: I have a hdtv and I'm running my ps2 with composite cables (red, white, yellow) and the picture is terrible... will component cables fix this?

What is the best solution for getting a good/sharp picture?
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 6 жыл бұрын
ahh ok, well I would recommend getting some component cables, they will definitely improve your picture vs composite like i said i bought some cheap ones on ebay and they dont give me any interference on my Phat ps2 and the picture is nice. another option would be some type of upscaler/ conversion box but i would only do that if your tv doesnt have a component hook up

Instead of wrecking a perfectly good composite cable I'm buying an ebay cheapo to get the jack and a Monster brand component male to male for the shielded wiring. Wish me luck!
@TechnoOnTop

alright man! sounds good be careful with those cheapo jacks the pins can get pulled out easily and they never quite go back in right. good luck and thanks for watching!

Perhaps my iron is just too wide and my solder sucks but all i did was end up ruining two cables... Soldering to those tiny inward pins by the black dividers is fucking difficult.
@mersa316
@mersa316 6 жыл бұрын
how the fuck do you get the wire to stay in the right place while you solder holy shit
@TechnoOnTop
@TechnoOnTop 6 жыл бұрын
a very fine tip on the soldering iron definitely makes things easier... though im pretty sure the very first time I did it i was just using a standard conical tip but if you're melting the plastic between the pins your tip is probably too wide. as for keeping the wires in place you could use some tweezers? maybe some helping hands would be helpful also. hope that helps that sucks that you have been having trouble with it. keep at it im sure you will accomplish it! thanks for watching
