They look deceptively simple, but there are more steps than meets the eyes. Thank you for explaining each of the steps so clearly and making it sound so easy. I hope you enjoyed the ball.

Thank you for your kind comment Kate - Breeches are probably the most tricky item of the Regency wardrobe to get right, especially on the fit, but it is worth the effort. The ball was excellent, thank you!

I love Laughing Moon's patterns as well, but it's just so much easier to see it done first with fabric. You've saved me a lot of time staring at black and white illustrations with very tired eyes. Thanks so much!

Thank you for your kind comment - we are happy to be of help - I can remember the strain of mentally trying to convert line drawings into 3D reality, which was one of the reasons I began to post these videos. I have started another, so watch this space!

I'm a visual person so I have a hard time reading sewing instructions but I followed along with a small scale paper version of this pattern and now I feel confident doing this full scale with material. I struggle with trousers. Best tutorial I've watched.

🤎OMG. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I got the moon merch pattern, but your instructions and explanations cleared out so many questions. This, my very first trousers are close to be done thanks to you, Sir. I think I'll have to check out all the rest of your content. 😊 You got a new subscriber 💚🐌

Lordy, Lordy - you are fabulous with your video - trying to do my first pair of breeches and I have a different pattern with only a few pieces - I am thinking there's a lot they don't go into even on the instructions- you show everything here so well - I can make up what's not on my pattern at this point but, putting things together after watching your video is such a help - thank you so much for being so clear and precise with your assembly of the pieces and all the extra stitching - I have fallen into doing a lot of hand stitching myself because it's just easier than doing it on the machine as well as relaxing side of it!

Thank you for such a lovely comment - my idea in making the video in such detail was to encourage others to have a go - it is just a matter of dealing with each stage at a time. If you like trousers, why not try pantaloons?

Thank you, Louisa, I'm glad it was helpful. The pattern can be obtained from Laughing Moon, Pattern no. 127 Men's Narrow Fall Breeches - Laughing Moon have their own website, or their patterns can be bought through other dealers.

What would happen if you cut the pattern on the bias on woven fabric? Would it get rid of the baggy seat?
@RegencyRumBluffers Жыл бұрын
Cutting on the bias allows the fabric to flex and mould itself around the body in a different way, but it will not remove an excess of material. To remove the bagginess and get the breeches to fit more closely, you would have to alter the cut of the pattern - alternatively you could alter it on a fitting since you would have an excess to work with. Cutting on the bias does not so much introduce stretch, as flexibility. By way of illustration, cut two squares - one on the bias and one straight. Hold the squares by opposite sides and move your hands up and down in opposite directions. The fibres on the bias cut will slide over each other and make diamond shapes keeping the surface flat, while the square cut fibres will try to remain as squares then wrinkle, but in neither case does the fabric reduce or increase in size. Cutting on the bias was a strategy sometimes used in georgian times for breeches, but I have to say that I do not know enough about it to be of any further help. Hey, give it a try and let us know how you get on!

Hello, I really admire your work and explanations. I have this pattern and I'm going to "attack" a pair of knickers. Would you be so kind as to tell me what type of fuse material you are using. Thank you and good afternoon
@RegencyRumBluffers Жыл бұрын
The material is called fusible interfacing which is a stiff lining, much like buckram which has a layer of glue on one side. When you iron it, the glue melts and sticks to the fabric it is lining without marking it on the other side. Beware, over time it can break down and cause bubbles to appear if the fabric is not very heavy or the fusing is not properly done. Another way to do it is to lay a lining such as buckram with no glue on the fabric and stitch round within the seam allowance to hold it in place. Once you have sewn the seam constructing the garment, you can cut away the lining right next to the seam which then means you do not have extra bulky material in the seam, but the lining is in place to support the fabric. Another technique is to pad stitch the lining to the fabric - see my video on making a cloak where I pad stitch the buckram interfacing to the collar. The fusible interface is quicker and easier but not as durable or historically accurate. I hope this helps, and good luck with your project.

Thank you very much for your valuable advice. It's very nice to find people like you who share their own experiences, as there's nothing similar in my mother tongue (French). Thank you
@jearnott2 жыл бұрын
Chris, you don’t mention what material you are using and how much material is required. You mention you are using curtain lining for the pockets, but what is suitable material for the breeches and are there unsuitable fabrics?
@RegencyRumBluffers2 жыл бұрын
Hi JA, thank you for your comment - depending on size, you should need no more than 2.75 yards of fabric and about 2.5 yards of lining if you want to fully line them. The pattern also calls for just less than a yard of interfacing. Fabric can be Silk, Cotton, Wool, linen or Leather. Fabric choice will depend on intended use - you would not use silk to go riding, and not leather to go to a ball. All of these natural materials are historically accurate but have no give, hence the baggy seat. If you want to cheat, and want a skin tight fit, you can use more modern stretch fabrics - nobody is likely to know!
