This is how I imagine Mulberry bags were made back in the 70s/80s. Now they are incredibly expensive but mass-produced tat, made from split hide glued to a backer ( which frequently comes apart, looking at complaints on various mulberry groups.) You can’t tell them apart from Michael Kors etc in terms of style, Its good to see proper leatherwork skills still being used to create wonderful leather bags.

Great video, thank you. While so many leather crafting videos are a bit rinse and repeat, I feel like your videos are more informative and I come out learning a lot more due to your depth of knowledge. Please keep teaching us, we do appreciate it. Out of curiosity what temperature do you set your edge tool at, or was it cold?
@JHLeather4 жыл бұрын
Glad you like them 🙂 The crease is heated to give a better result, I use a hot plate to heat mine. I don't measure how hot the crease is as over the years I can just tell when it is right. Use a scrap piece to test on, if it's too hot it will burn the leather and if it is not warm enough you can pop it back on to heat up for a bit longer. Hope that makes sense.
@kenjohnson33334 жыл бұрын
@@JHLeather sweet. Makes sense. Thanks for the tip.

A bit too late for this, but I hope Jo or someone knowledgeable replies please, as the info on forums are either too little to base a decision on or from unprofessional sources. Jo, you are using two different awls. 1. one for scratching, apparently with a round tip, and 2. one for stitching, which looks like having a flat tip? Does it mean that, for stitching, one should only use a flat awl and NOT a round tip awl? Put differently, if I am to buy an awl for stitching would you recommend me getting a flat awl and not a round one? I hope I am clear.
@JHLeather3 жыл бұрын
Heya, I use the round awl for marking out my work on to the leather and for stitching I use a diamond awl. The diamond awl is shaped to match the stitch marks and so helps the thread to sit in that slanted angle that is common with hand stitching. Hope that makes sense, here is a link to a diamond awl blade - www.abbeyengland.com/awl-blade-998.html
@sardarvayghannezhad96733 жыл бұрын
Back to my own question after a few days, and with help of Jo's comment, a rather newbie-friendly reply would be: There are two main types of awls, as Jo said earlier: 1. scratch awls, for marking leather or simply punching through with no specific sensitivity for the dimensions of the punch. These have a round tip. 2. stitching awls, for piercing the already pricked marks made by your pricking iron. There are two sub-types of stitching awls: 2.1 those with a diamond tip and 2.2 those with a flat tip either of these two types is used with its relevant pricking iron- Japanese vs European. Japanese pricking irons prick leather with more of a diamond shape marks, and therefore followed by a diamond awl, while European/French pricking irons prick leather with more of a flat (i.e almost a line) marks, and therefore are used with a flat awl. I think Jo is using Japanese. Haven't had my tools delivered yet, but safe bet I'll sound too pedantic to myself after a few months of leathering. :D

@JHLeather4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I have a few different awls they are: Smallest one from Abbey England - best awl handle and 1 3/4" blade (its very old and I have dropped it a few times so its pretty short) Largest one with flat sides - They don't do the specific one I use any more but it is from laederiet.com/soegeresultater/?search=awl+handle and then the blade would be probably the 50 mm laederiet.com/produkter/170-chisels/5170-diamond-pointed-awl/ One with the black handle is from www.blackmountainsleather.com/collections/tools/products/pricking-awl-ebony-wood-handle and I got the 2.3mm French blade as I wanted to try something different. It's really good but a bit fine for stitching thicker buckle turns. Hope that helps! Jo
