hey Crafsman. I love your content. I want to share a little hack with you. If you melt your petroleum Jelly it becomes brushable and easier to spread for a short period of time. I like to scoop some into a tin or jar and then stick that onto a candle warmer for a bit. The key is to keep it set on the candle warmer. EXTRA TIP: once you get it into the mold, you can run the lubricated mold over some mild heat to level things out a bit. I tend to be very conservative with the amounts. I hope this helps someone who needs it. Thank you for all you posting your knowledge on youtube. I've learned so much over the years because of it.

Tip: Glue a print from your stamp to the top side of the stamp, in the correct orientation. Helps avoid silly mistakes, helps finding the right stamp if you have a drawer full. Old school stamps, the way books were printed in china for centuries: Copy your artwork onto tracing paper; glue the tracing paper to a (rubber) slab, back side up; looking through the paper at the artwork, carve away to make islands of th artwork. Remove the paper bits and stamp.
@tomsmith3045
@tomsmith3045 3 жыл бұрын
There's a faster but slightly more dangerous version that we used to use in the 70s. Take your artwork, flip it upside down over a light table and trace the outline with a ballpoint pen. That gives you a reverse drawing. Then take the rubber stencil (or stamp) and wipe it down with gasoline. Immediately put the pen ink side of the drawing on the stencil, and rub it with a roller or wooden stick. The ink will transfer to the rubber. Then cut it out with a heavy duty x-acto knife. That works for stencils for stamps and for rubber stencils for sandblasting. Suggest not smoking during the operation.
@lollylolly8186
@lollylolly8186 4 жыл бұрын
Always sand your new stamps with 220 grit sandpaper. Gently run it horizontally then vertically. It gives the stamp surface something for ink and paint to adhere to. If you use an ink pad, use the pad to ink the stamp. So you press the inkpad onto the surface not vice verse. If you are using paint, use a brayer to spread out your paint and thinly coat your stamp. This is good practice for any stamps commercial or handmade.

This is a great idea! I used to make stamps with the little rubber letters, but this looks much better and easier. You can buy or make stamp pads, probably for less than $5, and get or make colored ink for them. The nicest pads have a smooth fabric layer on top that is tight, so that just the printing part of the stamp gets the ink. The plain felt pads work ok, but they get ink in the little grooves, too, and eventually the grooves get clogged up with dried ink.

The cast will always be the same as the original. If you need the cast to be reversed, like in the case of a stamp that has letters than the item you make the mold from needs to be reversed. To my knowledge there's no easy trick to making that happen unfortunately, just a matter of sculpting the mirror image and making a mold of that reverse version.

After having done a really similar thing by hand to extrude a 2d shape in to something more 3d, the stamp-o-matic link looks to be a huge time saver

Us Australians call cornstarch cornflour and cornflour cornmeal. As such, if you want to make the silicon putty and live in Australia, buy cornflour

I never tried it, but looks like you could 3D print the negative mold right away (instead of going all the way with molding a positive). If you print in PLA you can bend the mold slightly in hot water (wear a layer or two of gloves) so that you get a roller like stamp. So, you use it like a rolling press, rather than trying to apply all ink everywhere at once like in 12:35. Flat stamp has to be very precise. Sanding to a smooth surface like in 11:53 might be a good step for the 3d mold, depends on print quality. Obviously you may as well print a handle for the stamp, with arched base. Even use that same arc for molding the hot PLA.

Fantastic stuff! I always glue silicone parts with silicone, it's the only thing that sticks.

If I could boil down what makes you special it's that you said "medium chain triglycerides" and "Firmnicity" in back to back sentence. It is literally impossible for that not to brighten day.

Have you ever used silicone putty to make a case for a phone or similar?

No no you could! I was thinking about that, but i was worried about the toxicity of the silicone, but i think once it cures you should be able to wash/sanitize it and it should be ok to use

I've seen folks put the corn starch and silicone into a large ziplock, then seal it and knead. It contains mess and you can get repeatable results when you weigh out them thins over a scale and mix to completion.

Thanks CrafsMan! This is exactly what I've been looking for ... I plan to make silicone stamps to create designs on melted solder. I'm excited to try this! Your video library is a treasure house of inspiration and how-to. I like how you demonstrate the results of all your techniques and experiments ... I like to see how things work. 😁😁😁
