I am a trained electrician (UK) but can't use that skill in Aus. When I was restoring an ex-military 109 V8 FFR in NZ, I shorted out two 12v, in series, 400 a/h batteries! The main wiring loom running along the bulkhead didn't last long. So had to build a new one. One thing that I was surprised about the loom on my 1984 90 when I did an auto conversion was that the loom had wring for automatic transmissions ("P" and "N" wiring to disable the ignition). That was just before LR started selling auto 90's in the US in the 1990's.
@VintageRestorationsAustralia4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that, intresting stuff, I never knew they did any autos!
@pmjd424 жыл бұрын
@@VintageRestorationsAustralia Thanks. Only US (CA) market AFAIK and now you can't find anything for less than US$70k, more now I expect. I was inspired by someone called Ian Ashcroft (UK, deceased. His business still operates) who used to do V8/BW65 conversions with modified valve packs. The great thing about an auto is you can change gear without dropping drive to the wheels.

@@pmjd42 Series 1 with an CVT ? clash of worlds :-)
@pmjd424 жыл бұрын
@@VintageRestorationsAustralia If we put originality aside, in an 80" S1 I would go with a Ford 2.8 EFI V6 and whatever the auto box was for them. There are kits available (Edit: I should say were available). A V8 is nice in an 80" S1, but too big IMO, too many axles, shafts and diffs popping, let alone the layshaft. A CVT, not sure. I was going to do a V6 conversion on my 1958 S2 but went the 88" RR chassis path.

I wired up my 1960 series 2 from scratch....it had nothing when I bought it....it now has a mass of spaghetti that runs through 8 fuses and 4 relays!....none of it follows the original format, but it all makes sense to me :)

Wow what a great video. I would like one of his looms for my 64 2a 109 pickup. They are so professional looking. What was the place in England he mentioned that makes the looms?
@gonesailing4 жыл бұрын
Hi Graem, thank you for the positive words. Might take you up on that 😉. I think I am getting better at making them, with a bit of practice. The only snag is knowing how long to make each sub loom or wiring run, so I’ve tended to over estimate, then can cut to the right length once on the Series vehicle. The place in the UK is called Autosparks, they do a professional looking loom, with price points that vary depending upon if you want the old cloth style of wiring or modern plastic coated wire. You can specify lots of options too. Sit down when you see the cost, especially if you want overseas shipping. I also read that there is a long wait, given the CV just now.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Graham, you need to look at the land rover series 2 club forum. Free to sign up to that forum. Here is the link to the wiring diagrams. It’s filed under workshop wisdom, but this link should get you there once you are a forum member. www.series2club.co.uk/new_forum/index.php?board=3.0 p.s. the wiring diagrams changed a bit over the years, and the series 3 wiring loom is a little different, but the essentials should be the same and these diagrams will give you a good start.
