There are hand held pump sprayers available, usually used for gardening or indoor plants. In my experience, you can get them up to a higher nozzle pressure than those larger types like in the video. The extra pressure would likely help disperse the oil into a finer mist. As an added bonus, at least where I live, you can get them at a dollarama for four bucks (Canadian "dollar" store).

Fantastic tip and it looks great! Ok two questions an I will look at comments but how does it smell and why catch bees? As a suggestion you can build little bee nests for them by drilling holes in a piece of wood and nailing to a tree or hanging. They are pollinators. Save the bees. Thank you for your video.

Great Video! I was about to buy stain sealer combo for $45 a gallon which would come out to $2,000 for my fence. I was like....now way a farmer would do that and I started searching for a farmer recipe which is the 50/50 diesel and used motor oil. I added an extra ingredient that you might consider. Borax and Boric Acid. These are the key ingredients in Tim bor and Boracare and also very cheap. These will keep the wood boring insects (termites included) away along with wood rot pathogens and mold. You won't need those carpenter bee traps anymore. I am getting ready to run my first batch today. I can't wait to do a cost analysis at the end. I'm glad you did the match demonstration too. My wife was worried about the flammability aspect. I explained that linseed oil in store bought stains is way more volatile and stain rags will spontaneously combust. Thanks again for the video.

I built and stained over a thousand rough sawn pine sheds. Would mix 4.5 gallons of diesel and add anywhere from 1/2 -1 cup of coal tar to make a light/medium/dark brown stain. Applied with a "Good" pump sprayer (Hudson)- kind with an adjustable brass tip that was easy to clean- not the cheap , big box plastic adjust a nozzle type the poster tried- you could see the terrible spray pattern it generated. With a good sprayer, you can really dial it in and get quite detailed with it. Nice work here -looked great!!

Beautiful! use motor oil as a stain inside and outside without adding anything to it. The best part is the clean up. I keep the brushes/rollers wrapped in plastic and reuse them over and over. They never dry out and all are always ready to go! The smell goes away in less than week, usually a day or two. Recently stained an entire inside staircase (treads and risers) and the smell was unnoticeable in 2 days unless you bend down and take a big whiff. The sprayer works too but it always seems to be windy and overspray becomes a problem so I prefer to just slap it on. It’s slower than spraying but I get a lot less on me and everything else. The color outside seems to only last about a year depending on the type of wood, it’s finish (rough or smooth) and the amount of direct sunlight it receives. But I have used oil by the bucketful as a result of vehicle and equipment maintenance so it literally costs me nothing except the time to apply/reapply. And a little goes a long way! I encourage everyone to stay away from the death in a can stuff from the store and go with something safer, cleaner, far cheaper, and just plain better.

I generate a lot of used synthetic based oils as a millwright, one of which is a 625 with an orange tinge after use. I take 5 gallons of the used 625 and add a quart of common dark walnut stain. It mixes well and cuts the viscosity of the 625 base to a nice, usable degree. This stuff works amazingly well as both a finish and a protectant. Great tips in your video as well! The shed looks fantastic.

a tip is to mix the used oil and diesel together first, and then filter....goes through faster. i also use this on any rusty steel or shovel handles etc. it soaks in and is not greasy.

That looks like dyed diesel which is aka farm use non taxed. Regular diesel has a light green tint to it the dyed is red. Dyed so if you run it on the hwy they can fine the crap out of you good video. 1quart of that dye can turn 7000 gallons of diesel from light green to red.

Run your used oil through a sz100 paint strainer. You will be able to run in a pneumatic spayer. Heat the oil first so it goes through the filter quicker.

That was a great video. I’m doing this to my chicken coop. Rough cut pine. I didn’t know to mix the oil with diesel. I’ll be doing that tomorrow. Thank you. I’ll send a pic of before and after. One more thing will this mixture bother my chickens or is it safe

I just finished my back deck with this method. Works great, stinks for about a week. A good respirator is strongly advisable if you using a Wagoner power sprayer. Power sprayers atomize whatever they spray and even though you don't think it is going to get into your lungs it does. Blow your nose after you spray and look at what color it is. I know from experience, l sprayed kitchen cabinets for 2 years everyday. When we first started we didn't have respirators just those masks that everyone thinks is protecting them from covid! USE A RESPIRATOR! Oh ,and by the way I ended up in the hospital for 8 days this year with a double lung infection, coughing up blood for a week. Not saying that it was from inhaling paint and finish fumes but it probably didn't help matters!

Gary how did it fair over time? Do you have any problems with it getting on shoes or clothes? Debating on doing it on the top boards and railings. I dont want to regret it when friends lean on it, and will be putting a pool up to it so dont want issues with barefeet.
