On dad's farm we had a lot of used motor oil. Mainly we just collected it and there was a guy that came around and would take it. But we had tried using it to heat the shop in the winter with a small furnace made to burn used oil. It worked, mostly. But we didn't have enough oil to heat the shop all winter so wasn't really worth it. We also used to spray a little on the gravel road to hold down dust.

When I was about 11 or 12, I decided to take all of my family's old rusted axes/shears/etc and clean em up. Used sand and a wire brush to clean up the rust, and then coated them in used motor oil. They sparkled! I've also seen it used for truck frame undercoating, and on mailbox posts for treating the wood against rot (that's a wranglerstar one haha). Hadn't thought of putting it in a little oil can for lubricant...That's a good idea to mentally note.

I haven't taken oil back to the auto store in over 10 years. I have used dozens of gallons of oil for stating all kinds of projects and even given plenty of it away. Is one of the greatest things I've ever used for so many projects just like you have. I highly recommend it. And yes please use gloves when handling it. But it is fantastic. I have plenty of projects that I've been out in northeastern horrible New York weather from 100° to minus 10 and snow and ice and the wood holds up even without being pressure treated. Nothing mixes with oil so it's always the perfect thing. It has saved me hundreds of dollars from fencing to trailer sides to indoor rustic projects.

I built a waste oil heater and I use engine oil, hydraulic & transmission fluid in it. It heats my shop well. I also use it for bar / chain lube on my chain saws, and to coat the underside of my riding mower to help prevent rust. : )

Used motor oil works really well to fix tire rot actually. It worked on my RV when it had been parked for a while & I NEEDED to move it so we were scared to see the rot. Googled and saw the used motor oil idea & it did work, tires were driven 3 hrs away with i issues. Minor panic at first… lol.

some people say atf or used motor oil as tire dressing will promote sidewall cracks in a couple of years. Don't know which school to believe! I've been injecting atf into otherwise leaky tires (leak around the bead only) to stop the leak with no ill effect so far.

Thanks. I've been using it for hardware. (Mower nuts and bolts & hinges like with your trailer example) I'm surprised how much gets reused. I have a group of old Walker Turner woodworking machines that are in storage. They came to me with rust, I paint on the used oil as the machines wait in storage. Some of my videos may show the machines...the oil evaporates faster than I imagined.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects3 жыл бұрын
Always good to re-use something that would be otherwise tossed away. I don't deal with rust problems being in the southwest like much of the rest of the country does so "painting" used oil on is kind of foreign to me but sounds like a seriously good idea now that I'm aware of it.

I clean my guns with it. The detergents in good synthetic motor oil do a great job at cleaning basicly any mental. I don't use it to lube the guns, though I'll clean it off and use new oil depending on the gun. I might actually use new synthetic motor oil instead of dedicated gun oil. Motor oil is normally thicker and does a better job maintaining metal parts in guns you plan on storing for a long time. Especially if you don't know if the place you are storing the guns will maintain a stable temperature and humidity level. Guns I know I'll be using regularly. I'll use gun oil.

@ClownWhisper2 жыл бұрын
Yeah motor oil is absolutely inappropriate for a cutting fluid I'm a machinist and I promise you I will never use just motor oil there are ways to condition it adding sulfur things like that there's formulas that you can dig up that will make decent cutting fluid but it's still not really a appropriate because cutting fluids are made from mineral oils and they're much more appropriate.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. If I was a machinist, I’d probably spend the good money on the right product but as a DIYer, used motor oil is FAR better than nothing and it works for the -50 holes I drill into steel a year.
