Thrashin Supply's Lance Coury shows you how to clean up your stainless steal exhaust.
Stainless Steel does require maintenance. The best way to maintain your exhaust is to remove road grime and and oils periodically.
Depending on your location, if the dirt/rocks on the road contain iron in them, they can deposit onto the exhaust and cause tarnishing. You can remove these blemishes/discoloration by using Scotch Brite pads and Metal Polish.
ALWAYS GO WITH THE GRAIN OF THE METAL. NEVER SWIRL.
Green Scotch Brite for the brushed look.
Grey Scotch Brite to shine that up.
Metal Polish and Micro Fiber to make it show polished.
Make sure to always check all bolts to ensure the exhaust is still tight.
Doing this will ensure your Stainless Exhaust stays looking like new for years and years to come!

I did the same think on my TBR 2into1 stainless. Same scuffing, following the grain. I used white diamond metal polish from autozone and hit it with the 360 grit scotch bright pad. Washed off the white diamond whipped off with blue shop towels really good. Finally hit it with 800 grit scotch bright followed by a really fine steel wool. Pipes were super clean and removed any grime and detail cleaner. When I rode my bike again, the same beautiful golden color started to return, just without the stains and burn marks lol. Good video.

I put a brand new TBR Gen 2 stainless 2-1 and installed it on my Sportster in August and rode the shit out of the bike for the 2 months of riding season we had left to break in the new motor build. In that time I got really lazy and didn't clean the bike once. The exhaust looks like it was on tour with the dirtiest of dirtbags 😆 🤣 I am in Canada otherwise I would ride year round! I pulled the exhaust off last night and I'm going to try giving it a good cleaning! I'll have to check out the white diamond metal polish!

@Greenmachine305

Just scotchbrite it again to get the rust off, then wipe clean and apply a very light coat of oil that has a high flashpoint. Be sure to apply it evenly, then immediately run the bike up to operating temperature to lock in the new color.
@Greenmachine305
@Greenmachine305 Жыл бұрын
Stainless is stain-less not stain-proof. The scotchbrite increases the surface area of the steel at a microscopic level, allowing oxygen to penetrate. Your water solution introduced oxygen into all the nooks and cranmies of the surface. Don't do that. Use oil instead, to form an oxygen barrier. You'll find the colors will be amazing.
@Greenmachine305
@Greenmachine305 Жыл бұрын
One more word of advice: polished steel resists rusting a million times better than finely scratched steel. Try to use the finest abrasive you can to remove the rust, and put a smooth, uniform surface back on the pipes.
@johnnytalley3006
@johnnytalley3006 Жыл бұрын
@@Greenmachine305 Thank you for the response I really appreciate it. So by oil do you mean something like WD40 or an actual oil? I was able to get a good polish back on it, coated in WD40 but am still having some oxidation appearing on it but it's definitely better than before.
@Greenmachine305
@Greenmachine305 Жыл бұрын
@@johnnytalley3006 Any oil you like. Cooking oil, petroleum oil, any oil. An even, light coating. Then immediately bring the pipes up to operating temperature. It will smoke at first, but after it burns off it will look great. For example, the oil on my hands caused smears that I didn't wipe off after installing my pipes. The smears turned a lovely blue.

Man, do you guys not listen? The gold coloration comes back. He said it like 3 separate times. It wasn't gold when you bought it new. It returns it to new, then when you ride it, turns gold again. It's just cleaning the pipe. The gold coloration comes from the heat going through the pipe and reacting with the metal.

@@THRASHIN Its what everyone who wants their stainless pots and pans looking like new has been doing since stainless steel was invented. What it does is gently dissolve the thin colored chromium oxide layer with a mild acid. You could do it instantly with muriatic acid, but its very harsh, and will open the surface to rust.
@Greenmachine305
@Greenmachine305 Жыл бұрын
@@THRASHIN One more thing, its the vinegar that removes the color stains. The baking soda acts like a soft abrasive to remove any surface residue without scratching. You can use vinegar alone. If you use baking soda, use very little otherwise you will negate the acidity of the vinegar, and it won't dissolve the colored chromium oxide layer.
