Hi Delboy - if you have rust on chrome, dip a lightly screwed up piece of silver foil in coca cola and splash a bit on the chrome as well, give it a gentle rub, bingo all clean and shiny and because of the soft density of the foil it does not scratch. Really good for wheel rims, handlebars anywhere there's chrome.Thanks for the video on the Bleach, all these tips are handy Thanks.

Yes indeed Del, I have used this for a couple of years now purely for rust removal ever since I was no longer able to buy the acid on its own. I’m restoring a zzr 1100 with a badly rusted rear brake disc and various brackets and I can’t wait to drop them all in overnight to get them prepped for repainting.

Sure thing buddy, I'm gonna have another crack at my Harley pipes, as it wouldn't touch the staining by itself, as you saw, I had to hit them with a Scothbrite too, am gonna take up suggestions of some of the guys here to let it soak for 20mins and see if that helps it float the dirt off... otherwise, it's back to the Scotchbrite aye!

Long term it will burn chrome and damage it and you'll regret the choice, perfect for stainless steel, but trying cleaning chrome with cola and tin foil, works really well and doesn't scratch, give it a try!

Hahaha the harpic, me and my mate joke about this, every time I do my pipes, compound and mop, autosol, Polish, heat up engine and get the pipes gold (all the polish that didn't buff out) then the magic, harpic with a rag, silver again, wash off the harpic or it'll stain, heat them up again, no gold, no gold for weeks!!!!! The stuff is amazing, got rid of rust on my front discs too, watch it on the actual disc though as it turns the metal pink. Delboy ur a legend mate! Harpic ftw!!

Don't use brake clean on pieces of metal you are about to weld. The chemical in the brake cleaner is Tetrachloroethylene. When this chemical is exposed with excessive heat and argon (used in MIG and TIG welding) it also produces phosgene which is extremely poisonous that will lead to organ damage or even death. Acetone is recommended to clean metal before welding, but never, ever brake cleaners.

With the muffler clamps Harley recommend replacing them which sounds like a money grab but just from personal experience I reused the clamps and they were as tight as can be but the mufflers still worked loose, put a new set on and no issues after that. Great video very helpful.

I'd say it's not really a money scam, maybe just a back covering exercise, the bolts that squeeze the clamps up are a bit rusty on mine now, and rust always weakens things, but I'm gonna re-use them anyway and just keep an eye on them, after all, I don't have a limitless budget... thanks for feedback buddy, much appreciated.

Been using this on my headers for a while now. Can’t add pictures in the comments, otherwise I could show you a before and after. The difference is amazing. Follow it up with some autosol polish and headers look like new. Just did mine again a couple of days ago. For really stubborn areas, I use a washing up sponge with the scotch brite pad on the back. Pisses the wife off as I take the used one from the kitchen so it’s not too abrasive lol.

Just out of interest, I stumbled across this video as the first one today on a google search of "Harpic rust removal". Reason being, I'm a professional fabricator working on a project and stripping down old equiptment for parts, which are heavily rusty (like a singer industrial head and clutch motor). I read that commercial rust removers contain Phosphoric Acid, which is often the best choice for rust removal...but it's expensive, very in some cases for a tiny amount. So I started researching what types of acids EAT steel (I spent weeks on some bolt removal, everything tried and was so fed up I just wanted to dissolve the bolt instead.) Long story long, yesterday I was in the pound shop and came across this same brand of Harpic and though "You know what...I think this will work". The thing I wanted to ask is, you mentioned that it's Hydrochloric Acid. Apparently Hydrochloric Acid will remove rust but can also dissolve / corrode steel. Can you double check on the back of that Harpic bottle, in the ingredients section and also the description? It should say something like "...contains among others thing Phospheric acid

For Indian viewers. Comparing the uk and india website, it seems Harpic power + in India is the normal version of harpic. What you seen in this video i believe is called "Harpic germ and stain blaster" (green or purple bottle) in India . I say this because their product descriptions are similar and also because Harpic calls them the most "powerful toilet cleaner among all variants" in their respective websites. Not sure though since i don't know the formulations

good video Del. I liked the way you protected the rest of the bike before going any where near it with Harpic, very professional. It looks like the Harley downpipe may have been chromed hence it did not have the same effect. Ultimately it will take the chrome off and reveal the stainless underneath and I think that may have happened here. Long on the short dont use Harpic on anything that has been chromed,

Taken from google: Harpic contains hydrochloric acid which dissolves limescale, calcium carbonate (CaCO3). And in the UK I believe the "10X" refers to 10% of the ingredients is made up of hydrochloric acid, stand corrected.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren ,yeah i guessed it would be hard to get outside the UK.. but its basically a super strength limescale remover for domestic use.. The actice ingredient seems to be the 9% Hydrochloric Acid.. so as long as any product has thatr.. it should perform the same i guess..!! Good luck with it, and keep warm buddy.. Del.

Hydrochloric acid or any bleaches (eg sodium hypochlorite or any chlorine) will actually cause metal to corrode so DO NOT let it soak. Thoroughly wash it off if you use this stuff. Personally I just go straight for the metal polish (autosol).

Thats great. I put new stainless steel pipes on my fazer a while ago, but with a fibreglass exhaust wrap; should I remove the wrap? then clean the pipes underneath? the wrap is pretty dirty, how do you clean the wrapping? cheers
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 жыл бұрын
You can gently scrub the exhaust wrap with a nail brush and soapy water to get the dirt out, rince it clean with clean warm water... but it is known that after a while pipes will start to corrode under the wrap as it harbors the damp more then when they are in fresh air.. so if you're worried, strip the wrap, clean the pieps and replace it with new wrap maybe..?

Hi Joe, you're dead right on aluminium, but on the other hand, if you have an aluminium item that is colour anodized and you want to polish back up bright silver shiny, then soak it in this for about 1/2hr and wash it off, the colour rinses off before your eyes revealing bare aluminium underneath...!

A few comments beneath here comapring this product to acid... it isn't, it's a powerful alkali (bleach). Both strong acids and alkali's are nasty stuff but if talking about "neutralising" acids when using this, well no you are neutralising an alkali (with lemon juice/vinegar etc). Top tip this video, just don't leave any residue as it will oxidise (rust).

Be careful using that on fasteners, the hydrochloric acid can cause hydrogen embrittlement on any stressed parts. A post bake can help remove the Hydrogen after the fact.

Did you use brake cleaner to remove bleach residue on the exhaust, and were you using a hand held water spray to remove the bleach from the screws in the tray?. Is there a recommended thing to do to the metal after using the bleach?

Richard don't the autosol make ur pipes gold as soon as they heat up? I do it other way round, Polish, get them gold, then harpic, buff up with a clean rag
@ruudboy26
@ruudboy26 5 жыл бұрын
ibz6969 it's always been a problem no matter how hard I buff the polish off no matter how beautifully polished I get them within minutes they're gold, my mate told me to try it, did it on unpolished pipes and they stayed silver, tried it my way once and for the first time I managed to retain polished silver pipes for at least a fortnight, bloody good stuff ay, works well in the toilet too, guarantee u could make a killing repackaging and selling this

Any ideas whats best for removing mild pitting on my Bonneville cast alloy wheels?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham, ok, is the pitting in the lacquer, or is it bare alloy that's pitted? If it's bare, then the old trick is ever decreasing fine wet n' dry, finishing with 1200grit and soapy water, then Autosol polish to get it mirror shiney! But if it's lacquered, then you need to get that off first with some paint stripper and then repeat the above for a fine finish... but if elbow grease, but it works, and they'll come up like new!

Bar Keepers Friend is better to use as it contains oxalic acid. stainless steel is not very resistant to hydrochloric acid and must be neutralised properly.

Hey Del! how are you my friend? I was checking your video and since it´s been 4 years from that, can you show the welding test sheet again? I´m asking this because so far I´m working on the exhaust of my 2002 FXDWG and I´m afraid of some cons (if ther is) with this product! As always, nice to hear about you Del, your friend Paco.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Hi Paco, good to hear from you, we hope you're well? If you're worried about using it on welds, then it's ok as long as you wash it off THOROUGHLY afterwards, it contains a mild acid, which is how it works so effectively, but if you leave any residue on the metal, the acid will continue burning and lead to corrosion... so wash, wash, wash with lots of soap and water and remove all traces of the acid and it will be fine.... and of course, only use on stainless steel (NEVER on chrome)... and if you are in any doubt, then do a small 'test piece' first on some scrap... hope that helps and good luck my friend.

And to protect your steel I use WD40 with a heat gun. Put in on, heat it up and voila :P

I like to paint the inside of the pipes with high heat paint. It really minimizes the yellowing and bluing of your pipes

Hi Del & Penny. I'm in lockdown just like everyone else and came across a "simple skill" which may interest you. I'm using this comment option because I don't know how else to send you the details. The subject is "Ball Turning with a Boring Head" (may not be what you're thinking). :-) The utube channel owner is Ade Swash. Stay Safe Regards from S Africa Clive

I used this last year around early march on my down pipes and it worked a treat. I did the same thing again during the summer and the sun dried the product before I could wash it off causing the pipes to be discoloured and dull almost like it has taken the shine out of the metal/chrome. Be careful guys!

We use this to remove the chrome coating from the plastic kit parts you find in the model making hobby like the bike kits that Tamiya make so that we can respray them for a more authentic look. Great work Del, love the videos mate they're brilliant. 😉👍❤

on some of the videos about the harpic, they recommend washing it off when you get the result you want,as the acid carries on working. another channel used milk after instead of putting water on the pipes as its alkiline and deactivates the acid..going to give this a go on my scoot exhaust..

How about doing a little demo on Triumph Thruxton 1200r exhaust? I heard about this on a forum and a few people have raved about it but no video or pictures.I'm in the USA and ordered some, but its gonna be a week or so before it arrives :) Anyone who has a TTR knows the stainless steel headers discolor instantly.
