Thanks Victor for such a helpful video for travel filming. I had recently taken my Sony A7iv with a 24-105 lens, GoPro Hero 11, and iPhone 12pro max on a trip to Switzerland and a tour of Patagonia and South America. I like your tip about taking some time to enjoy the moment. I am 67 years old and my wife and I are checking off bucket list destinations. We are off to Indonesia and Bali in September. I do struggle with juggling so much gear while traveling that I miss much of the experience which I seem to relive when back home on the computer in Final Cut Pro. Your tutorials have helped me a lot. I will try to enjoy Bali in September and not worry so much about always getting the shot.

Be careful with auto white balance since it can cause weird color shifts between cuts or even during one shot and can cause footage to not match up right. Having it set to daylight will probably be fine for most outdoor scenes, and even for indoor scenes if you're ok with them having a warm look

Thanks a lot for all your tips! You're an incredibly talented filmmaker. I wanted to ask you something, though. Yours are some of the very few videos I've seen shot with Sony cameras (and specifically the FX30 and A7) that don't scream "DIGITAL". I don't know why people are not talking about this more, because it's very obvious to me that no matter how good the image quality is on these cameras and how many times people (over)use the word "cinematic", 90% of the videos I watch featuring the last batch of Sony hybrid and cinema cams don't look like film, at least to me. It's not that they look "cheap" by any means. As I said, the image quality, colors and sharpness are super professional looking but, for lack of a better expression, the look "too real" and don't trigger the feeling of "this is a movie" that I get with other cameras. And I'm talking about cameras because I know there's a ton of different elements that contribute in making something feel like a movie, but in this particular case, you rely a lot on natural light and "simple" techniques and it still feels different from other videos I've seen shot with the FX30 the A7 and similar where even using pro lighting, it looks more like a commercial or a corporate video, but never like an actual film. What would you say it's that key element that makes your videos look different?
@VictorLaforteza11 ай бұрын
Thanks! I know what you mean about that digital feel. I think a huge part of it is exposure and making sure you're softening up the highlights and shadows in post so it uses the full dynamic range! I've shown my entire workflow in terms of filming and editing and I'm not quite sure what else I'm doing different! could be the grading!

Great video man! But look: The overheating on the A7 iv is kinda like a myth to me. I'm a BMX filmmaker and I filmed the last month's under very hot temperatures for hour's. The a7 iv did not overheat a single time since I got it and I film about 80% of the time in 4k 60p 10bit... (I though try to keep the flip screen flipped out all the time so the heat can spread very nicely)
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
I think we got good a good batch tbh. I was shooting some scenes on a tripod and it was under the sun in Thailand and it was super HOT to touch that I had to cool it down but I didn't see the high temp sign at all. Maybe it was there for 10-15 mins but yeah... a bunch of people report that it overheats quick but some like ours are almost like tanks!

Two things: The A7IV has a low overheat threshold setting. Remove it. Tip 2. My A7IV also remains cooler if I flip out the screen out. As that is where the main heat sink is for that camera. So you are correct!

My issue with this is that my journey stops being about travelling and begins to feel like just another chapter of work. There is a phrase I heard recently - to make your video look more authentic you have to make it a lot less authentic in the moment. You have to stop, find a frame, set it up, ask your friend to stay there, run back and forth a bunch of times and so on. Your chill walk through a jungle becomes a sweaty tiring mess. Your heavenly swim by the waterfall becomes a chore as you get out of the water for 12th time to redo a shot. Your movies are awesome and they look great but I just can't stop thinking about the BTS of them so these are few of my words for anyone's watching.
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
Totally get it... But the whole video is about shooting intentionally and not having to shoot so many times to get the perfect shot. There’s a segment here where I talk about letting go of the perfect shot and learning to accept the first time is good enough or just completely skip it.

I think I have the hardest time with lighting. Even when I film when light seems adequate, I end up with Pixelization, especially visible in the dark areas and it drives me nuts. I shoot in 1080p and 2160. I'm not a professional so maybe my understanding of some settings aren't perfect, but I saved 3 settings based off tutorials for indoors, outdoors and dynamic scenes. I've tried manual mode and automatic and I get the same issues. It's especially worse when I zoom in some. I would have thought that filming at higher resolutions would enable me to zoom in without losing too much of the quality and yet, I don't see an improvement over my old camera (Nikon D3500). I'm using the Nikon Z30. I can't just be that the camera is just bad, right?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
most likely will depend on the sensor of the camera! I haven't used any Nikon cameras but the newer ones are probably just as good as any other brands in the same price point. If someone else have done it with the z30, you'll probably need tweak some settings!

@VictorLaforteza I'll look again, but most tutorials on this canera, which was designed for vlogging, are about the photography portion and less about the video filming part. If you were to think of one setting to tweak or ensure it is not too low or high, which one would you think needs adjustment?

Hey victor, love the vids man thanks for sharing! Quick queston, do you use an ND fliter for those day time shots?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
I usually do! an ND 16 is enough for me but if you like convenience a quality VND would work. This trip I actually forgot my ND so I had to compensate by using the lower extended ISO for SLOG3

to me what makes something feel like a movie scene is the emotion, not the cinematography. You achieve good cinematography, but in film, a story, with a character, and emotion is necessary
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
I completely agree! This was more like to get that high quality video but to immerse the video with more story character and emotional journey is the true "cinema"!!

Going to Japan and the Philippines in August. I'm hoping to get to at least half of your level of videography in 2 months lol. Wish me luck! Quick question, do you edit while you travel or do you do it all at home? If so, what computer do you bring with you on your travels?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
Japan and Philippines are going to be awesome!!! Excited for you. Love the white sand and turquoise waters in PH. I edit my videos at home. I bring my 16" macbook pro m1 pro just in case I need to do some client work but for these youtube videos, I usually try and do them at home!

@@VictorLaforteza Thanks! I'm bringing a tinier version of your rig: ZV-E10, E 11mm f1.8, and my Crane M2S. Seeing your wide angle shots made me feel good about my 11mm purchase lol. It really does showcase the setting nicely. Loved the 7/11 static low light shot. Will be doing a lot of that in Tokyo and Manila. Last question, what mic were you using during your vlog shots? sounds really nice even on the street.
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
@@JohnMichael-gd2lh YES!! wide angles are so nice. I used a DJI mic! you can see it attached on my camera sling bag strap! Still trying to make it the best I can with audio so this was like one of my first few times pulling off something decent

Great video! What is the opening song? Is it on spotify? Really diggin it.

Yeah I think so! We licensed through musicbed and the song is Letting You Go by De Lune. They're an amazing duo!

Very cool! What parts of this could only have been done on a Sony mirrorless versus ProRes on iPhone pro and dehancer?

Can we use Sony alpha a7rv for commercial movie making purpose? How would be the final output on big screen?

of course! it's a beast of a camera. You can output the 8k footage no problem with it

Great job Victor! and thanks for sharing. Maybe something that can be also considered is sound. Especially if it will be used as a meaningful component of the film. Having a small camera mic or sound recorder would make a great difference.

What VND filter do you currently use? Your last video about NDs was the haida 2 in 1. Is that still your go to? also would that be enough on a sunny day. Thank you

Yup! still my go to :) It's definitely enough for a sunny day!

I like the idea. Thanks for sharing! For me, nothing about a zoom lens is "super light weight," and taking a gimbal with you while traveling sounds annoying and heavy. For traveling, I take my Sony A7iii with the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G lens. I also take a Godox TT350s smaller flash for portraits. That's an actual lightweight setup. When I do dolly in movement shots for video, I just do it handheld and stabilize it in Resolve later. Looks great. Having just one lens means I can throw the camera in and out of my backpack and I have to think a bit on how I want to frame shots. It keeps things simple. I also use my iPhone 13 Mini a ton! The stabilization is better than the Sony A7iii, and after doing a video I can easily share it with the people I'm traveling with. I lightly edit the photos/videos and it looks great. Next time I travel I'm leaving the camera at home and I'm going to challenge myself to only use the iPhone.
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
Yeah depends on what’s tolerable with your setup! I looooove lightweight setups! kinda missing the 24mm. I do agree, I think at one point I’m gonna try just bringing my phone and a power bank! That’s gonna be more worry free travel and easier to capture photos with it! Snap and go kinda thing

Great job Victor! How to get so nice and soft image even in 4k?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
I think diffraction played a big part of it looking softer. The A7IV 4k is super sharp and being on f/8-f/22 introduce diffraction which makes the lens softer. Not a good thing for photography but it seems like it works pretty good with video! Balancing out the super sharp 4k
@gutandrew Жыл бұрын
@@VictorLaforteza thanks! I thought that faster lenses have move soft image. If I open the aperture I will get more light and more soft image but I see it's completely opposite.
@gutandrew Жыл бұрын
@@VictorLaforteza what aperture was at @3:09?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
@@gutandrew Well both are correct! at wide open it would be still sharp on the subject but everything else would be pleasingly soft vs diffraction, it makes everything soft that sometimes it ruins some shots! @3:09 talking head is at f/3.5 and then shot before that is f/16

Hi Victor, great work as always! Which mic do you use to record audio from the surroundings?
@VictorLaforteza Жыл бұрын
This is something I'm actually working on! I just use the in camera audio. I feel like I'd just add them in post if things didn't work out with the built in mic but maybe a shotgun mic would be great. It just makes the camera a bit more bulky.
