Tired of background noise? Drape a thick blanket over yourself and the mic while recording. You will LOOK stupid, but nobody is going to _SEE_ you on a audio recording, and it is the closest thing to having a "Dead room" (no echo from walls, background noise, etc). Also make sure you are on carpet or a rug, the floor can really reflect your voice as well. Hope this helps everyone. - Kevin

Jacob Brown Yes, that will help also. Maybe not as well as shag carpet though. We need to create a world of "Surface area". A bedsheet is flat, a shag carpet has a million fibers more sticking out. That creates more surface area for the sound to get "Lost in". Similar to the blanket. But better than a hard srfaced chair, good call.

By the way, it doesn't necessarily get rid of the background noise, but it will make a huge difference on the echo

ProjectJamesify if I could suggest another tip to make your audio sound even more professional...get a microphone that’s better than the Blue Yeti! No honestly Blue Yeti are USB which are horrible, so invest in an XLR mic then you’d have tip top audio.

Anyone watching in 2017, Noise Remover has been removed (heh heh) and was replaced with Noise Reduction. I've personally found it easier to just select unwanted noise>generate>silence in lieu of the new Noise Reduction feature. Great video, mate.

In general, Bass Boosting and Treble boosting is decent, but the defaults are WAY over the top.You should never do it over 6 db generally unless something went really wrong with the recording. Doing it to 9 db like here is overkill and pretty much makes it noticeable that you're modifying your voice - it gives the slight automoton-like ring to it in the background. The other contributing component is when you treble boost that much, you get all those spikes that you have to hard-limiter. Hard-limiters distort audio quality. So if you can avoid creating huge spikes with treble boosting, you can probably avoid using the hard limiter altogether. These steps are good, I would just say play around with lesser emphasis on the bass/treble-boosting 'till it sounds better.

Definitely 'like' for this tutorial! Just one note: I wouldn't be so enthusiastic about "bass boost" - your voice become *not deep*, but like you're speaking from a barrel. It's different thing! "Natural" deep voice is not just "big bass", but a whole tembre and "harmonized" with other tones. It's a big theory!

***** I have the same mic but if I keep a distance away and turn up the gain the background noise overpowers the voice. I have eliminated some of it by placing the Yeti on a mouse mat, but you can still hear my computer fan, keyboard and mouse. When removing the background noise the audio seems to sound quite tinny. I do have a pop filter attached to the mic and it does remove the popping sounds effectively. The main question is, do you think my recording environment is reducing quality? I record in a small room with rough surfaced walls, maybe if I drape a blanket etc. over the opposite wall and the door then some of the horrible echos should be removed? (I don't want to invest in acoustic foam if it doesn't work for my situation)

Keep about 30cm away from mic. NOISE REMOVAL: Wait approx 5 secs before starting recording, and 3 secs after recording. This allows you to get rid of background noise: Highlight empty space. Effect > Noise Removal > Get Noise Profile Select entire track. Effect > Repeat Noise Removal COMPRESSOR: Effect > Compressor Put threshold at about -18. BASS BOOST: Effects > Equalization Select curve: Bass Boost TREBLE BOOST: Effects > Equalization Select curve: Treble Boost HARD LIMITER: Makes sound come through at a level volume. Effect > Hard Limiter dB limit: between -2 and -5; tweak to preference using preview. NORMALIZE: Effect > Normalize > OK Makes voice louder. Did this for my college work, so I thought I may as well comment it as well.

Thanks! I've been using Audacity for a while, but I hadn't used all of the steps in your list. Much improved, and my recording was done with a pretty low-rent condenser shotgun mike in my office with ventilation noise and ambient noise through the wall and a vent from a staff lounge next door. I'm pretty happy with the results.

I have been using this for a few years now. I wanted to look for improvements. The compress and hardlimiter were two items I never use. Thanks for this information. Will try and test out.

There is a cool recorded speech texturing process that has been around for, and been improved upon since the 1960's. Relatively few know it or understand it. After more decades than I care to admit, I finally figured it out on my own. I also learned that it is such a well-kept secret, I'd also better keep it secret or I might get a visit from a nasty hit-man.

Ok i have a few critical remarks to this tutorial. 1.) You have clipped peaks which means your audio material crushes against the upper boundaries of the possible dynamic range. Which causes distortion and clipped peaks are not really pleasant to listen to. Activate "Show clipping"" in your Options (can be found at the "View" tab) and you see what i mean (It was clearly audible in this demonstration). When you boost your audio, keep that in mind. When you record digital you can easily afford to record at low volumes and then boost the sound and add compressor to get it right without having it crushing against the maximum decibel boundaries. It would be different if you would record analog and wanna keep the audio above the noisefloor of the tape. 2.) Compressor and Limiter should be used in a moderate manner. Otherwise you create an ear-exhausting "pumping" effect where you have hardly any transients (quiet parts) and everything that is quiet gets boosted up. It has a very negative effect on the human ear. 3.) Noise reduction is not always needed and should really only be used if the material is WAY too noisy. Use it in moderation and just slightly because every noise reduction has flaws and it's never really possible without a loss in audio fidelity. You also get some nasty artifacts in the audio which sounds a lot like MP3 compression artifacts.

KRAFTWERK2K6 ...what would be the best post processing effects? As a woman, just normalize? Or once audio is recorded, set a limter and then normalize? Also what settings should I use? My limiter has a -3db setting and normalize -1db. Thanks in advance.

Nice, but didn't like the "hard limit" because it IS clipping but levelled on -1dB. As a second, compression is a plague in audio. Everyone uses it like glutamate to "power up" everything. Best idea in workflow was noise reduction from the beginning, because some "experts" would have compressed that noise (and treble) too.

Audacity Manual says we should use Normalize before equalization if we amplify a frequency specially the lower ones, like I think it does when we use Bass Booster. source: manual.audacityteam.org/man/equalization.html (in Draw Curves entry, inside the yellow box) It also tell us to use Normalize to DC offset removal right after recording or importing a file. source: manual.audacityteam.org/man/normalize.html (botton of the page, last yellow box, Tips)
