I must say... This project is AWESOME! I was able to use these basic instructions, with some variations, and create an entire science fair project about it :) thanks for the awesomeness Kipkay!

I'm not too sure, but I would think that to make it visibly shake and be loud, you would use a bigger coil, and bring it closer to the neodymium magnet, which would push the plate away with a stronger force. Once again, make sure it doesn't go backwards. You are right though, there is a line between loudness and clarity. Also, in the video it looked like he had to turn up his volume a ways before he got the loudness out of it. That's just an observation though.

Its cheap at radio shack. Depending on where you live, they might not have any at some stores. You need to find a BIG radio shack... They carry lots of stuff. The neodymium magnets are their too.

the weigh of the plate and the 2 business cards suspention are making that dragin noise with the plate vibrations. Works better with 3 or 4 cards.

you should check hox much ohms your coil produces, and it should be matching the one on your usual speakers. For exemple, I use my Hi-fi system pluged in auxiliary mode for my PC. and the speakers are 6 ohms. Hope I helped. bb

no you don't HAVE to use neodynium magnets but neodynium has vry has magnetic properties in relation to its size so its perfect for speakers and hard drives (where its used for the read/write actuator) *bows in appreciation :P*

@nikHILO2 In theory, any magnet will do, but keep in mind that a small power magnet will result in lower volume for the same energy used, compared to a neodymium magnet.

Hey you really don't need to use a neodymium magnet. I just got it working with the ceramic magnets. It just started smoking. I smell the enamel right now! Just keep it on low volume.

Hmmm when they say 7ohms, does it include the extending wires or just the coil?? The coil on its own is 3 ohms and somehow the jack and the line is another 3 equaling 6 ohms.

No it isn't. In this application, the wire having an enamel is important because of the coil. If it was standard non-enamel wire, the coil wouldn't function because it would short out.
