I have an extensive amount of time using Dynabrade finishing tools when I worked for a company where we built a lot of agitators, hoppers, frames, etc from stainless steel for pharmaceutical and food manufacturing. I bought a Dynabrade Dynafile II of my own about 9 years ago. It was $530 at the time, plus a few hundred $ more for a few different contact wheels. It was a great investment for the kind of work I have done and what I do on my own now. They do use a lot of air!

It’s a super high quality tool! I wish I could use it off site but it gulps way too much air to use a pancake compressor! In the shop it’s unmatched!

Awesome! Yeah I really love those round corner flap discs, but these band files definitely help for those hard to reach places

@@MakeEverything unfortunately the corners are too tight for those flap discs. I have those as well but these corners are where 3 sides meet.

I love these. In addition to using it on my metal projects, they're fantastic for grinding the callouses off my feet. You just have to take it easy so you don't draw blood.

I used to work for a machine shop and that is where I was first introduced to one of these machines, and I have loved them ever since, I have two of them myself, the first on that I purchased is an attachment that goes on an angle grinder and the second is a pneumatic version. Like you said they are excellent at getting in tight and hard to reach areas. Great video.

I bought the HF and other than the switch breaking off the 3rd time I used it (right after the return policy ended of course) it has been fantastic. I picked up some purple 3M Cubitron belts and they last FOREVER.

I have the Banks bandfile from harbor freight and I purchased an 8mm handle for the side holes on the banks. It's big and heavy and the left/right side holes help alot for control. Thanks for the video. Nice job.

Excellent tutorial on band filers. The cost difference between the Dynafiler vs an air driven die grinder using carbide bits for weld cleanup is huge. An Ingersoll Rand air powered die grinder that weighs one pound costs about sixty bucks Canadian.

You were right the first time - 24 is 33% more than 18. =p I’ve been looking at picking up the M12 bandfile. Kind of pricey. Right now I just have the wen and have still found it quite useful.

I have a dynabrade electric, basically works off a 4-1/2” grinder motor and body. Came in a kit with a few attachments, 1/8-1/4” and 1/2” plus one for pipe with 1/4” belt. All 18”. The pipe arm works great for steel or aluminum hand rail

Learned that dust collection is a feature so like the WEN a lot - will be using for automotive fiberglass bumper/ground effects repair where dust collection is huge. (will see if 3rd parties make dust collectors too) RE: WEN: the head can articulate but not much. Some will do 90 degrees which could be essential.

I finish custom stainless rails in a busy shop, the Dynafile is by far my favorite tool. Throw a Trizac belt on it and life is a dream.

Have an astro pneumatic that was under $100 I've been using for years and have been happy with. Had an M12 cutoff tool I didn't use much so I bought a HF bandfile, split it in half and franken-tooled it onto the M12 handle. Now I have a battery powered one for field work. Paul Brodie has some really nice ones he made from scratch or from online for grinders that are really nice looking tools. I think he has a KZbin video sharing them.

I can see these being handy when precision and quality of how things will look when you are done one a project is wanting to be achieved. Like cleaning up some welds to be painted. Cool. I wonder if one of these small belt sanders couldn't be used to safely and more quickly do a "port and polish" job for a car's air intake. Or just sanding down some sharp metal burrs your car may have on the chassis. One that may cut ya every time you change the front passenger tie. Same with tractors and lawn mowers. Thanks.

I have the Ryobi... picked up a year back for something like $50 on sale. It actually works great and since I already had batteries from another tool, bought the tool alone to save even more. Combined with a small 1.5 Ah battery, it is super light and easy to swing around. It may not last forever, being mostly plastic, but who cares at the price-point. They are nice sanders to have on-hand for those rare times you need them.

I have a milwaukee m12 bandfile. I love it. its powerfull and small. The head is 360 degrees adjustable.

Makita have a 18V bandfile now too. It also have some different wheels and a dust port. It looks to be way more powerful thwn the Ryobi which I have and sometimes it lacks power to sand down wood fast enough to be able to shape it.

I’m Debating getting the makita power cord one … there’s a deal locally for very low price. I have a 100mm belt sander, 2 18v orbitals, and a 1/4 and 1/3 18v finish sander. Then 4, 5 and 7 inch grinders in 18/36v. I’m just wondering how useful the power file would be? What are common jobs you use it on?

You can get rounded flap discs for sanding inside corners, but you can't always get a grinder in to clean up the welds.

Seems like that harbor freight one is literally their angle grinder, just with a bandsaw head. Seems like one of the companies should just sell bandsaw attachments for their angle grinders. That’d save me some money at least.

Does the surface conditioning belt produce similar results to a very fine (e.g. 1000 grit) abrasive belt, or are there significant differences?

I would say the SC Belt is more coarse than a 1000 grit.

Are there any battery powered versions that will accept the Dynabrade arms? The different arms are what make the tool completely universal for fine finishing. The flat wheel arms that come with all of the Harbor freight and other brands are not good for stainless polishing. The nearest thing I’ve found is my older Milwaukee corded electric band file. The Dynabrade arms do bolt up to that but the trigger is terrible and the rpm speed is half what the Dynafile puts out. Just curious if you have seen any battery options that will bolt up.

I’ve been in the stainless tank/piping industry for 20+ years. The Dynabrade is the essential tool. It’s crazy with as big of an industry it is that no one is really trying to provide specific tools for it except for Dynabrade.

I got the WEN one a few years ago after trying and dyna at work. Sadly they didn't take care of their tools and the dyna belt would pop off and not run smooth so it didn't perform amazing and I actually liked my cheap WEN model at home better

A dremel or die grinder could do all that. That being said i still like the band file and own one. Cleaning up truck frames to rust proof it has been nice. Ots a noche tool you find uses for quite alot of

24"/18" = 1.333, so 1/3 more was correct for length. 1/4 ÷ 1/2 = 50% so 0.5 x 1.33 = 66% of the surface area for 1/4" x 24" belt. Not that important since it's really about matching the tool to the work.
