3 things to check when your cigarette lighter socket stops working (car power outlet fix)

If your car power socket is not working, 9 times out of 10 it is because of a blown fuse, but before you pull out your owners manual and start looking up fuse locations, you should check 2 simple things!

My manual shows both at the same fuse however only one of the outlets work and the other one doesn’t

I had a paperclip stuck in my power socket for like 5 years and then one day I noticed it. It was stuck pretty good, but after a couple of minutes I got the paperclip out and voilà- it was back in action.

My cigarette lighter stopped working and yes the fuse associated with it was blown and when I replaced it it started working again but the illumination light around it has a separate fuse that was not blown but the light stopped working at the same time as the cigarette lighter.

You have a Mustang like mine! I have a 2005 Mustang 4.0L. The cigarette lighter on the dash keeps blowing fuses as soon as I plug anything into it, so I quit using it years ago. Now the accessory power outlet in the center console quit working too after using it for years. :(

Mine too and paying the hourly rate for a mechanic seems exorbitant. It would seem a tech could diagnose and fix such a thing in minutes, not hours.

I just bought my first car used from a dealer and the cigarette lighter works, but the car charger won't work. I've tried two different car chargers. Does that mean it's not a fuse issue and is probably to do with the dirt/rust inside?

Yes, each outlet socket has its own fuse. (You plug your device in the second socket to confirm the device itself works)

What if… the outlet is working… the charger working… and the usb cord is working… but when you plug it into the cigarette charging port… the light turns off…. Power stops going through the cig charger

I'm wondering the same thing. (I'm using my husband's KZbin ) it blew from a penny. It has a 20 yellow so I replaced it. It worked. It happen again tried to change it. Nothing. Then read it needs A blue 15 so the one before was wrong 🤦‍♀️ . No power turns red although many cords I tried that work into cigarette lighter. What do u recommend, I miss my music!! And have been on a ever lasting hunt help!!

sounds like theres a short inside of the charger block. assuming that's what you are talking about when you say "it" cuts off as soon as you plug "it" in. sounds like an over-current protection mechanism is being tripped. short circuits will try to draw infinite amperage until the wires melt so protect-circuits are in everything. easiest way to troubleshoot is to start replacing components 1 at a time until it works. easiest and cheapest first, everything in between the battery and the phone. its almost always something easy, as the video alludes to

If I had a windshield replacement that used to have an antenna in it (I have a 96 Lincoln Town car )will that affect my cigarette lighter that doesn't work and my radio that don't shut off. ???? It would be easy if it was just a fuse I guess but nothing is that easy never good luck

Two devices make a faulty connection and there is power. Push it to one side and it connects let go and it's off

Try using a different charger. Normally a phone shouldn't pull that many amps

My kia sedona has a regular cigarette lighter and 12 volt charging port on front that work. There is a rear 12 volt charging port in the very back of the car that does not work. The fuse is good. Now what?

Technically no, you shouldn't put a fuse of a higher rating in the circuit.

The lighter socket have power. But not heating in new cars. The socket have power, everything is working from it. Except not heating up the lighter. I tried different cars, different cigarette lighters.
