Thanks for the video. Was dreading doing mine and put it off for quite a while. You made it clear and simple. For anyone wondering about the cost. My chimney stack is 3 feet by 2 1/2 feet. The angle of my roof made the short side 5' 9" and the tall side 7'. Four sheets of Hardie board, five boards of Hardie trim (3/4" x 5 1/2" x 12'), large container of screws, gallon of paint, and 10 tubes of caulk. Total cost was just under $500. My wife had gotten estimates from $1000 to $1500. It took 2 days to complete but you can see how much money you saved me. Thanks again.

Your chimney needs a saddle on the back side to divert water. Also you should install house wrap on the frame underneath the siding.
@rodcarnochan84529 ай бұрын
No saddle needed.
@brianmacconnell12498 жыл бұрын
Great work. Just a thought (and I'm not a pro so take with a grain of salt), you might want to install an angled diverter between the peak of the roof and the chimney stack. The lack of one is most likely why the wood was so soft in that back corner. Good luck. Great videos very professional.
@MakeItNowchannel8 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a great idea. Just get rid of most of the running water before it even touches the stack. I'll have to pop one of those up there. Thanks!
@linctexpilot83376 жыл бұрын
You need a water diverter on the top side. A heavy rain will cause water to pool there and it'll start leaking and rotting the wood again.
@John-sg1nn4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I could not help but notice some issues. Your siding should have 2 inches of clearance from roof surface to prevent a wicking effect and as others have noted, chimney chase (stack) greater than 30 inches wide should have a cricket (saddle) installed to divert water away. While you had the chimney cap off, you should have also installed a spark arrestor screen, to prevent embers from coming out of your flue. Recommend budgeting for new siding and cricket (saddle) as you will have to replace siding again in the near future.

I’m a roofer and you needed to put new flashings in before you built it back up again which of course you would have had to take out some shingles and that way you wouldn’t have needed to put that ugly tar in there therefore the chimney stack would have looked exactly correct like it did when it was first install .😊👍
@corujariousa6 жыл бұрын
No metal flashing needed/recommended around the base of the chimney chase?
@_boringk67784 жыл бұрын
It's already there, at 3:18 he said he checked the flashing and it was good. You can see the existing flashing at 1:20.

Great Job with the New Build. My roof is too high for me to get up there, plus i would have needed a roof ladder to get to my chimney stack for safety and ours is made of bricks not like yours, but me personally i prefer yours. TC, Barry (ENG)

While I am generally a fan of screws rather than nails, it is my understanding that code, at least in my area is nails for siding and screws are not code. It's probably the same there and that is why you had a ton of nails to remove.

Quick question: as someone who is about to resolve the same issue, would it be easier to just completely remove the stack and just brace the pipe to not have the issue again? I could see this unfortunately being a reoccurring problem and am wondering the best long term fix for our wood stove. Thanks for putting the video together!
@Ang.0910 Жыл бұрын
I’m guessing His chimney looks like it’s for a prefab fireplace from the 70’s or a pellet stove. Not a wood burning stove/insert since it would get too hot near combustible materials. I have the same chimney stack that I have to replace so I can have a wood stove. Unless he has an insulated chimney pipe with 2” clearance but it didn’t look like it. Wood burning stoves doesn’t have a wood surrounding chimney. They have masonry or exposed pipe.
@moname70174 жыл бұрын
Didn't you extend the chimney pipe to connect to the flue? You can get sparks up there and a fire will start in your chimney wrap. Also, I didn't see you use heat/water safe materials. You know wood burns and you made your surround with bare wood.
@dongking62455 жыл бұрын
The water was coming in from the back side where the water runs down into it from the roofs runoff ! That henrys will not withold water for long it needs to be diverted ran around and down off the roof around your fireplace your going to have the same problems

Well done ! Great pics and easy to follow. Mine is just like yours and shot, but how badly can I screw it up ? Looks like a great DIY project and my estimates have been $700+ How and where did you secure the bottom 2x4's to the roof ? Just nailed them straight into the roof decking ?
@MakeItNowchannel7 жыл бұрын
Hi Don. Yeah, the 2x4's were cut to the angle of the roof, stood up vertically, and then just toe-nailed down into the roof decking. It seems a little wobbly when they stand alone, but once all 4 are attached with the siding, its incredibly strong. Hope that helps.
@Brandon-no3vc Жыл бұрын
How far away do you have to keep the wood
@larrycrookshanks90913 жыл бұрын
You should have completely redone the perimeter roof flashing first . Then realize that T-111 will wick water from the bottom up. Install should have been 1" up from shingles and painted backside and all edges three coats.

question. Being from another culture, I Wonder what the purpose having such a big box build around your chimney stack. Engineering - what hold the box fixed to the roof, it seems to move somewhat when you aply presure to it? Same for the stack/pipe?
@MakeItNowchannel8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not a contractor so I don't know the exact reason for such a large box. Probably to have the pipe raise above the roof by a certain height. The 2x4 frame is nailed down to the roof. Standing alone, they do move around a little bit, but once I screwed the siding on, it stiffens it right up. It is super solid right now.

@stevenfrench42444 жыл бұрын
Hi Muhammad , i have just done mine on a roof with a step pitch.... i wore shoes with the sole made of a soft rubber compound..... worked very well...good luck with your DIY job mate..
@bassboye89594 жыл бұрын
Depends on the pitch of your roof. A lot of skilled roofers wear thick soled tennis/deck type shoes. Anything above 7 12 pitch, find a good roofer with good carpentry skills. stainless steel caps are better and look more attractive than that crappy galvanised that rots. No projects worth permant injury. Roofs are NOT for the sqimish novice. Mine are 12 12 steep. Used to get up there. I'm 59 now LMAO. Check references on your service people licence date & insurance. People will tell you anything to get the job. Don't pay them until it's done. And watch them. Tell them what you'd like, must be mutual respect. Best wishes. Been screwed several times by not doing enuff research on best methods

It will never pass inspection and if you burn your house down, your insurance won't cover the repairs or replacement. They will deny your claim. What you basically did was make a wood vent for your fireplace.
