One can learn Irish history from the songs....songs about the flight of the earls, the 1798 United Irishmen revolution, the "famine", and the 1916 Easter Rebellion.

My Grandfather used to play this song on his fiddlle and I used to dance between his knees as two year old. It always touches my soul and lifts my spirits like fairies on the wind.

This song has just made my day! Apart altogether from fond memories of Baile na nGall, Teach an Cheoil, Seamus O' Colliu, Mairead Breathnach(where I stayed and learned my Gaelic) Makem and Clancy and all the goings on in Mooney's Pub! etc etc. In the past few days I was trying to find a tune which could form part of a set with Brian Finnigan's beautiful tune 'FLY' And I just found it. Slow down Little Beggarman to about 85% speed and you have a matched the tempo. Both tunes are already matched in the same key of D and the same delightful rhythm. Go raibh maith agat VITO. Ta an Ghaeilge agam foil. Seamus

Sounds like the tune is derived from the hornpipe "Gilderoy".

But even more like the hornpipe "The Redhaired Boy" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4PKaappmaejpMk). Many hornpipes are similar to one another, Many of them are tunes for Irish songs....like "Mick McGuire".
