I've consistently seen how you/makenoise use Curtis' text, and the theories of microsound to create and educate, which is amazing. I must say that after going over the actual text myself, I strongly disliked it, because of its lack of actual, LISTENABLE examples and real world connections. The education you guys are doing really fills a big gap in synthesized based music. MEGA KUDOS... It would be amazing to see you in the future discus / create sound objects described by Curtis like Glissons, pulsars, trainlets, etc. You guys rock, cheers =)

Hey thanks for watching! For a more broad look at music with Roads' perspective check out his "Composing Electronic Music: A New Aesthetic" which branches out a lot and includes many sound examples from other composers. "Listenable" is still subjective, of course, it's mostly in the "academic electronic music" realm. But there's some great stuff to learn and hear in there, in my opinion. For a look at glissons, pulsars etc. in our system, check out the video "Microsound Workshop" here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4K4o4aebtytqZI

Okay, so now we need a Star Trek episode where the chief engineer breathlessly exclaims “That’s it! We just need to destabilize the repetitions of the mesopolyrhythm!” and that turns out to be what saves the ship. I am also willing to accept that the navigation and/or engineering consoles are stacked Shared System/TMMSen, but only if you all in Asheville get a really good royalty clause in the contract.

Thanks for another really interesting and engaging snapshot. Just wondering if you think of meso-polyrhythms as the same as the same as isorhythms?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
First of all, i'd note that meso-polyrythm is just a term i made up for this video and it's possible, even likely, that there is already an existing term for it. That said, in response to your question I would say maybe not, because I understand isorhythm to refer to a repeated rhythmic pattern among note events, and as I'm using it here, the "meso-rhythm" is affecting something other than individual note events and on a time scale longer than single note events. The repetition of isorhythmic patterns of a length different from the meter of the piece, could have some relation to what i called "meso-polyrhythm" in terms of differing/overlapping phrase lengths, but I would also consider my "meso-rhythm" to be broader, as it could be applied to any meso-scale change such as periodic transposition, timbral shifts, shifting clock divisions, turning echoes on and off, etc. Hopefully that answers the question?

Super quick thing: try to hang some thick fabric in the rooms corners. Sometimes your voice struggles to stay above the rooms ambient reverberation. It might be your style though, so... don't mind me. Just my 2 cents.
