Thanks Austin ! In 1990 I went to Grove School of Music and studied Music Production and Engineering. I have worked with many top writers in Nashville and Los Angeles but never did I have anyone who tells it like it is. Most people who find there sound and have success would not share your knowledge. Thank you and keep it up.

You should've discussed how far the pop filter should be from the mic and the pros and cons of it being closer or farther away from the mic. I'm really liking your videos dude... I'm more of a rock/blues guy, but modern pop music and production intrigues me. You've definitely helped me understand some of the ear candy I hear on the radio and you explain it in a concise, easy to comprehend manner.

I'm starting to experiment with recording vocals without headphones, because I really hate having to have them on, even with one ear off, or both ears half off. It's not very clean, but it seems to work fine. Sade used to track vocals that way :) Maybe not too modern, but the benefits are quite nice for the performer, which increases the performance, which I prefer over processing.

Great video but I was wondering a couple of things if you don't mind. Firstly, is it possible to get great vocals without a large diaphragm condenser microphone? I use a small diaphragm condenser mic and my recordings haven't been the best. I've come to think that any professional mixer can make a vocal sound really good no matter what mic is used but I wanted to get your input on this. I know there are a lot of factors that play into this but about mixing, I record dry and use compression, eq, reverb with short decay, de esser, etc etc. After doing all of these things, my vocals still don't sound very professional. Pitch and timing is fine but they sound very dry and not full and warm. Is there any advice you can give me? I mix in Adobe Audition and have experimented with a lot of things and watched a lot of tutorials. I'd appreciate any advice you can give.

Hey this video is awesome. I do have a questions if you don’t mind sharing you opinion on it. When you are recording your vocals do you edit or mix before you start or do you just do a straight raw vocal and then mix after?
@GOTRAVlogs
@GOTRAVlogs 5 жыл бұрын
So if I use an audio interface straight to the mic, a RAW signal without any compression or FX should be at around -6 -8? or do you record with a compressor hitting those levels. sorry if it´s been mentioned) Great video! Very helpful! Keep it going!!!
@Writtenmirror
@Writtenmirror 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on your voice, mic, room noise and interface he says so in the video. -6 to -8 gives you the most headroom to work with.

I like to visualise - as you sing imagine gently pushing your voice through the mic from your diaphragm, and imagine the compression amount and frequency profile you're trying to achieve.

damn i didn't know that clipping within the DAW so long as it's not on the master buss was ok. i started worrying so much about that which i think we negatively affecting my recordings cuz i kept see the volume getting what i thought was too high and then would re adjust everything. so as long as i just don't clip while recording in and make sure the master buss isn't im all good hey?

I don't believe in eternal processing, a chain with 100 things applied. I don't believe in the magic mic either, or the incredible room. What COMES INTO the microphone is the true magic. If that is excellent, the rest will be a breeze to enhance and mix.
