Taper dowel pins if you can for future projects, that way if overtime the holes get wallowed out you can just ream them deeper, and it has a higher repeatability if you need to do alot of assembly/disassembly. Good video enjoying your gingery vids.

Very nice project, wish I could cast my own aluminium parts. One tip, we use tapered locating pins at work, the locating holes get reamed with special tapered reamers. Makes it much more accurate since you can jam the pins in there, and if it loosens you can just ream it a bit again.

Hey. Love the videos. Be careful sanding on your surface plate, believe it or not it doesn't take much to abrade the surface plate out of flat with the dust produced. Maybe consider using some float glass to protect the surface. Ask anyone that's had their surface plate lapped. They even recommend a dust cover when not in use to prevent damage they wear easier than you'd expect.

I love this series! Very cool! Can I ask why you used countersunk bolts with an angled bottom surface? It seems like another variable to deal with when trying to maintain flatness of the cold-rolled steel.
@Makercise5 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a way to counter bore the holes. The top of the fastener needs to be below the top of the ways so the carriage or spindle head has clearance.
@jimmyhawkins76963 жыл бұрын
Any more work on it lately?
@gfr20232 жыл бұрын
I don't understand this... if you put the cold rolled (not scraped not flat) steel over the bed (scraped flat)... how it could be your ways flat ?
@learningwithlyricsandsongs5 жыл бұрын
Hello. How are you going to level the surfaces of the cold rolled steel that you've bolted on? Are you going to scrape that too? I'm just wondering how you're going to make it all parallel, square and flat. It's all very interesting to watch. I can't wait to see how you make it accurate. I think that I'll look at your shaper build videos. I'm itching to see how you got around all of the problems. Best wishes.

Nice work Dude. So, are you a classically trained machinist, or self taught? I do want to tell you about Kant-Twist clamps( I may have not seen yours). They help out a ton when trying to keep parts lined up while tightening(very little shifting if any). Also, if the threads ever strip out of the aluminum/aluminium, steel thread inserts called helicoils are available with the proper drill and tap. They work incredibly well when using steel bolts in aluminum threads. Used them on high end parts that had to last against vibration and impact force. Have a good one.

It is much less accessible to cast iron at home. It would be a better material for the machine but more difficult to more by hand.

For the smaller holes, I think your drill press is set up too slow. I only recently started paying attention to feeds and speeds---it's magical. Also, WD-40 is what the guys at work use for lube when they're working with aluminum.
@Makercise5 жыл бұрын
Yep. I need to get into feeds and speed. I know I need more lower speed and more torque for 8mm and up. Maybe an intermediate stage.

I've watched a lot of these vids, mainly because i've had the gingery books for a few years now.. one thing i would like to point out, is i've seen a lot of inclusions, and air pockets in your castings, and would like to offer up a link to a youtube video that covers degassing aluminium. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qomqi3iNfdWle5I it should help reduce the air pockets in your castings.
@darkshadowsx59495 жыл бұрын
Someone sent him the castings he didn't cast them himself. 1:20 did you watch the beginning of the video?

I wonder how much of it is there because of lost foam process. Covering foam with plaster also might make harder for gases to escape.

Mr. Teeter, I am the original maker of those castings. You purchased them online(Feebay)from me. I also watched the video and noticed the comment was made that -"not all of the castings were there"-and I just want to make sure that got changed. You purchased those casting from a guy that lives in Tenn. Me. I put alot of hard work into making those castings for you and I deserve the proper "shout out" about them instead of cracking off that some was missing. If you are in reference to any duplicate items like handles- were included and you received them and I was paid. Now, what, 10 years later you decide to go public and bad mouth the maker of those castings. 90% of all of the alluminum used in those castings wasn't even scrap metal it was pure T-6160 bought by me from my local scrap yard and I can obtain the metallurgical papers to verify that, so I know how the castings even machine because I used/made the same when I built my Gingery lathe and other machines. I didn't get on here to start an argument or bad mouth anyone. Just a little thank you will do. The best thing to do if there was anything missing would be to tell the person instead of waiting 10 years and then go public making accusations like that. The hours I spent making those castings and this is what I get? Thanks! I will be watching how this turns out. I'll even do one better-what was missing and I will go out and cast them for you. How about that? I'll check these comments soon for your reply and you need a casting I'll cut it. Just don't go public and make statements like that about me and my handmade products. I'm not mad-surprised but not mad. Hear from you soon.
