I have used, quartz, stone flint, even a piece of broken glass.. BUT considering mtleatherman surge is always on my belt, I use it.the backside of my blade works well.

Can I offer you a tip , if in sea/marsh/wet environments. Coat your ferrocerium rod with Vaseline to deter corrosion.

Why? A very thin coat of Vaseline works well for corrosion protection, and can be easily removed with paper towel , which can then be used as tinder. In my experience there is no effectiveness loss as far as spark production🤔😂

@@tikkidaddy I agree with you completely. I carry a small tin of beeswax/linseed oil to protect my blades, ferro rods and leather. I'm sure Vaseline does a similar job.
