I bought a length of fero rod from a military surplus store but there was no hole in it. I used my drill press to add a hole. While drilling the sparks were very impressive with the amount of pressure applied. It taught me that the amount of pressure when striking is just as important as the sharpness of the striker and the angle of the strike. The fero rod is only part of the equation. I like a lanyard for better grip for my XL hands though I usually support the rod on the pile while striking.🇨🇦

I'm new to the whole ferro rod game. I have made many fires with flint and steel while camping primitive style, but I have recently started looking into other ways to start a fire. I appreciate your clear explanation and simple demonstration.

Glad it was helpful. I like using flint and steel as well, although, we have no flint in our area so I use quartz. Thanks for commenting

Reminded me of Crocodile Dundee. That's not a ferro rod.... THIS is a ferro rod. Excellent review, thank-you Mark. Will be upgrading my kit now. Glad to hear the fires have settled down near you.

My first thought when you showed the Ferro fire rod was I'd remove the paracord and clip a small carabiner to the shackle. That would make it hang shorter off the belt.

I recently upgraded from a metal match to one of these bigger rods and really am liking it so far. It’s big enough to let you get a good strong grip on it. Thanks for sharing Mark!

G'day Mark, yep there's certainly different grades alright, I'd go as far as to say those I have are all sightly different. Bottom line, for such a critical piece of kit, I'd suggest a coupla bucks more will pay you back many times over. Cheers Duke.

I agree Duke. Having bought and used cheap rods I have learned it pays to invest a few bucks more. Thanks for commenting

Ahh advertising! Reminds me of an ad I saw as a kid... "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?" lol Great point on length. Large diameter is great for the fire pit, thinner if on a hike/camp out.

I prefer to carry the small cheap Amazon ones,, they're much lighter, (I usually have 2 with me), if you try a few different ones till you get one that suits you, then buy several, , you're all set,,, just throw them away when they get worn down,, don't see the point of carrying excess weight,, Just my 2 cents,, 👍 (you could get 20, for the price of one of these, !! ) 😂

I like useing a broken pair of scissors for a striker. Works amazing you should give it a try next time you are at the dollar store pick up some scissors.

Thank you for this Video...today i noticed your sense of humor...greatly appreciated. And your immediate thought pattern spoken out loud...loved it all 🥰 So sorry about the deer flies, are they big like here in America our horse flies? My 50 pound dog always was on the receiving end of those beasts... I got bit in my toe by a horse fly. That was the last meal it had 😂

Do they ship from the USA? Or do they take awhile to get here.
@neonsamurai1348

Address is Chinese on their website, though they state it ships from amazon US in their FAQ, however it also says this on their products page "Free shipping within two business days as per arrangements for festivals and holidays from China government.". Personally I doubt it comes from amazon if ordered from their page.

The shackle is useless. Just wrap the rod with duct tape, like you did with the other one. An 8 inch rod length is ridiculous. How cumbersome!
