I watched through your cad for begginer stuff and after taking a look at the mechanism and how you made it, I used it as a benchmark to make a 3d mechanism, only when I get my printer will I be able to see if it worked, but it was a fun challenge, I gave mine a stand and a hand crank as well. It was fun.

You forgot to put a clearance in the drive wheel for the driven wheel to pass through. That is to say: you extruded too much. :-)

Maker's Muse If you use separate components instead of just separate bodies, when you do cuts, the extrude window has options for what components your effecting. On joins or new bodies, it's always to the active component. Generally components make life easier in Fusion, which I've learned the hard way this week. 😄

I like to do things myself then see how others do it. I have not used constraints in fusion yet. I divided it up like a pie and drew each circle and slot allowing for tolerance. I made the driven and drive gear at the same time. took longer but i think they turned out quite well. even added extra holes for design. I will consider learning to use constraints in the future. you made it look so easy.

Hi Angus! The bug bit me hard and I went through your entire cad for newbies playlist and learned a lot. But everything you've demonstrated is about creating single bodies. For example, in this video you just skipped to the assembled drawing after making the fancy part. How did you piece it together? How do you define constraints between bodies? Can you put together a video that goes over assembling different parts? Thanks!

I always start by creating names parameters for variables such as 'number of slots' or 'pin diameter' in this example. Then type in their names. I also create 'tolerance' parameters and then when typing in a size I can type in 'pinDiameter + tolerance' rather than fixed vales

W00dledude that makes sense! That is awesome! Can you create variables that are formula dependant? I could imagine it being helpful if you wanted say one thing to have a distance or angle that changes dependant on the value of another... Line two is 7/10 the value of line one... Angle b is 37 percent of c and both are offset from angle a... Basically any standard highschool equation you could enter on a graphing calculator...

@k2OS

Silly question, but aren't the slots just too deep? Better too deep than not deep enough, but.. you set the depth of the slots the same as the distance from the center of the drive wheel to the center of the pin, but.. the center of the pin will never make it that far into the slots since the center of the driving wheel is outside the edge of the driven wheel. Am I missing something? Great videos though. I just started using Fusion and have managed to do so many more things that would have taken me ages in OpenSCAD.. :)
@k2OS
@k2OS 7 жыл бұрын
I derived the way to get the proper depth for the slots.. found in your 'using constraints' video :D Draw a line that coincides with the center of the drive wheel and the driven wheel . One end point concident with the driven wheel and the other one conincident with the construction circle that goes through the center of the pin - use that line instead of the line that goes all the way to the center of the drive wheel to set the depth of the slot. Rotate everything to confirm. Tadaa..
@adamlahaie723
@adamlahaie723 7 жыл бұрын
I think you are right, it should have been the distance between the construction circle and the driven wheel circle, and not the center of the driving wheel.

One of the big things is I don't want anything on the cloud. The chinese have shown they will take whatever they want. Then there are those in any government that will slow your ideas to be stolen with no financial compensation for your creativity. I have thought about openscad, free cad and others. Any ideas? I love Maker's Muse and all, subscribe to his channel: but every time I hear him connecting himself to the Chinese, I cringe.

*Why so many views of your original video?* I get that it is a moving mechanical 3D printed item but how many people actually knew what a "Geneva Drive" was before watching the video? It seems weird that it would have that much interest and more than 5x the views than there are subscribers. I'm not knocking it and I may print one, but I am curious why it has over 777,499 views at this moment in just two days.

ElmerFuddGun that's happens a lot when the video gets front page listing on KZbin, common occurrence, relatively low sub count guys get HUGE, non proportional views when it hit the 'trending'/popular listing, it's good, gets more subs and interest.

For a start, you need to create a components first.... work from there and create components as you increase the parts to use. Sketch is under/within a components. This is a top down structure best practise suggested from Autodesk. This is the first mistake that most people including myself made....

angus, my constraints are totally not working. 3:03 you dimension the distance between the circles, but instead of the line changing it's length, the diameter of the circle is changing. 4:13 you make that line angle itself to the center of the big circle(sorry for the foggy words) but in my case the line just elongates and touches the circle.... pls help p.s. love your vids, im a subscriber
@sambeard9232

Hi bro at 4:13 i had the same problem. To fix it you need to select the line and not the actual point else the point joins onto the center
@jarisipilainen3875
@jarisipilainen3875 5 жыл бұрын
5:44 looks like length is now distance of these 2 circles 20mm and 4mm pin. why need that constrain then. so you made bobo. you made depth longer than it need to be. construction like should start from 60mm circle not center of drive? yup it shows on your print slot is unnessessary too long
@ctbram0627
@ctbram0627 5 жыл бұрын
Good tutorial but there are a couple very minor errors that were easy to sort out. (1) the method use to determine the length of the slot makes it to long. (2) there is a region that must be cut away from the driver wheel or there will be interference preventing the wheel to fully rotate. Here is a link to imgur images pointing out the errors: imgur.com/a/I8t6wkH Note that I did not discover the slot length issue until after I had the gear full built and assembled. I figured out a solution which is to just add a reference slot from the point the driven parts circle intersects the vector from the driver part to the edge of the driver parts circle. The section shown in the sketch in the imgur link below. I have not implemented it in my drawing as trying to do it breaks my time line so badly I pretty much have to start over from scratch to fix it (.
