I've seen this before and I admit, when you did your video on buying fad tools ,I was hoping this was going to be one of them. So glad you evidentially found this, I was very curious if :1- it was real, 2- if it worked, and 3- if the build quality was there. Thanks for the answers! Thanks for doing this video, I'll be ordering this if for nothing else, just to play with it, as I cant afford a Festool just for kicks, and to see if I can find a use for it. I'm a retired carpenter and now just piddle around my shop/garage because I like it, not for a living.

While it is true that the tool is $200, it could easily be worth the expediency to just leave a router in the tool permanently for expediency. So add in ~$150 for that and you're still only at ~$350.

Yeah, I expect to just leave it there. I’ll make my own floating tenons too, not too difficult to do and a good way to use up scrap. Plus then they’ll fit the existing bits I have (which are imperial and not metric). I have the DeWalt, which I’ll probably leave in it, as I have a bunch of routers (6 maybe?)

I've seen many wood worker using simple tenon jig with palm router, straight bit and router bushing to cut the tenons. The tool makes it go faster. Jig requires clamping for every hole. But the jig is very simple to make. It can be done with scrap wood so practically $0. I think this tool is good for weekend wood worker who's not willing to pay for dominos.

Plus $45 shipping so your at $400. Starting to get pricey for a “jig”. Of course if the router ever broke you could swap it out instead of bricking your whole tool. And you could take it out of the jig so it could work as another trim router if your project doesn’t require dominos. but $400 is still a lot of money.

As somebody that has had a domino for the past couple of years, I have to say I'm really impressed by this little jig. There have been quite a few times I've wished I could cut custom width dominos or at heights that aren't on the domino's pre-set little step and it looks like it would be really easy to do with this and if you made a couple of jigs (see below) you would be able to make it a lot quicker to use. - To set the depth, make a piece of wood with a series of different depth holes in it. With the router off, simply plunge the bit into the desired depth hole, and then tighten the depth knob when it hits the bottom. - To set how high you want the cut to be on an edge, you could have a simple stepped packer that gets pushed in-between the red and silver pieces. Push the two together so they are tight on the packer, then tighten the knob.

Yeah, I agree totally. I love my dominos, (I use both) but yes, at times, I want to put in two tenons, at fairly far apart, (like 2+ inches along the same mark) and the fence doesn't allow for that. This would. Sure, the domino is so much faster to set up than this one, but for that money, it would be worth having this in addition.

I actually bought and own this! My gripes with this is the fence doesn’t tilt to 45 degrees, the depth and height stops are easily moved when locked down, and the 1st iteration had a (higher quality in my opinion) spring loaded linear guide rail/bearing. I reached out to the manufacturer as to what exactly got “upgraded” to warrant a higher price for the second model as to which they replied “we painted red”. Buyers beware, I still would recommend it though. Just wish they would’ve stayed with the linear guide rails than just two thin rods.

Very Interesting. Thanks! The Domino is heavily overpriced I think. But this jig doesnt seem top be an aedequate solution anyway. Apart from dust collection also safety seems to be an issue with that jig. The router spins without a cover. And the dust collection for itself is already a big downside. Saving 1000$ is also not quite right because you got to have a certain router and cutting head. Fair enough though this seems to be kind of standard equipment.

Looks like a killer jig. I've never actually used a festool domino, but I did notice that all of the mortises cut seemed to be out of parallel with the surface (you can see it best at 7:03 where there's almost a one-ply slant to the cut). I'd imagine the Festool is a bit more consistent in keeping the mortise parallel, whereas - I'd imagine you'd have to be really careful with this jig to ensure both sides of the jig are dropping the same distance whenever you adjust it. Still looks like a great deal, but just something I noticed.

I have done over 100 mortises and occasionally will get a nasty kick back, I believe because of it moving on me. I find it works best to plunge a hole on the left and the right side and then make 3 passes across to finish it off. I also made a jig to clamp it to for standard 3/4 stock pieces. to make it a bit safer. It does work and is a great alternative until I get the real thing.

You could see if a 3/16 router bit might give you a tighter fit and still work with 5mm dominos. 3/16in is 4.76mm. You might be able to squeeze a 5mm domino into a 4.76mm mortise. I might try something like this one day, but I think I might prefer to just use multiple dowels + a doweling jig instead of dominos. Regarding dust collection, I think you could probably make a dust shroud and port that might work with that jig that might work ok, although I'd have to watch the video again and pause the frame to think about the best way to make it for that particular tool.

Look, people have been waiting (smart people have been biscuitting) for the patent to come off the Domino, as it did on the biscuit joinner. If a person was willing to do the work to do the SUPERIOR floating tenon (zero size limitation), there have been tons of options all along. Notably, plunge routers (mount the piece on the apron of your bench); Tenon attachments on stuff like saws, I am talking about the horizontal units that came on things like Inca table saws, or stand alone machines; Horizontal drills, a-la-Krenov; or horizontal milling machines. You can almost buy a plunge router for what that jig costs. Or a person could just cut joints that are superior to all these kludges, though stronger than strong enough is no biggie.

The patent on Domino expires in the next year or so. Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, et al are no doubt working on their domino cutters as I write. I'm sure there will be a low end model from Wen or Ryobi all the way up to pricier ones from Makita or Milwaukee, but still cheaper than Festool.

The Festool domino is a great idea but.........for the price of 1200 to 1500 I cannot justify the $$$ versus feature. That said I bought a full size M-T machine for less. But,, for portability I will pay 200 for a near clone.

When it was released it was $160. Now it’s $200 plus $45 shipping. $250 is just too much for a jig. Add in $130 for one of the two routers it works with and it’s not viable. At $150 and fits all name brand trim routers I would have bought it. I’ll just wait to see if a name brand makes a domino alternative next year for a few hundred bucks.

Great review. Looking to get one of these, since I already have the DeWalt router. I saw your link for a 5mm bit (1/4 shank), but can't seem to find them for 6, 8 or 10, except the dedicated Domino cutters. With regards to making your own loosed tenons, you are probably better off, as a TINY error in manufacturing can make enough difference in bit cut diameter.

That dewalt router is around 150$ brand new. So, for $350,00 the hobbist can easily do "domino" jobs. It's still way cheaper to use dowels, specially if you already own a drill press or get a 50~100$ jig. Considering how cheap and easy it can be to use dowels I don't think I'd go for this jig, unless my goal was to have this tool in a portable way with a battery powered router, but I'm unsure if it's better than simply carrying a doweling jig.

I get that there is a big elephant in the room, the price of the Festool Domino, And I'm closer to buying this Jig. Although to add up all the bits and pieces for this tool to be complete with various size collets, bits, and the router I come in closer to $450 for a complete machine. Still this might be my choice

Not interested in wasting $1,000 for the Festool dominion plus a another $1,000 on festool Extractor for dust collection. I already own a router and shop vac thank you. Using my existing Spiral bites to make mortise priceless.

It's cool, but hard pass for safety. Plunging the bit 1" from your fingers without a physical guard is bad design. The Domino is worth the price for safety and everything else it does better: precision, repeatability, ergonomics, dust collection, mitering, face mortising, and accessory system.

@03:20 Uhh... The Fixture not having a 2nd such Screw on the other side seems kinda like a dealbreaker for me as the weight of the Router causes the Fixture to sag on the unsecured end which can be seen @04:20 and later observed with the ever so slightly misaligned boards you've joined together. Also... $200.- for that!? That's as absurd as the 1'200.- Festool Price 🤣

With the patent set to expire some time next year (which other competitors are surely planning to release their versions of as soon as it does), unless I had a professional NEED to use a lot of loose tenon joinery NOW *and* in the future, I probably wouldn't buy either a festool nor a domino-jig like this, and instead just wait for a much cheaper, but still convenient, version; I'm sure ryobi will release a decent enough one, and I don't want to have already sunk $200+ into a tool that I plan on replacing in less than a year unless I absolutely HAVE to

One thought I had while watching this was safety. One thing I like about the domino is it's spring loaded. So if something gets out of hand, the bit retracts back into the tool. That thing is just flopping around all willy nilly. For a tool that seems to be geared for the hobbyist, I feel like it should have some kind of guard on top and a spring to add some resistance. But otherwise if you're on a budget, rock on!

Nice option for an overpriced Festool. I made a jig for my Bosch colt that does the same thing and I make my own tenons any size or length I want. I built an entire crib for my grand daughter using it with zero nails or screws. Took me a day to make the jigs and $40 worth of knobs and plexiglass. It's not as convenient as a Domino but it's just as accurate and I can even change bit / tenon size

For some DIY projekt, it is fine. But I had a day only just makeing domino holes with the festool domino jointer, and I didn't used the any markings, I used the pop out pins. With markind each pieces together, it would take me a one day job about 3 days.

Im honestly very surprised more jigs like this don't exist. The Domino is the most stupidly priced thing from Festool out of an entire catalog of expensive things. Unless you are using it everyday for work it makes no sense from a value perspective for hobbyists unfortunately.

I saw another KZbin video where the user was concerned about how close your hand was to the spinning bit, but as I see you demonstrate it, it looks extremely secure in that collar, and I don't see how your hand would ever come close to that spinning bit, unless you were really not careful. A tool that I would consider getting, but for now my Dowelmax works just fine for my needs.

I never figured out why anyone would bother with these biscuit tools. In my twenty five years as a boat carpenter I never did. You've already got a router, right? Just put a slotting cutter in it and slot both pieces to any length you wish, then cut splines to fit. You need to make the grain of the splines to be perpendicular to the length of the spline, but you knew that. As a bonus, a slotting cutter won't pull up or down like a dull end mill might.

I bought one of these and it worked great for about a year. After about a year it developed a lot of play in the lateral slide and I could find no way to tighten. After that it made tenons that had more of a football shape. It now resides at the dump.

Never got the idea behind dominos. Its just wider dowels, which means less surface area to glue on. Just make a jig for the drill and some dowels out of good wood (which dominos arent). Waaaaay more flexible, less tools needed and much less expensive. Only advantage for the domino as I see it is that you can rout out a few mils to one side if the initial hole was off, but otherwise I just dont see it.

Good review. As a hobbyist moving towards higher end furniture been looking at Festool May hold off thanks to this video. FYI, found this video showing at 5:29 how to do a shelf mid board. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaHFdJyvnK98Y80 he also shows how to do a loose tenon on small boards. So now really just the dust collection issue is holding me back.

how about adding a couple of pieces of lexan one on the base to make a 0 clearance base for those narrow or close to the edge holes and another on top under the handle to keep chips and debris from flying up or fingers going down , even put a trigger switch handle on the router bracket for easy on off --- Lots of modifications BUT!!!
