What if you could do REAL WOODWORKING with a laser? Featuring the xTool P2

What if you could do ACTUAL FINE WOODWORKING with a laser cutter? No burnt edges, smooth round overs, thick beefy legs and using real wood. I'm pushing the limits of what you can do with a desktop laser to make a side table that looks like it was made using traditional techniques.
I "borrowed" this design from a couple of images I saw on Pinterest assuming this was a common design. Turns out it's not and is a unique creation by Seth Mondragon. I should have done my research. Please check out his amazing work here: www.etsy.com/s...

Being a humble retiree, I would use the waste you are holding at 4:19 for an art piece, but that's just me. Very impressive project, but laser stuff is beyond me. The only laser work I can handle is like when I had my kids chase the red dot around the room.

In execution this idea is relatively simple, but coming up with the basic idea, then deciding to use the dowels for alignment, cutting the wood "veneer" (that's not a veneer)... all of that stuff, sir, is ingenious.

Your camera is more accurate than ours. There is software available through x-tool to calibrate them but there are no clear instructions. I've read that this is a problem for other users as well and the solution is just to figure out how far off it is and then try to compensate for it by moving your design within the workspace. I will probably have to contact support to get the issue resolved. Great video. I watched one of your older videos the other day and realized you are somewhat local to me. ( i live in Morenci Mi. Right on the border) I didn't know about Ken craft until I watched that video. I'm going to have to make a trip and check it out.

I have the xTool D1 Pro, and it's fantastic, but after making tons of boxes and signs and simple engravings, I'm kinda antsy to do something else. It couldn't make anything at this scale very easily, but the techniques you used have my brain cooking up ideas.

I have the Xtool D1 pro 20W (diode rather than CO2 with the extended rails - there's a 40W too) - also a great modelling and woodworking tool and can eat 6mm ply (never use it for anything thicker although it can). Only downside is the diode's inability to cut translucent/clear/white materials - but _much_ cheaper than the full CO2 with cabinet etc. for a similar outcome. Good project BTW !
@thomascrow5037
@thomascrow5037 8 ай бұрын
I have the same, except not the pro... I get the most use out of it in making router templates. The 20w will cut 3/8" pine like butter. I think 1/2" is the thickest I've cut with it..... well, I did try 3/4" once and started a small fire.
@DavZell
@DavZell 8 ай бұрын
The S1 is very much like the P2 here, but a diode. It also has surface mapping and is enclosed. It doesn't have a camera, but you can very accurately mark areas to cut via a visual mapping system the shows the current position and mapped areas in the software. I actually prefer this method.

Isn't it funny how opinions on things change over time, as what was one thought of as cheap, now isn't so cheap? I remember being a kid, my dad thought of plywood anything as being cheap, especially furniture. Nowadays though, we've got furniture made out of material even cheaper than plywood, because good plywood isn't cheap. I don't know what they'll use next after cardboard gets too expensive....

Okay, I know I'm being that ass here, but it's got to be said... Love that new laser planer, laser jointer, the laser miter saw... The Band saw might actually be the one that could be made laser... Two.lasers, focused right at each other, one up, the other down... Just saying, it technologically might be possible. (Ya, I know, the laser miter saw is actually even more feasible... But let's be honest, the laser is basically just a CNC laser scroll saw.) Anyways, 😂 love those laser tools you found! 😅

Question - how repairable is the laser? I have a glowforge plus that I already once had to buy their refurb and fingers crossed 🤞🏻 nothing happens again soon but it frustrated me to no end that you can't really service a glowforge (I know there are some forums out there that help a bit but nothing official). Anyway, point being if and when something happens I'm not giving glowforge anymore money and I want a laser that I can buy and swap parts to get it back up and running and wondering if the xtool allows this (ie sells the parts and the machine comes apart)?
