Watch me unbox this cold process soap starter kit from Makesy. First, I'll tell you my overly detailed (ha!) and completely honest first impressions of this kit, followed by a thorough soap making session with the kit, and finally cutting the soap and final thoughts. This is our very first review video and we don't take it lightly! I did a LOT of research on this kit (and spoke to the president of Makesy, Charlotte) before agreeing to do this review. So, while this video is sponsored, it is absolutely my honest opinion of this kit, as an experienced soapmaker. If you have any questions about this kit, please feel free to ask me anything!

I’m ‘NEW’ ‘NEW’ to soap making I don’t have a single clue about any of it…. I am however an experienced candle maker for many years. A lot of these companies sell both types of supplies. I’ve always been interested in trying soap making. Getting into something new can be expensive. Im picky and don’t want to waste my time or money on things I won’t need while still receiving quality products that will turn out nice & last. This gives me time to decide if I liked it and want to commit to the next level…. I really liked your video & sound of your voice. I believe i could listen to you teach anything. 😊❤ I like how you printed the directions and incorporated your own personal preferences into it. I’m one of those type people, I learn by reading, seeing, doing… Thanks for making the video! I know I appreciated it and will probably reference back to it…

This is such a nice thoughtful comment - thank you! I'm so glad to hear that you found this video helpful. I do appreciate that this kit includes high-quality items and that it's easy to dive in and start making soap without a bunch of extra supplies. As a candle maker, you'll probably find a lot of similarities with soapmaking! Let me know if you decide to try it! I'd love to hear how the kit worked for a complete beginner. Happy soapin'!

It would be better if they provided a kit that didn't use controversial Palm Oil as an ingredient, it's not an essential product to make soap there are plenty of sustainable substitutes that can be used, Muddy Mint is a Palm Oil free business, this shows it can be done when profit is not your no 1 priority.,

Agreed! They are working on a palm-free kit and the kit I review in this video uses sustainable RSPO palm oil. We are palm oil free, but we support soap companies that use sustainable palm. Using alternatives to palm is certainly more expensive and sometimes that's difficult for new soapmakers. We want to encourage everyone to get started making soap and then find their path. I started using palm way back when and ultimately decided not to use it. Unfortunately, a lot of ingredients have sustainability issues, including cocoa butter and shea butter, which is what I use instead of palm. It's a really tough problem and palm is so heavily used in the food industry that it's become a central topic of conversation. That doesn't mean that all the other oils don't have issues of their own. We just try to do our best and work towards making the world a better place!

You did a fabulous job with this kit. It’s neat that you went through it just like a new soaper’s would. Joanna thought of nearly everything except including a whisk and the water, which would’ve been great to include for new soaper’s. I’m not sure how much this kit costs nor how may bars it produces, hope the retail cost of the bar allows for making back most of the kit price. You wouldn’t have to buy all of the kit again to make soap, just the ingredients, and it would be nice to know what that might cost. Overall I think your video review was a success and new soapmaker’s will find it very helpful. Hugz, Tree
@muddymintsoap
@muddymintsoap Жыл бұрын
Thank you and yes! Good points. I should calculate how much soap you can make from this kit to get an idea of the cost per bar. I barely used any of the oils and lye-water, so there's plenty left to make more. I still have enough essential oils for one more batch as well. The price of the kit is currently (July 2023) $259.95 and you can get 20% off with my code. You get a really nice mold, a stick blender, and a scale, along with a bunch of great containers, so it seems pretty reasonable to me. In the description, it says the kit makes 32 bars of soap. I sell my bars for $10 each, so I'd make my money back already. If you sold them for $8 each, you'd pretty much break even and have your equipment, so that's not bad. Once you've made the initial investment, you'd need to buy more trinity blend and 50/50 lye water solution, plus some essential oils or fragrance. The colorants and botanical would last for a few more batches. I personally never use a whisk, so I don't think you really need it and the reason they don't provide the "extra" liquid is because they want you to be able to use whatever you want. The easiest thing to do would be to use milk from your fridge (if you drink milk). Overall, I think it's a great investment and it's really nice to get everything you need in one kit!

I agree. A newbie needs to understand that the 4-6 week drying/curing time must be observed. A simple open box with a wire ‘cheese cutter’ would be better for the Beginning also as the bench scraper is awful terribly cheap, considering the high quality silicone-lined dovetailed wooden box/lid and immersion blender. This starter-kit could take someone well into the first two years of soap-making, as they really learn the Craft.

Hi there! I really don't mind the soap cutter included in the kit. I think it's a great inexpensive way to start and I cut all my soap this way in the beginning. A miter box is an easy add on to that cutter as well. You're right that the mold is lovely, which is one of my favorite parts of the kit! For the curing time, I agree that it's important to understand the distinction between saponified and cured. Thanks for watching!

Thanks again for this video! The recipe that comes with the starter kit uses a 5 lb mold. How would I figure out how much of the trinity oil, 50/50 ly solution, and distilled water I would need to use if I was using a 3 lb mold?
@muddymintsoap
@muddymintsoap 5 ай бұрын
Ah, yes. Good question! If you're making 2.5 lbs, you should be able to simply divide the recipe by half. For 3 lbs, it's more complicated. If you can put everything in a lye calculator that would also help, but we don't know the ratio of oils in this blend or the SAP value. I'll send Makesy this question - they are usually great at answering quickly!

Wonderful video! I really appreciate you breaking it down for newbies like me. Question: Does it make financial sense to continue to use Makesy's trinity blend and 50/50 lye solution, or would it be a lot cheaper to mix the ingredients yourself? I guess I'm trying to get an idea of whether there is much of a difference in doing it yourself of buying it all premixed. Thank you ◡̈
@muddymintsoap
@muddymintsoap 6 ай бұрын
Hi there! Glad you enjoyed the video! That's a great question. I'm sure it's cheaper to mix the ingredients yourself (that's almost always the case!), but you do want to include your time into the equation as well. You can probably do the math to see what the price difference is, including your labor, and figure out if it's worth it to you. You'll want to take into account the cost of shipping as well. Normally if you order in bulk, you'll save a lot of money too, but you'll want to be sure you have room to store everything and that you have the proper equipment, if needed. I hope this helps!

First Thank you for making beautiful videos for us to watch. I was looking for a video like this on soap making. Let me explain why the 50/50 lye solution is so important in soap making. If the mixture of water and sodium hydroxide is more or less what is the effect on the soap? please explain this. Thank you
@muddymintsoap
@muddymintsoap 2 ай бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for watching! The mixture has to be at least 50/50 MINIMUM to make soap, as you need at least that amount of water to mix the lye. You never want to use less water than sodium hydroxide (this is measured by weight). After that, you can add more water to make your soap batter more fluid. The less water there is, the faster your soap will come to trace. If there's a lot of water, the batter will be easy to work with, but you might find the soap is difficult to unmold as it remains too soft. This recipe uses two parts water to one part lye, which is what we use for all our soapmaking. I hope this helps!

@muddymintsoap

Hi there! We have an entire video explaining this technique (how to use a 50/50 lye water solution for soapmaking), if you're interested! Basically, a 50/50 lye water solution allows you to use other liquids in your soap more easily, such as milk, and it allows you to batch your lye-water ahead of time so you don't have to make your lye-water before every soapmaking session. @muddymintsoap
@muddymintsoap 8 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, good question. The Bubble Book, which I reference in the video, does include other recipes, including ones with additional oils and even one without the trinity blend. However, since we don't know the percentages of oils in the blend, it is difficult to come up with your own recipe and put it in a soap calculator. My guess is that this is a blend of 1/3 of each of the oils (olive, coconut, and palm) and when I put it in the soap calculator, the lye amount works out. So, 48 oz of the trinity blend is likely 16 oz of olive, 16 oz of coconut, and 16 oz of palm. This is a pretty common soapmaking blend and would end up being a hard bar of soap due to the high amounts of palm and coconut. I hope this helps a little! Note that makesy is very easy to work with and willing to answer questions, so I'm sure they would help you with this!

Sorry Simi, I am unsubscribing and won't purchase any more soaps from Muddy Mint, quoting from your website "All my products are palm-oil free, as sustainability is at the heart of my business", this was the reason I purchase product from you for myself and as gifts ! , unfortunately it looks like you have bowed to someone like Makesy, that’s a shame as I like your channel and your products, large corporations like Makesy support the use of Palm oil in this kit via their Trinity Blend, why do they use it ? (because it's a dirt cheap oil so they can make maximum profit) irrespective of RSPO (this certification is not working). It's a known fact Palm oil has had devastating effects on other parts of the world's environment due to greed and money, it's use is destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino, as Maksey website quotes "The formula that has sold tens of millions of bars" that's an awful lot of Palm Oil usage. I guess when the problem is not in your backyard it doesn't affect you. if we don't stand up and let these suppliers know it's not ok, the Palm Oil situation will never improve, we can't keep ignoring the Palm Oil industry it completely corrupted by the big players, I also unsubscribed from Ellen Ruth for the same reason after she gave a glowing review of the same kit that goes against her philosophy, review money does funny things to people. I guess Makesy paid well for this review, because it goes against your sustainability statement, quoting from your website “Muddy Mint will always stay true to its roots: all-natural, palm-free, small batch skincare... but, you all seem to love our soap so much, that we'll be expanding, while still keeping these principles at the core of our business “ I get the feeling words are just words, they look good on a webpage but don't really mean anything when money is involved, assume you will delete this comment, that's ok if you do it just reinforces the constant ignoring of the Palm Oil problem by the West.

Hi there! I'm so sorry you feel this way, but I understand what you're saying. As I mentioned, I don't take partnership lightly and I talked to the president of Makesy, Charlotte, quite a lot before agreeing to do this video. At the end of our conversations, I was very impressed with the business and their values. Makesy purchases RSPO palm oil exclusively (roundtable for sustainable palm oil) and they are in the process of becoming RSPO certified, so they take this very seriously. They are also working on putting out a palm-free kit! There are a lot of soap companies using palm oil that are doing a great job of sourcing their palm sustainably. In my opinion, palm oil is not going away, so working towards sustainable palm is a very important step! When I started making soap seven years ago, the options were more limited, but things have changed and while I don't personally use palm, I am okay with using soap make from sustainable palm. That's my personal opinion after doing a lot of research!

By the way, I did not do this video for the money. We spent hours and hours making this video and the pay was definitely less than minimum wage for the time spent! This channel is about helping soapmakers and I'm sure many new soapmakers are looking at this kit and wondering if it's worth it for them. I also thought that the video would be helpful to new soapmakers just starting out, as I tried to go through the entire soapmaking process with the kit from start to finish. So, the intent was to add value and educate our audience. There's no obligation to buy this kit after watching the video! Hopefully those that don't want to use palm will also benefit from the soapmaking demo.

And one last thing (because I don't know when to shut up - haha!), this kit was made in partnership between Makesy and SoapGal. I absolutely love the Soap Gal and if you watch her KZbin channel, you will too. She is who they are referring to when they say millions of bars were made from this formula. For me, working and partnering with good people that are really trying to help and are kind-hearted is very important. You can be sure that I'll never put out a video without my honest opinion and I do mention that the kit uses palm oil and that I'm not in favor of the stated 2-day cure time. I told Makesy I would be giving my honest opinion and they were completely fine with that. Just like you're allowed to have your opinion about this video. I guess I'm a little saddened to see your comment because I really thought long and hard before making this video and asked a lot of questions and did a ton of research on the kit. I tried my best to put all the information out there and at the end of the day, I love this kit and I wish it was around when I started. That's why I made the video. No amount of money will sway me to lie or change my values. That, I can absolutely promise. I hope you'll stick around. :)

@@muddymintsoap Thankyou for the reply, while a agree the Palm Oil industry needs to clean it's act up, this doesn't help with the environmental damage already done and still being done which can't be ignored, the entire industry is corrupt, and is going to take an awful lot of anti-corruption tactics to clean it up, it's also going to take decades and millions of $ to replace the rainforest that's been destroyed, this won't happen any time soon because the demand for it is only increasing, RSPO is a start but is not moving quick enough to stop further damage, as you know Palm Oil is not a necessary ingredient to make soap, there are plenty of alternate oils that produce beautiful bars of soap, yours being a shining example. The sad thing is this is not happening in our part of the world, it's happening in the poorer parts where the locals are being threatened and taken advantage of and destroying their local habitat, all so the big corporations (Unilever being the worst) can make a profit irrespective of the locals, it's use in soap is basically so we in the west can have a big bubbly bar that lasts a few seconds before it disappears down the drain. It's completely crazy as it's an un-necessary ingredient for products like soap, if it was some miracle cancer fighting ingredient then harvesting would be justified but still controlled in an environmentally responsible manner, which it is not at this time, it's use in food and soap is purely because it's cheap and give's a good result, you said " In my opinion, palm oil is not going away" this is correct at the moment but is not a given, we consumers need to let the manufacturers know we won't purchase their palm oil goods especially when there are alternatives, if the demand starts to drop for the oil due to consumer pressure then the industry will start to dwindle. In regards to the kit, yes I think it's a good idea to help people get into soap making, watching Ellen review it, I was shocked by how much plastic packaging there was in the kit, In regards to their Trinity oil it would have been better for Maksey to set an example to others, and release a palm-free kit to start with, rather than release it with palm oil (this was obviously done to get it to market as quick as possible and would have been done with the guidance of soap Gal) who I don't follow for the same palm oil reason. Maksey could have promoted their kit as palm oil free and led by example, it will be interesting to see if they discontinue the palm oil kit if a palm free kit eventuates, I assume the palm free kit / trinity oil will be even more expensive than it is now which is IMO very expensive given the raw cost of Olive / Coconut / Palm oil, let alone when you purchase it in bulk quantities which they would be, it's all about profit for these guys, and because everyone else is doing it they justify their own usage, setting an example to others would be more genuine from these guys rather than going along with what everyone else is doing. Below is a sad documentary of what's been happening in Indonesia, as I said it's not on our backdoor so we don't care about it, but it's on someone's kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqO2gouNa5Wfi8U
