Hi, thank you so much for your videos! I became interested in soaps and personal products for men a few years back after developing severe allergies and chemical sensitivity to synthetic fragrances, detergents, and other chemicals that major brands are using. Unfortunately, the "sensitive/natural" brands that are available are cost-prohibitive and the big box brands still sneak in chemicals that I can't use. Or worse, they change their recipe midway through the year and I have a reaction. I'm now at a point in my life where I am ready to try to make my own products. I'll have my first batch of unscented soap ready for the new year. I will make these available for sale and see where it goes from there.

How long this lye solution can be stored? I have use this method but i forgot how long i made it for sure n my batter didn't emulsified nor reached trace. What can I do to fix this batter? Thanks
@muddymintsoap6 күн бұрын
Hi there! As long as it has a tight lid and is stored in a cool dry place, you can keep this for at least a month or two. The main issue with old lye-water is that the water could potentially evaporate (for example, this might happen in the warm summer months if the container is not stored properly) and then your solution would be lye-heavy. The fact that your batter didn't emulsify sounds to be like you didn't use enough lye?
@RHPutri6 күн бұрын
@muddymintsoap I have used enough amount of lye. But I didn't store it in a tight closed jar. I put in an open jar😂 as I thought I would execute my soap as the solution cooled down, but unpredictable things happened which made me delay the soapmaking process. Do you think I need to make a new lye solution for the batter? How many?
@muddymintsoap6 күн бұрын
What I mean is that the solution would have less water if the water evaporated, which means that when you pour the solution, you can’t be certain that you have the same amount of water and lye. I would discard this solution if it is old and you didn’t have a lid on it. I’d make some fresh lye water and start again! If you keep your lye water for longer than a day, make sure that the solution has a tight lid on it and store in a cool dry place.

Hi Simi, Please could you help me? I was binge watching all your videos and decided to finally dive in and make a shampoo bar, mainly because my friend gave me garden-fresh rosemary bunches and I didnt know what else to do with them. So I plunged into making a rosemary shampoo bar. But when I poured the lye mix into the oils, I discovered that quite a lot of the lye had solidified at the bottom of my container, probably because I didnt stir the lye into the water well enough. So now I have a very wet mixture, probably not enough lye to create a chemical reaction with my oils and take me to trace. I've been stick blending on and off for over 4 hours now, but while the mixture that is caked on the blender seems to have thickened slightly, the batter in the bowl is totally liquid. How can I rescue this? I thought about adding some more lye water but I'd have no clue how much now, as there's no way to tell how much lye got wasted. I also put my bowl on a double boiler to heat the oils in the hope that that would help them thicken, but that didnt work either. Please help! I dont want to throw such expensive and precious ingredients away (I wouldnt even know how to safely dispose of them!).
@muddymintsoap10 күн бұрын
Oh gosh! It sounds like you’re thought it through the same way I would have, but without knowing how much lye is missing, it’s hard to add what is needed. Honestly, I’m not very good at “rescuing” soap. I don’t have the patience for it and when I have tried it, it ended up being a waste of time and materials (I even once destroyed a crockpot trying to rebatch!). The real question is: why did your lye solidify at the bottom? Like you said, you probably didn’t mix long enough. I’d say this was one of those lessons that are part of the journey. If you do want to try to rebatch, try to figure out how much lye is missing (can you weigh what is left in your lye container once the container dries out?) and then you can add more lye or hot process and add more lye there. Good luck!

What is the difference between the individual recipes and the recipe book? I am trying to make the 7.5 pounds of soap mould
@muddymintsoap13 күн бұрын
Hi there! The recipes in the book are brand new and were created especially for yeast book. They are certainly inspired by many of our soaps over the years. The recipes in the book are for 2.5 lb molds, so you’d need to multiply by 3 for your mold. The recipes on our website are our actual proprietary soap recipes that we made and sold for years. We’ve sold thousands of all of these bars both retail and wholesale. They are well loved and sell very well! These recipes are written for a 5 lb mold, do you’d need to multiply them by 1.5. I hope this helps! ❤️

@muddymintsoap15 күн бұрын
Hi there! In soapmaking, ingredients are always measured by weight. Whether an ingredient is solid or liquid, the weight is the same. So, as long as you’re using ounces (not fluid ounces!), then you should be good! Your solid coconut oil weighs the same in solid form as it does in liquid form. :)

Finding the suppliers and the little details is all part of earning your badge as a business owner. Everyone wants shortcuts these days… they want the ones that came before them to just hand over the code to the vault & I hate it. This March will mark 10 yrs in business for myself. I worked my azz off with 4 kids, the youngest two were in diapers when I started my skincare business. Within the first year I put myself through school & got my Esthetician license. Four hours of sleep a night. Formulating & order fulfillment all weekend every weekend. It was challenging but rewarding & NO ONE HANDING ME ANYTHING. I built my baby AUTHENTICALLY in every way! THAT is how it is supposed to be! NOT hopping on youtube & being given everything on a silver platter.

@@inkpearls3364what? Where did any of this come from? Isn’t this page about sharing information about starting and operating a small business? Sorry your life was so hard? Now what? Do you want a cookie? You need therapy and a blunt.
@muddymintsoap6 күн бұрын
Honestly, I understand this perspective, as I’ve had a lot of people ask me for all kinds of information in the past that I worked very hard to learn. When someone asks you out of the blue “where do you get your essential oils?”, I would often reply with: “part of owning a business is finding suppliers that work for you and this takes time and going through that journey yourself is part of the learning process”. But, I also got so much help from incredibly kind soapmakers and I’ve shared a lot back and forth with many makers over the years. When there’s respect both ways, it feels different. So, I’m here to share what I’ve learned along the way because I feel like a lot of this information is missing out there. But, I agree that to be a successful business owner, you need to be able to figure this stuff out yourself (and KZbin videos is part of that equation!). You need a lot of strength and perseverance running a business, but kindness and generosity goes a long way too. ❤️

You did an outstanding job of explaining this. It really helped me understand that calculator so much better and gave me a firm understanding of lye water ratio's and solution. That was the main part I was stuck on. I have read books and saw that most recommend the 2:1 solution inless someone is doing a water discount method for faster curing. I am subscribed and look forward to future videos.. My one question to add to your pile... What is the process for pricing soap..
@muddymintsoap15 күн бұрын
I'm so happy to hear this! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing! Pricing soap is kind of complex and I'm of the opinion that you should price competitively when you're first starting out (which many would disagree with). Once you have more of a reputation and reviews (for example, on Etsy), then people are willing to pay more. We have a free spreadsheet on our website to help you figure out the base price of your oils and then you can add the remainder of your ingredients. We'll do a very thorough pricing video in the future, but for now, know your bar cost, know the price of your competition, take into account whether you are doing wholesale or not, and price accordingly. And of course, make sure you're making a profit! :)

Hi there! I'm so happy to hear this video was helpful! Yes, a scale that doesn't reset is critical to soapmaking (I think). Some of our baker's racks were purchased on Amazon and some on Webstaurant. The ones I like the best have the rails 5" apart and hold 12 trays. After curing, we store our soaps on wire shelving with mats. You can see all of our cured soap shelves on our Studio Tour video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3eyXn2Gp8iIsLMsi=R0cPyWOzhSnjkyLg. This was our old studio. We are now in a smaller space. :)

Work a a place where I have gotten a lot of wooden boxes the measurements are 15" long x 6 1/4 wide x 4" height if you could help me in that direction that would be great. I do not have silacone liners for these boxes so I have butcher paper to line them with. I make Candles right now but would like to add soaps to my line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. @muddymintsoap24 күн бұрын
Hi there! Great question. There is a formula that you can use that will get you pretty close. Assuming your mold is rectangular, you can multiply the inside dimensions of your mold together (length x width x height) and then multiply that by 0.4 to get an approximate oil weight for your recipe. So, assuming the dimensions you included in your comment are inside dimensions of the mold, then you would use (15 x 6.25 x 4) x 0.4 = 150 oz of oil. I hope that helps!

Hello! I was just wondering if you put the recipes using milk in the fridge or is it not necessary? I see everywhere that you need to fridge . Thank you for letting me know!
@muddymintsoap24 күн бұрын
Hi there! We just leave our milk soaps out and let them do their thing. I used to put our milk soaps in the fridge, but it doesn't really work when you use wood molds, as the wood is insulating the soap and the fridge is trying to cool it down, so you often end up with a gel ring this way. If you're using a rigid sided silicone mold, then it works much better to use the fridge! And, the only real reason to do it is to keep your soaps whiter, which is more of an issue with goat milk than with coconut milk. I hope this helps!
