Y'know, I'd really love to think Hasbro are doing this as a way of staying in their lane and hustling novel toys that look cool to kids, but it's clear their jimmies are rustled about the state of the market, so I feel like the intent behind the design may be poisoned by that failure to lead the industry as strongly as previous years. If they keep that up, they will continue to decline in popularity. I think 3rd party will make a copy of the UO darts as a couple more blasters trickle out, and I think that will be a mistake. DZ with the bamboo form factor are the innovators here, their crosswind-reduction body design is much more aerodynamically valuable. As for the UO fins, they're likely just tying to break up vortex streets, such that a cylindrical profile builds in flight, by allowing airflow to dump in behind the dart where the low pressure would normally form... and maybe create some resistance to the familiar motion of an unstable dart 'wagging it's tail' in flight. It doesn't seem like it's paying off though. These darts aren't head-stabilized so the CoM doesn't need to be so far forward, these are closer to a rocket design than the (currently very popular) reentry vehicle style of dart design; I guess the real issue with copying rocket design is that rockets are self-propelled projectiles. The extra projectile weight is definitely a plus for crosswind and uneven air density pockets though. I give the UO one raised eyebrow out of ten.

I think Hasbro are more ruffled by there inability to do anything about Amazon, China and infringements on their existing patents. From what I have heard they are planning to move a lot of their manufacturing to India because of this and the Trade War between the US and China. If DZ are moving towards mass manufacturing for the Pro series hopefully the Bamboos will come down in price. It's also relatable to arrows and throwing darts. Look up the FirstStrike Rounds for Paintball, they have flush fins.

I'm in the sporting goods/equipment camp. I think there's a lot of benefit to getting options like this out of the toy isle and into the eyes of firearm hobbyists. As for your question about age limits, I bet it will work just like airsoft. You'll need to be 18 to buy it, but anyone may legally use it because it isn't a firearm.

If the Dart Zone Pro Mk1.1 ends up being a watered down version aimed at kids, hopefully it comes with the half length darts so that joule for joule you'll have something much better than Ultra. Personally though I think the Mk1.1 will be sold as sporting goods and not be watered down.

Competitive nerf and the modding market is definitely a niche market. It is a small community, and smaller companies like Worker have made good money off a niche market like this, but this isn't the type of market that I can ever see a big company like Hasbro catering to.

They sell actual firearms in Walmart, so yeah, they sell air-soft. DZP mk1.1 being sold as sports equipment is possible, but less likely.

@@MakeTestBattle I think that if you're a minor accompanied by an adult, have proof you're over 16, or have some written (somehow verifiable? dunno how exactly it works) permission, you can buy air-soft as a minor I honestly don't know a lot, mostly second hand, since I never bought air-soft as a kid

This was still as you used to say "Just educational enough". I loved your insights and questioning of company motives. Personally for me (on the subject of blatant patent infringement by Chinese companies), I don't think Luke from OOD could be held liable for patent infringement because the design of Nerf Rival rounds isnt really proprietary. They cant send a cease and desist on him selling 7/8" foam balls with dimples. Not enough ground to stand on. Great video guys. I always love MTB content.

I like the Styrofoam, I'd be curious to see a 1/2 inch dart with a solid silicone tip, but the same foam as ultra.

You can copy the ultra darts by just using the appropriate size foam backerrod and gluing on a darthead. The thing I'm more interested in and haven't seen anybody do yet is a range comparison between an ultra dart and a half dart fired at the same fps. If the ultra dart flies further then there's a reason to use that material and develop an accu-ultra dart, otherwise there's no reason to use that material at all. That drm's gonna be ripped out first thing by every modder anyway.

I believe that the DZ pro 1.1 would simply be their bamboo darts. Since a lot of hobbyists buy the retail available 200 packs of darts, it would make sense to sell bamboo darts at the store level. Nerf clearly has a reputation to keep and doesn’t want to be affiliated with modders, that’s why they don’t sponsor events such as endwar, however brands like X-Shot and dart zone don’t need to keep such reputations so they can make hobby grade blasters and sponsor events.
