Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time KZbinr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. I have enough to last me for a year or so in case there's a makeup shortage! 😆 Maybe longer when it comes to eye shadow! The only problem would be mascara that needs to be replaced 2 to 4 months after opening, according to the FDA. Although I think I have a couple of minis I got as GWP that I never opened...

Drugstore makeup and skin care prices have jumped incredibly high since covid. Comparable to some high end in Sephora. I can see why some go the extra and buy at Sephora. Stepping into the Drugstore versus Sephora is a different experience and it makes a difference sometime. Feels more luxurious and immersed in the world of self care.

@@teripacini5611 I have yet to see any drugstore foundation over $20 with the exception of the new Cover Girl Essence. The Chanel foundation I used to wear has sprung up to $70 from $50. La Mer from $120 to $150. Shopping at Sephora is far from a luxurious experience. If I want high end, I’d rather go to Sak’s or Nordstrom’s where they do show appreciation for their customers and the service far exceeds anything Sephora or Ulta could dream of giving.

Covid also made it much harder to shop for drugstore makeup. Stores closed or limited in-store stock, no testers anymore. The same happened in Sephora but it was much easier to shop for high end makeup online. High end brands had better product photos and tons of swatches, which made it easier to find a shade match. Plus its easier to return makeup bought at Sephora than, say, CVS. If it was easier to buy online, drugstore brands might be doing better.

This video subject so on point. Women you see out and about most places today, except at a special occasion affair or a party, just don’t seem to be wearing makeup or wearing attractive clothes. Except for super casual items, I don’t see women wearing other types of clothing currently on display in stores. Maybe they dress up nicer in a work setting? I also can’t get my head around parents allowing, much less paying for kids to indulge in expensive skin care or makeup. Whatever happened to “modest” allowances that a kid had to save up to buy something special? These indulgent parents are setting really bad precedents with their kids that don’t bode well for the kids’ self-reliance or self esteem.

Clinique and Estée Lauder is as high end as it got in my house when my sister and I were teens, and that was rare. 😂 Lots of parents in the social media generation have never learned how to say, “no.” Virality is a new form of peer pressure and it’s changed a lot in retail trends. Personally I’m wearing the same amount of makeup as I always have because I don’t pay attention to trends. I’ve been wearing the same browny/mauve lip shades since I was in high school because I think that’s what goes best with my skin tone (yellow based pinks and reds look awful on me). I never went along with the heavy Kardashian 2016-ish look because that’s just not my style. I buy based on what I think looks best on me and forget what Hollywood or social media tells me I should be doing.

There's something called the lipstick effect where consumers with less money to spend will splurge on items like higher end lipsticks. One thing you touched on in the video is the rising cost of drugstore brands. With that narrowing price difference, why not splurge for a product that's a better quality? I feel like in general it's an odd time in the beauty industry. Brands are duping each other, doing similar marketing, etc. I can't remember the last time I saw a new launch I was excited about.

beauty and makeup will never be dead. just in various states of flux alongside our social and economic climates. i don’t think this industry will ever not be colossal, just that it’ll have to keep up with what the people want. and as for why higher end products seem to be performing better, i honestly put that down to virality, fomo, influencer culture and content creation. brand deals and sponsorships may also be contributing towards that. and i have a suspicion that people may be buying more beauty products on credit or with things like klarna and after pay. but i could be wrong there. really glad to see you doing more commentary content as i love listening to your perspectives 🥰

It's so funny - I tell people that during the pandemic I didn't learn to make sourdough bread, I learned about makeup. I still do simple looks more than anything (I'm a hard core 1 and done shadow gal) but when the pandemic hit I was on zoom meetings all day all the sudden and needed to figure out how to look good on camera, which was a totally new skill set for me. Makeup became a fun escape and a way for me to be creative and play with color and do something that made me feel good during a time of huge stress. The problem now is that I own WAAAAAAYYYYY too much makeup! I've slowly been curating my collection and weeding out the things that I don't really use (too much of which I impulse bought because of something I saw on KZbin) and honing in on the things that I love and get a lot of use out of. So I'm still loving makeup but I'm not buying much at all right now. As a 77 year old, who was a makeup artist and hairstylist, and who uses makeup almost every day, this was mind boggling. Last year was the first time ever I had purchased a "Luxury" product (Chanel & Dior) and to think that parents are allowing their children to buy these really high end products is frankly amazing. I wonder if these statistics are the same all over the world? As an older woman, I am fully aware of the ageism which is rampant here in the US (especially at Sephora - which is strange as it is a French company) , but cannot believe 10 & 12 yr olds are setting the trends. These tweens don't need the type of skin care they are buying - definitely sunscreen, but not retinols and I have heard reports of damage to their skin. I spend the most on skin care, but I buy from Beauty Pie - so this keeps the cost down for first rate products. Parents need to look at what examples they are setting - I hope they are asking their kids to chip in to the cost of these products. I realize I'm as old as dirt, but we weren't allowed to wear makeup at school, and all wore on the weekends was mascara, wing eyeliner and very pale lipstick! I used Nivea cream exclusively for years, (and still use it if my skin feels parched). I don't think the tweens are buying high end because of the price of drugstore being so high, but think they deserve the fancy stuff when they see it all over TikTok etc. Only old ladies wear eyeshadow - seriously? Even a one and done is still shadow. Brilliant piece of reporting, Jen.

It makes sense why luxury is popular rn, because a lot of people are starting to think of it as a want and not a need - I think 5-10 years ago makeup was a very trendy topic, now it’s associated with status, especially anything marketed as “clean.” People do think that if they buy from certain brands it’s not only aesthetically pleasing for social media but it is both aspirational and about status. And everything is getting more expensive except for fast beauty. I’m predicting that this year will be the first year that elf doesn’t see growth because of the changing attitudes about affordable beauty & the same could happen with Colourpop, as well.

Excellent research, Jen! Boy, parents buying Stanley mugs and high end makeup for their kids? Parenting or indulgence? Are parents in touch caving to peer pressure or out of touch being unable to say “no”? Yeah.. it’s hard, but necessary. Parents have the opportunity to teach their kids manners, mutual respect, how to be contributors in society and how to make decisions. Teach them how to budget their allowance. Or are allowances a thing anymore? They should be. It teaches work ethic which is missing these days. What is a chore worth each time it is done? How many times a week is the chore completed? What is the quality of the work? Are reminders necessary? This forms value of the allowance and future increases when work is done with pride. You are not given an allowance, you earn it. Have goals and save for them. Basic principles. Instead, parents are trying to spare their kids from being bullied for not having a Stanley mug. Sad.

I don't shop online - with the exception of two sets of your excellent brushes and a couple of eyeshadow palettes that, quite frankly, have migrated to back-of-the-drawer, bottom-of-the-stack status. I shop in-person at discount stores bc I love the thrill of the hunt and the discovery surprises of some great high-end products. I don't understand the overall business of makeup, but I do love the effect that business has on my look and attitude! So thank you for your influence! And for this video - the trip down memory lane is so much fun!

I curate what I use and buy selectively both drugstore and “prestige” but I do wear makeup to give me a boost. I have a chronic illness (MS) and sometimes I need that boost when I head to work, or even when I’m working from home. It’s always been for me. I just got a $90 Hourglass palette I pondered for weeks, and put it on to hang out on the couch ;)

Makeup in the 80s was awful. It put me off wearing it until the mid 90s when a more natural look came back in. Sometimes I watch movies from the 80s, and even the early 90s, and laugh at the hair and makeup!

The viral trends are driving up debt. People need to stop and think about what they are doing with kids and makeup and other stuff. Children will not appreciate things if they continue to be "given" what they want. As for people looking sloppy when they go out in public, I personally think it's gross and that the old saying of "you only get one chance to make a first impression" is true. While I don't put on lashes every day ....I do put on full makeup.

I agree...I'm betting a lot of this stuff is being purchased on credit (because they're aren't THAT many rich people out there). It's not going to end well (and I say this as someone who was deep in debt in my 20's for doing the exact same thing).

@@JenPhelps My mom was very much into telling me "No, we can't afford that." My dad made good money as a programmer back in the 70s when I was in junior high and high school, but my mom went beck to college, and then grad school, and my dad was getting his MBA at night. So we had what we needed, but there were few to no extravagant purchases.

I think a lot of people might be fatigued!! Either the constant stress of the current economy, or lots of people walking around with milder versions of long covid, folks just have less energy than pre-2020/2021 to give a f about stuff that won't matter at the end of the day. Not everyone prioritizes looking nice for strangers, or even themselves (might be depressed too. And if not depressed, some areas just have a lower standard for casual comfort dressing in public.) other people might be dressing ultra casual as sort of an inverse flex, as in if you work from home or are on your day off, its a flex to NOT have to be dressed up for a job, that is on location with a dress code .

I love makeup!! I have a variety of drug store and high-end. I love doing a full beat every morning for work Makeup is therapeutic for me. I went through a rough period right before COVID, and makeup helped me at that time. I know that sounds crazy but it centered me and when I put "my face on" I could face whatever I had to deal with at the time.

I do however feel that people who look like they rolled out of bed in malls look somewhat dirty. I mean that's pretty gross to wear your PJ's out ... Spend 10 minutes to wash your face and change your clothes.

I think high end makeup sales has risen just due to the young girls/boys that get these products! Has been lot of time without me going to Sephora and I went last week and I was impressed by the quantity of young girls in the store and walking around the mall with their Sephora bags! (I'm in Mexico). And I don't have any doubts they get a lot of skincare, but they also get many brands viral on TT, like Rare Beauty, Fenty Beauty and others, because those shelves were totally empty! Makeup use won't decline, only trends change (as you already said).

Hi Jen: I use to wear a full makeup look all the years I worked. I retired during Covid, but stopped wearing makeup in the year of covid I worked. I found I would put my makeup on and most of it would wear off inside my mask, so it was just a waste to put makeup on. I now wear a tinted moisturizer and a bit of mascara and a lite blush. I am over 65 so it's not like I'm dressing up to go out to the bars or off to work. As I have got older I have focused more on skin care than makeup.

Drugstore prices are insane. I was looking at the price per ounce on concealers, and the Milani is more expensive per ounce than the Lancôme!

I suspect you’re correct that it’s the TikTok kids pushing the high end and fragrance purchases. I think skincare is up bc of the kids and the zoom insecurity issues (people thinking they look bad on camera). I think plenty of adults are smart enough to see the rip off that some high end markups are when more affordable is often just as good Love your videos!❤

I do what I need to do to make myself look better. I don’t wear heavy makeup, but I attend to all the face parts to brighten and define them. I enjoy a natural look like you’re wearing at the end of this video, Jen. I get mostly drugstore products because they’re just so good and high end is mostly a rip off. Some of the high prices are just outrageous and unwarranted. I’ll splurge if something is on sale and really special (like my ABH Nouveau palette, which I love). Makeup has trends, like everything else.

I have found myself, buying higher end makeup because I want good quality, and i want it to last along time, and not be buying all the time. My mind set it quality over quanity. I enjoyed this video!
