Hi Friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. We’re going to the chapel and we’re going to get married! But it’s not all pretty dresses and delicious cake (mmmmmm cake). In fact, a lot of the wedding traditions that we hold near and dear have a pretty dark past. In today’s episode we’ll find out why we kiss the bride, why the father gives the bride away, why bridesmaids exist and what’s with their matching dresses, and why the garter toss is even a thing.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I'd prefer small intimate weddings with the two families and close friends. I think the cringe-y weddings and activities are due to having too many random ppl there and everyone is nervous. Then it just gets weird and cringe-y. LOL.

Literally my wedding. We didn’t do any traditions that didn’t mean something personal to us. No garter toss, no bouquet toss, my Dad walked me part way down the aisle, no rice throwing, no cake smashing…. It was just a giant fun party with all our favorite people, food, and games and bounce house for the kids so they wouldn’t get bored! We bounced too though😜

The story I heard is that, since Spartan men weren't allowed to live with their wives until they were in their 30s, and started training at about 7, they had only ever really been around men. So some historians think that the hair shaving and men's clothes was supposed to ease the men into heterosexuality.

I got married two years ago during COVID and we kept it small. We did the dress, my sisters were bridesmaids, and we had a friend make us cheesecakes rather than a big wedding cake. It was more intimate and personal and we were with our nearest and dearest family members and friends. We even wanted that before COVID. We didn’t want to do the bouquet toss or the garter. We didn’t have a big dance party (just a friend with a speaker set up playing violin versions of popular music). And it was the best day ever. I’m hoping to see more of a trend that direction because for me, a lot of wanting a smaller wedding was because of cost and the icky consumerism of it all. And it ended up being absolutely perfect for us. Also-with what you said about Vegas weddings-I’d say it’s the same case with courthouse weddings too, which is so sad because those weddings can be incredibly sweet and intimate too.

Giving a diamond as an engagement ring is also rooted back to medieval times when they believed different stones held different powers of protection (described in their medical textbooks called "lapidaries"). Emeralds, for example, protected against poison, and pearls could prevent heart failure, etc etc. The diamond was believed to be the catch-all, be-all of stones, believing that it was the best overall stone to protect against most myriad of things, so to gift your new bride a diamond was to say that you were trying to protect her from most harm that could come her way.

Without the addition of the bride wearing men's attire, it's actually tradition for some Orthodox Jewish women to have their head shaved upon being wedded. Of course, they would proceed to wear a wig, but shaving the head was viewed to be the removal of an element that existed before becoming someone's wife.

Okay, this episode was so interesting to me. I loved to learn about the history of marriage, I am getting married in May 2023 to my boyfriend, on our 10th anniversary. I am from the Netherlands so my dream was to have my wedding the "American way", because the traditions in the Netherlands are quite different. You see, my fiance is going to get me from my parents place, Where I will be sleeping the evening and night before the wedding, and that is where he Will see me for the first time in my dress and all. I never really liked that idea, because I always thought that me and my dad walking down the aisle was more of a "blessing" to my dad, since I am a real big daddy's girl. Now I'm thinking, this, the Dutch way, is really sweet too. Because it's a blessing for my parents to see my husband to be, taking me to our wedding location from their house, the house I grew up in, it has something special now i think about it. Idk, I normally don't comment because I feel like I have nothing interesting to say, but now I wanted to make an exception. I litteraly cannot wait to be wedded to him, because I always thought it was an honor to be able to carry his last name, although I'm not sure if that is also done the same way I'm America? 🤔 anyways thank you Bailey for helping me see the beauty in my own county's traditions. Now I see and understand not anything, including wedding traditions, have to be the American way,! I love you so much Bailey, thanks for everything and all your hard work!!!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Definitely not trying to justify the tradition (it's horrifying!) but ancient women often started their cycles much later than modern women due to poor nutrition and other health issues.
