This audio mixing technique is a BIG one. It uses pink noise static as an EQ balancing guide. With this method you can pretty much relax and adjust your channel volumes as close to perfect as possible. But keep in mind that sometimes a "perfect" EQ balance is not what the song needs. Use this audio mixing tip at your own discretion.

Wait... This actually worked surprisingly well! I just used this trick on a 25 track mix with 2 synths, vox, backup vox, bass, drums, 3 electric guitar sounds, various fx tracks, busses... Last night I was mixing with headphones for a while and forgot to take them off. Muddles the hell out of everything, decided to try this instead of reverting back and for a somewhat complicated mix, this trick did exceptionally well. I expected a horror show, but it's in a state where most untrained ears wouldn't even question the mix quality. This also maybe opened my eyes a bit that I've been possibly mixing my vocals too quiet and drums too loud.THis trick set them quite differently than I normally would, and it sounds good.

This is the bomb. This is also a great way to access equalization since the levels are balanced. If a kik sound thin with this techqnique you'll now that it's the EQ and not the level. Extremely helpful tip. A+++ stuff.

Fantastic...enjoyed the video. I have a vintage BSR stereo frequency equalizer with a pink noise generator and microphone. VERY similar to what you just did balancing out the sound. I was able to use the microphone to balance out the room's acoustics and new set of speakers. It is truly amazing how well this works...pink noise balancing really works well. Now my system sounds more lifelike and more subtle nuances are heard.

This makes tottally sense!! I mean, pink noise represent the whole frequency spectrum based on the isophonic curves, so this could be considered as an standard end mix for the average ear. After all the previous work, taste and creativity you could apply editing track by track, either equing, compression, fx... Awesome Tip!

This is so great, thanks for sharing man! you get a good balance without listening to the actual mix, which often misleads you simply because you keep hearing the same loop over and over. this is a great way to get it right and set yourself up to hear the balance. of course, you're not done but you're at the right point with a lot of ear to spare.

example, Your ear may not always trigger the fact that midrange would sound nicer if you tic 200Hz slightly. I think it is best to tune it 20 to 20 first against pink noise, then adjust how you want to hear it. You don't want to have 250Hz at 0 dB and 300Hz jump to +9Db. That is not a smooth sounding transition, and will cause the stage to do funny things.

I've heard of this before. If you look at your mix on your master eq and you see resonant frequencies you push them back in to fit with the rest. Same principle.
@muziekmindtwister
@muziekmindtwister 7 жыл бұрын
But then you have to search and look for the specific channel, could be more then one also, better have it right from the start. Just pulling it down in a eq on the master is a really bad idea if that's what your saying. That would only pull down certain frequencies leaving other frequencies to loud in the channel thats cousing it if its initially a volume thing, this will mess up your balance.

As some people pointed out, different song genres require different "equalized" versions of pure original pink noise. I use that technique, and it works equally good from r&b to orchestral. I just wish today's sequencer software would have such automated plug-in for all tracks at once.

I think this method is actually awesome! Not for the final mix, exactly as you said -- for a premix. This technique offers an excellent starting point toward the final mix though. When you are looking for a balanced mix, there is no doubt that this technique can come in handy. Thanks a bunch for sharing your producing/engineering knowledge with the world! Please don't ever be discouraged by negative comments here. What you are doing is awesome! Aren't we all making music to make people happy, ourselves included (especially)? You rock dude! Thanks again! Your tutorial series for home studios (especially on a budget) is absolutely phenomenal and I wish you much success!
@MakeYourOwnDamnMusic
@MakeYourOwnDamnMusic 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the technique, Brent. I don't mind the negative comments. I actually have a hard and fast rule about critical viewers - if someone shows up with any BS, I check their channel to see if they actually put up any of their own music. If they don't have any, I simply ban them from my channel. If they do have their own stuff up, I leave the comment alone. You may be surprised that most of the shithead replies come from people who don't have any music up. I'd say that almost 90% to 95% of all negative comments come from those who don't have a single piece of music uploaded on their channel.

Very slick usage of Pink noise, I could see how this would be particularly useful when establishing a starting point for mixing multiple songs that have a lot of frequency variation track to track. I would be interested in seeing a LUFS comparison between several diverse tracks premixed using the pink noise as a guideline and check how the normalized uncompressed mixes of those songs compares in LUFS. Since the weight of certain frequencies can vary quite a bit, it would be interesting to see how the normalized pink noise mixes compare in LUFS between a variety of tracks.
