I have used corks in the pass but all I did was to use a sewing needle and put it threw the center of the cork and after gong threw the cork simply pull the line from the needle... and you got a float. thanks very nice ...

I have done much the same with bamboo skewers and balsa wood, but use small o-rings to attach the bobber to the line.

I made some floats last year using your method. I wanted to make some more this year and forgot. I turn mine on a Jet mini lathe. I Super Glued my dowel in place and filled the cavities with SG. After turning, I sealed the cork with SG. It is time costly, but what the heck, I have a bobber that is just as good if not better than the number one selling cork float. If I loose it, no big deal. I just make another one. My friends are always asking where I buy these floats. When I tell them I make them, they say, "NO way!" On another note. If someone want to use a tube and plan to dip them. they need to plug the openings with modeling clay, so the dip will not go inside the tube. I do this with my brass tubes when gluing them for making pens.

I've been cleaning a local river and found a bunch of corks washed up on shore and now I'm gunna use this vid and make some bobbers hopefully. Found a fishing line and a hook too so I was thinking about crafting a pole and a bobber from just stuff I find on shore.

Good work! It's amazing how such a simple device has so many ways to individualize it. This is pretty much how bobbers a were made 100 years ago. I've always made mine super functional with long 18 inch dowels to telegraph anything that touches it. If anyone is pressed for time, just skip the shaping, but shaping gives a more custom look. Leaving the cork in base configuration makes for a more rustic look. I used to use boat builder's epoxy on mine, but it's too much trouble. Spar varnish is right on. Nice drying rack. Would have never thought of clothes pins. My floats are so long I could never dip them, but I think filling a 1 inch * 20 inch long PVC pipe full of varnish would do the trick. I think that's how bamboo fly rod builder do it.

The Titebond II works very well. Cheaper that boat builder's epoxy. This will help me get more floats out faster.

Great idea! Great DIY tools! Going to make the lathe ASAP, perfect for my needs. I made some using coffee swizzle sticks for pass thru bobbers. Thought...maybe seal secure the thread w/Super Glue before painting. Purely for strength. No, they didn't look well... they look great! THANKS!

Its great idea i stumbled onto old tackle box with float like this and used a lurh genson flatfish behind it so you can stay on the stike zone or skirt the edge of the themocline parallel to the shore along the drop off floats a great and this is great way to make your own bobbers thanks so much

Sweet! Pretty crafty! I might go a cheaper route and just seal(varnish) without adding colors. Although, a bit of color could be added with permanent markers(Sharpies) before varnishing. Just a thought. (Like the lathe, too!)

A very good video, I make mine just using a hand file, small electric drill and aluminium sanding paper. No real heavy power tools required.

You can make it adjustable by putting an oring on the top and bottom of the dowel. Run the line through the orings and you can make depth adjustments while fishing.

On Amazon there is a mini lathe with little wood working tools for 39 bucks. They all was 49 but one was selling the exact same one for 39 so I ordered it and got it the next day with prime. The little lathe has 5 speeds and it has a screw looking thing that goes in the chuck that I use and the point on the other end and yes it’s cool because they all turn out different. And I do like u do in gecko and the put it back on the lathe and get some funky looking paint stripes. My hardest part is getting a perfect whole in the center

Shaping it is interesting, but I don't glue the dowel. Actually I find an old stick in the woods and jam it in the hole along with my leader. Interesting project. Thanks

Just subscribed.......fantastic video,that has given me some great ideas,to help me in my own float(bobber) making . I`m a fisherman from England who is very much into older traditional tackle and methods and making and refurbishing vintage tackle too. I`ve been making my own floats for a while now,using goose quills mostly but I want to move on to other materials such as cork. Having no specialised tools or a workshop and limited space at home,has made it a bit impossible.Your home made lathe is a great,simple idea which I`ll have to look into i think.........I'd best watch your how to construct it video !!!Many thanks for the inspiration........tight lines.

A light wood works well also. Like dry drift wood thats been painted. Any wire thats small enough works pretty well. Might want to cut a small depression around the wooden dowel and then wrap. Might want to use a plastic straw in the float hole or plastic evaporative cooler water line, for slip bobbers.

Use a whip finish to finish your thread same knot used to finish flies and then you won’t have as much wasted thread. Good job on the bobbers.

Square balsa wood easy to find and shape. Try to find hard balsa as its tighter grain

The first time I heard that balsa was a hardwood it blew my mind. I had a totally wrong idea of what hardwood and softwood meant.

@@jkalberer Yeh it is odd but there is different grades of balsa. Hard balsa not really a hardwood tho!! Just a little harder and stiffer than soft balsa. You get a bit better finish because its not so porous and open grain

@@cavekritter1 I gotcha. Balsa wood in general is a hardwood, though. I found that the difference in hardwood and softwood is in their reproduction. Hardwoods have a covering on their seeds whereas softwoods don't. Crazy.

We attach the float above the hook to keep the bait at the depth of water we want it. It lets us know when the fish are biting because you will see the bobber pull down underwater
