Can't believe I'm this old (never mind how old) and have never bothered to understand how slip bobbers work. They always just looked weird. Cork float, usually home-made with center dowel jam line adjustment has been all I've known from birth. Really well explained and using the dark thicker line was a great idea. Thanks a lot..

These are small floats kzbin.infoUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU recommend the package is smaller than my hand just to provide perspective. That said I wanted small floats for the times I need to add one when trout fishing or fishing for panfish. The peg is perfect for my application where I want a set hold point that is quickly adjustable and want to be able to add the float without retying. That’s the real advantage here. You can add this float to your line without retying and adjust the depth easily with the peg so it won’t kink your line like a traditionalit. If I need to set this too deep then I’d switch over to ait with a thread stop to make casting easier. But like I said, these are a great value for the price I paid. Probably better suited to applications where your depth is 5-feet or less for the sake of casting.

Nice presentation, thank you. Doing a similar thing in ocean fishing, we tie a small piece of smaller diameter mono on the main line with a nail knot for a stopper. It stays put but slides with a firm pull. I didn’t see it among your alternatives, so I hoped to contribute something worthwhile.

Like most who are older, we probably started with the ball bobber as this was as good as it got. Great explanation of the various types. I completely agree with you on the 4 hole stop - it is the best option on the market and definitely the one that I personally use exclusively.

Actually, if you look at the round snap on bobber you started with you can turn the wire loop (on the bottom) toward the shallow indent on the bottom. and you have a slip bobber! Each of those bobbers has 2 positions, one clips tight, the other allows the bobber to slip. Just need to use a large enough knot and stopper bead to not go through the larger loop. I do prefer the inline slip bobbers as they present less resistance to the fish. However if you don't have one of them, you can use the old ones we started with over 50 years ago.

One quick bit of advice to your audience: like you say, location is important, so if you’re casting out to a specific spot (I like to work dropoffs), a small technique will keep the setup where you intend it to be. Cast to your desired spot, then as soon as it hits the water, give it a bunch of slack line. With a long spinning rod setup, this is as simple as making an upward sweep of the rod, with the bail open. Watch how the line then travels to the bobber until it comes to the stopper, standing up the bobber. Then you can close the bail, take up any remaining slack, and wait for jaws to suck in your jig n leech! Slip bobber fishing is technical, but very simple and effective, once you get the hang of it. Thank you Sir.

You can just tie your own with 6 or 8 mono, floro, braid or what ever you have, no need to buy anything....takes 30 sec plus no need to re rig the whole thing.... just take a 10" piece of line make a loop hold with you main line, then run one end thru the loop 6 to 10 times (the more times the tighter the grip) then pull each end until the knot tightens, cinch down clip tag ends 1/8 th" and your done....

@maybonphuongtroi9281

The football rubber sometimes slide back a few feet after you reel in a fish . As the result , after fighting and catching a fish , you have to keep pushing the "foot ball " back up to the depth that you desire .

I use and prefer the string ones and the trick to get them to not loosen and work again and again, is to put just a little dab of super glue/krazy glue (cyanoacrylate) on them. Do this when you first put them on and they are tightened down. Use just enough to soak the cloth though and not glue it to your line hard. It will get glued to the line a little, but just move them a bit with your nail to release them to slide up and down the line. They will stay tight and you can use the same one many times over. They still pass through line guides fine. Just make sure the glue dries before you reel it onto the spool or cast it out cause it will cause problems if not. Super glue dries pretty fast anyway and it's a good thing to have in your tackle box anyway, cause it helps close cuts or hook pokes really well. So it serves two purposes.

Great Video!! the only question i have is, how flexable are the 4 hole ones?? i do ALOT of ultra light tackle, but i love to fish deep water Gills. that means i need a good flexable stop, so when i cast and respool the line back on, it needs to be bendable. Thank You, and Tight Lines from the 505!!
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Dave, Some of the manufacturers will have a recommendation for the size line you use with them. It has to do with the size hole on the stop itself. Like this one is for 4-8pd test and this model is for 8-12pd test. So keep that in mind. You know lately (since I did this video) I've been using the 2 hole dog bone more and more. The problem with the 4 hole is if you put a stop recommended for 8pd test on 4pd test it may slip. Then you throw low diameter braids into the mix and it can get confusing. With the dog bone, if it slips on you, you can just wrap it one more time until it holds. Now it's still true that if you move the dog bone several feet you will have to untwist the line. So I still like the 4 hole for large depth changes as long as it's matched up to your line correctly. I've used both styles on 4pd mono, it's been awhile, but I don't remember any issues. (just get the right size 4 hole for the line your using) Thanks for watching, I hope this helps and let me know how it all works out for you, KPO.

Extremely informative on most all slip-bobber stops. I really enjoy your videos. I use the string slip knot style stop and wet it before I crank down on it and then cut the ends. I use 15 to 20 lb braid (about 6 lb mono diameter) for most all of my slip-bobber fishing and the string holds well to the braid. I’d like to try the slip stop that you use. The football type hangs up on my guides and moves position almost every cast (with braid).

I hadn't seen how to use anything but the 2-hole slip setup. I dearly hate the line twisting when I make BIG depth changes. So now I'll be looking into using the 4-hole slip setup to see how it works and stands up. And since we do fish in fairly shallow water quite a bit of the time AND I do still have some clip-on bobbers I think I'll try working with those the next time we go out for shallow fishing. Thanks for the very informative video.

Been a nomad fishing Perch in any ocean with a pleasant beach! I recently went fishing in a small reservoir behind some dams in Northern California. Where I learned to fish. I couldn’t catch anything because of competition. I was the only person with a traditional bobber. Took me all day to realize that slip bobbers exist. I just thought that it was an aerodynamics problem because I just could not get it out there far enough. Well thank you!! These bobbers change everything!!!

In early April my family are going on vacation to an area near lots of good river and lake fishing spots, and our daughter is excited about using her very own rod & reel for the first time. She really wants to see what happens when you actually catch a fish. She almost 7 so I’m hoping that rigging a slip bobber will give her a good shot at it /vs/ cast & retrieve, which she is still learning to do repeatedly. Unfortunately it’s been years since I went fishing with serious intent to catch fish, and I have never rigged a slip bobber. Your discussion and demonstration are very clear and useful. Thank you! I will try to remember to update this comment after we return with our experience.

@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors Hello, thank you again for the instructions on slip bobbers. Adjusting the four-hole bobber stop was just as easy as you showed it to be. Daughter caught her first fish on her very own - chose how deep she wanted me to set the bait, cast it herself where she said she thought the fish were, waited and watched the bobber as the fish nibbled, then set the hook and reeled in. None of the fish we caught were greater than 6” but she had a great time, and we live near some good fishing areas so we should be able to pull in some keepers during spring and summer.

Another excellent video, I like your style. I'm going to have to try some of those 4-hole stops. I use the string/knot stops and they're great, when they work properly. I've had them come loose or knot up too...
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors

Within the 4 hole style there is actually different holes sizes for different pound test line (line diameter). Some brands don't designate a pound test but others do. Heaver pound test line sometimes won't fit the smaller holed ones and lighter pound test may slip in the larger holed ones. Generally I've found 6 to 12 pound mono works with all of the 4 hole styles I've used. I mentioned it in the vid, but if you don't adjust your depth very much the dog bone (2 hole) ones are also a good option. Thanks for the comment. KPO

The red four hole bobber stops are the only ones that work for ultra-light spin reels and rods for stream trout and panfish. I routinely use 2 - 4 pound test .005" diameter line so I need the slip bobber rig to go on and off the reel smoothly and without kinking the fine spin fishing line. Thanks so much for showing the various slip float products and the strengths and weaknesses of each.

@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors , tried this for the first time the past weekend. The rubber bobber made it impossible to cast. The think 4-hole stopper was good maybe 50% of the time. Had do you overcome that? With the stopper on the reel the line can't run out. Also, what is that actual technique? Cast it out... then pull in in a foot and let it sink, repeat, etc? The bobber gets closer to the boat each time. Had one pole with the rubber bobber, just jigged that right off the back of the boat, no cast. We got many hits, the fish ate up all the worms... our jig hook size was WAY too big.

Thank you for this and your honesty with the bobber stops. I use and have used the four hole stopper for a couple of years and found it to work great then I set it up a new Okuma rod with the four hole bobber stop and found out the stop has a hard time passing thru the end guide. No most of the time it will not go threw the end guide with ease as it is just to small. I came here looking for a solution and it looks like the solution will be to change the end guide on the rod as I do like the stop. Thank you for you help.

Thanks for a good basic video. I thought you would close it out with a rubber band knot. I've used that for decades. It passes through the spool and the guides with no problem. Now recently learned to tie a bobber stop knot with doubled braid, not the super which is too thin. Dacron would be better. The braid works well but if it's too tight it passes through the bead but not though the bobber. Learning to tie that knot with doubled slippery braid will test one's vocabulary.
