You knocked it out of the freaking park dude. Your writing and editing has come such a long way since the first Makima video and I honestly couldn't be more impressed with how good this came out; easily one of the best analyses on Makima's character. (especially that *editing* bro, I have no clue what kind of voodoo magic you used, but it was CLEAN AF). I dunno if it's weird to say that I'm proud of you, but that's the only word I can really think of to describe how I feel right now, and honestly you should be proud of yourself, man. I really hope this video blows up because you freaking deserve it and more people need to see this. ...I wanted to leave a nice comment, but before this gets too parasocial imma dm you to properly congratulate you lol (b^_^)b

Makima’s story pace is perfect. In My first and second read, I felt confused about her actions in the final acts. However, when reading with Makima focus through the whole story, I realize it is well written. Also, here are some notes that you miss First, we know Makima is not a good person simply because she is perfect, contrasting with the chaotic rest of the group. If the rest are good people, then her perfectionist is a sign of evil. Then, in every single act, we keep being reminded that she is hiding something from us, and that we should stay out of her, over and over again. Second, about her back story, we do not have much because its actually her backstory. Being raised by the government, she is told to become their dogs, to stop thinking and do her job. Since she always does what she is told to do, there would be no backstory. This makes her sus because she is too perfect by other perception, cuz they know there is not such a perfect person. Third, about her necessary evil, that is exactly her job. She is evil to Denji and everyone because in order for her mission to succeed (peace), others must suffer. Its like a trolly problem when you have to decide between letting 1 person die, or 2 people die, and in her case, she will always choose the 1-person, even that person is her relative. Thats why she is angry and sad when 2 times her plans fail, and the only she regrets that is ‘there would be more casualties than expected’. Fourth, she did treat everyone as a tool, that is correct. However, she is only does that when NECESSARY, not all the time. And because of the dark world, the tragic situation of Devil Hunter and all the reasons depicted in your video, she has to choose to make them as a tool. In the drinking scene, you open up by losing your control, losing yourself to let other accept the real you. She cannot do that, because she is the control devil. For other, that creates a big distance, but for her, she truly think the drink is delicious. Then, there is a contrast: she does not like to meet the scary higher up and she looks out of the windows thinking about the yesterday delicious drink, and you realize, that maybe the the think she really wants: relationship with each other, a thing she could not have in her position. Finally, if you read carefully, you will know that Makima NEVER lies through the whole story. Everything she said is the truth, but what you think from that is the truth or not is another matter. Because of that, she does not have to lie. For example, when Aki tells her to make a contract trading his everything to save Power and Denji, she makes a contract to give Aki power. Within Aki’s perception, he automatically understands that he would use that power to save them both, but in return that power is used as a foundation to kill Power and traumatize Denji. Thats why, ‘if she says the snow is white, it is a lie’.

Huge props to you, man. This has to be my favourite Makima character analysis. Other KZbinrs have touched most of the points you made in this video and helped me understand her character conceptually ; be it how essential she was to other characters' arcs, or how her experiences shaped her into an altruistic nightmare with a longing for deep emotional bonds. [For instance, I really enjoyed Kyle Robes' and Hiding in Public's and would highly recommend these to any Chainsaw Man fan]. Even so, this is the first time a video made me reminisce the tragedy of Makima in such a poignant and intimate manner. This might sound a little disturbing to some people : but, to me, Makima is the most relatable character in Chainsaw Man. If I didn't have such a strong cognisance of my emotions and didn't have very uplifting people irrupt into my life, I could very well have become a single-minded man, driven by a misguided ideal to maximize happiness in the world (because of my desire for real connections and mutual understanding, which was ironically, yet in a sensible way, what made me very distant out of fear). The major difference between me and Makima resides in the fact that the transitional phase into my depressive state was detachment as a defence mechanism against paranoia and angst. Meanwhile, she probably never had to detach herself, since she was never able to connect in the first place. Of course, we can call the Chainsaw Man an exception, but it is more so the idealized version she has of him that serves as a vessel for projection. Anyhow, I'd say the turning point for Makima was taking control in an attempt to fulfil her abstruse desire. But since she hadn't the slightest understanding of her feelings, she could merely push the only ideal of good she had known to its extreme ; this ideal being a governmental conception of collective happiness through cohesion and longevity. Still, to both of us, all of this came from a form of neglect, outer expectations and, ultimately, a reliance on perfection to give value to one's existence. And that is ultimately why I find Makima's fate to be especially heart-wrenching. Before dying, she realized that she was unable to adjoin her existence to anything. The reason's quite simple, through the shattering of her idealized version of Chainsaw Man, she understood that, for her entire life, she sought after an illusion. And what I saw, was someone who had convinced themselves of the only lie that can not become truth, that is to say : perfection. Honestly, if it weren't for Nayuta's existence, Makima would have the most depressing character arc I've ever encountered in manga, alongside Phosphophyllite from Land of the Lustrous.

Man you were interesting to read! Tell me if I've got it right: Because you relied strongly on what gave meaning to your life you became single-minded, this making you unable to connect with others due to the fact those people didn't correspond to your ideals. And Makima could've never get recovered from that like you did because it was too late. It's what I've summarized right?

But what I think that could've been the worst case scenario is that Makima despite her upbringing and disconnection from others actually cared for or loved others. See, there are different ways to see what the interactions between Denji and Makima were but if we were to assume there was actual kindness and not just manipulation, and taking into account monologues in where Makima assumably claims that human kind adore/love her, it is well concluded for me that her ideals maybe weren't the only problem. Makima seems to care about the ones she sees lesser than her due to the motive of her actions, but she gives much importance to their relative positions in the power hierarchy (due to her ideals). This would mean that even if she were capable of accepting people as they are leaving ideals apart she would still be unable to truly fulfill her desire. I want to put a real life fact like how kids that hasn't been properly socialized before the age of 4 can't recover from that and result socially undesirable. With this I'm trying to say how some things must be done before it gets too late. Maybe Makima was still able to get to grow a familiar relationship when she was younger even under government's custody and it's power based ideals. But since during her childhood there wasn't anyone who could've fulfill the role of a family it got way too late when she reached adulthood, leaving a hole that couldn't be filled not even by throwing away the ideals of how an equal relationship should be Also have to mention that it gets more and more difficult to make friends as you get older due to the increasing differences between you and the people that surround you, making adding new people to your intimate circle more difficult. So the Makima we got to know in the story probably had no any other choice to be happy but to stablish connection with an equal, because it was just too late to give this problem a solution that works for everyone. And so the best that could've be done was to kill Makima, and let it reborn as Nayuta, like a new chance. Btw great video you did here 👍

Call me crazy but I think Makima and Yujiro from Baki have many common things in their character: -They want the protagonist to become their equal so they can fulfill their desire of finally obtaining a family/rival -Strongest in their respective universes -Both serves as parental figure to the teenage protagonist and even made them cry by giving fatherly/motherly love via headpat -They give much importance to power and strength and because of that they're absent of society's moral values and it is also their main struggle/tragedy. -Both did horrible things to the protagonist -Both were described as angelical beings but are actual demons

The writing of her character was truly incredible. We don’t need an explicit backstory nor her inner thoughts to exactly understand her character because everything was given to us within the layers of the story. We can perfectly understand what her past and upbringing was like through imagining an antithesis to Nayuta’s life now, we can also find bits of her inner self through the scenes mentioned in the video and through other really small moments that are usually brushed over and finally through Pochita’s view of her. Her character was supposed to be conveyed in such an underlying and mysterious way even after her reveal and its only through the scattered clues and details that we can put together a complete understanding of her.

When I started reading the manga I already got spoiled that "Makima is a BAD", I didn't know how or what she's gonna do and I was really glad that Fujimoto made her an unpredictable enigma, not to mention characters speaking about killing her without really explaining why. throughout the story she was really the Deus Ex Makima, always knew what to say to balance Denji backup, and I really liked that about her being the even tho I knew that at some point this character will be bad. I'll keep it short, there were many reasons that I liked her, many of them you mentioned in this video, but what was so intresting to me is how weird it made me feel, I like and liked many characters before, but I've never felt conflicted or as conflicted about it as I did with makima, because of her actions. You have tackled something interesting there in saying that a her twist being evil seem to have been predictable by many readers, and to that I believe (as someone educated in story telling), that many viewers/readers look at it through the eyes of what they are - A reader, and forget about what, when and most importantly how the information of an revelation or twist is presented to the characters, and their reaction, likewise their action is towards that specific revelation. People are lost so much in this concept of that anything good HAS TO BE unpredictable, they loose the touch for what story telling, the author intends - THE HOW. We as the reader or audience know all information whenever we want - we are nearly equal to the omniscient author, the characters aren't, thus how they are impacted, as well as changed by that very twist makes up the "quality" of that twist from the perspective of story telling. For example: In my first watch of Shutter Island I slowly had it figured out that Andrew was connected to the psychiatry, even that he may be an inmate, but never imagined the twist at "the HOW" it was presented and executed, how it impacted Andrew, and what reaction he would give by his stories needs and wants to follow a negative, a positive or even an open change. That was the masterful craft, not that I couldn't predict it. If Makima does that (waiting for the Anime), then she is written greatly, and regarding any topic, the argument of "Buhu, predictable" falls flat when you never considered this aspect at all. Not the goal is the journey, but the road to it, and how the CHARACTERS first, THEN the audience view it is important,

Honestly I finished the series a few weeks ago, she honestly didn’t seem good or evil at all, more like a sociopath or somebody with a god complex, she made it clear, she saw people the same way as dog’s, and treated them that way. (Her first appearance literally telling the guy he will be her dog, and he can only say woof, and yes or else she will just put him down like a dog), sure we see her meeting up with her employees, but I think they said it themselves that they know nothing about her, only going on her actions.

For being in control, the embodiment of one, to what extent is dangerous. Both human and machine like performance in manipulating or being kind. So when her character shifts the balance has an impact if you see it, the fact that she could be unpredictable while having good intentions would make her more than the necessary evil or the twisted human. Not sure how to describe it, but in a vague name calling her the “mother of nature”

Yooooo..... I'm not gonna fucking lie.. After watching this video I realized there was a part of me that didn't want to look further than her evil actions. Even after the Nayuta introduction, I wanted to consider them separate ideas completely because I didn't want to believe in the possibility that Makima could've ended up in a better place. I may have simply wanted my anger for all the atrocities she committed to feel justified by her just simply being the most evil being in existence... Well, I don't think she or the control devil was ever good-hearted. I kinda like to think of Askelad from Vinland Saga, a man who I see as fundamentally evil at his core but someone who also had a dream, cast upon him by his dying mother, of ideal good that inspired him and caused him not to fall completely into the depths of his nature. This video made clear and forced me to LOOK and to accept that Makima probabpy just never had a single good thing to learn from, growing up. I think I knew deep down, but I still needed a little push to accept it. To accept that Nayuta just might be able to grow up with some good in her heart. To hope for it. Like I said, I think I always knew it deep down, but was simply unwilling to look for it. Its not to say that scenes like the train moment where she feels nostalgic over the prior nights drinks and the tear scene on the movie date just didn't mean anything to me. They DID stick with me. And in the anime, that train scene was the only time I heard emotion or tonality in her voice. She even expressed dread toward the idea of meeting the bigwigs. She was more genuine in that moment than any other time in the series. Honestly I even found value in the fact this vulnerability was with just a seemingly insignificant coworker. It was simply a moment where she felt the desire to open up a little and express something, no ulterior motive or manipulation involved. It contrasts the moment where she sorta indirectly commands Kurose and Tendo to join her division and work for her. She says "That's a shame. There are so many good restaurants in Tokyo" (ignore the awful cartoon villain anime translation). Here, food is used, not to form connections or show vulnerability, but basically condemn them to serving her. A pretext to controling them. Yet, why even bring up food again at all? Million other ways to say "stay and work for me" after all... I honestly wouldnt be surprised if she was a little bitter over the attack. Like yeah she anticipated the attack, but I'd always wondered if she felt some anger over her moment of honesty being disrupted. And after this video it really clued me into the idea that she probably really wished she could've enjoyed her life a bit more. Even more telling that her moment of honesty was disrupted by her own plan in pursuit of power to create her better world etc. Turns out it was a sign that her desired future wasn't what would truly make her happy. Living a generally crappy life with scary bosses, but occasionally being able to enjoy drinks and good food with others was. The single decent movie after a string of bad movies was. Essentially, a normal life. She really wanted the city mouse life. She was never the country mouse. Reze had this issue too. She eventually made her switch, but Makima killed that.

I'm glad Fujimoto never went the direction 95% of other mangaka would've went and given her some sobby backstory thru flashbacks or inner monologues. This really forces viewers to LOOK. It tests the character of the reader. And clearly I came out to be someone initially unwilling to see despite what I saw.

Did Makima want to get rid of Death, War, and Hunger, or did she just want Chainsaw Man for herself?
@Asuraai
@Asuraai 2 жыл бұрын
Both, her surface goal was to have total control over reality. Her deep desire was to finally have an equal, which was the "chainsaw man" she envisioned.

The way I interpreted her goal was that she wanted to get rid of what essentially makes humans weak and imperfect to make them more equal to herself because if she was going to beat csm and control him, she will no longer view him as an equal to her and she wanted to use his power for her goal.

To ask the question to forgive her is tough, but at the end of the day; she's not a human. Holding her to human values when she was (presumably) abused and groomed to be a weapon by the government doesn't seem very fair. Especially when you take the fact that she's a Devil. I haven't read much of part 2 yet, but I'm curious to see how Nayuta shapes. If Nayuta is capable of being close with humans, whether she sees herself as superior but not viewing humans as pets, etc. will be interesting. Either way, imagine if you could give every pet long, happy, lives. They live as long as us, healthy, happier than ever. No more shelters, strays, etc. But to do so you have to kill and use some along the way. Yeah, it'd be awful to do so, but at the end of the day... you're making life better for the rest. That's how she viewed it. And to hold someone who doesn't view themself as human to human morals just doesn't work. I truly don't know if she can feel kindness, joy, love, etc. the same way we can, but I'm assuming she can, it was just impossible for her to due to how she was raised to view her power. Perhaps being raised right she'll be able to feel those things with humans. And then, she would not make decisions Makima made, which I believe therefore shows how Makima may not be completely absolved and "forgiven" but definitely not despised.

I'm not sure if I would've been able to predict Makima's twist if I hadn't looked up her age after her weird scenes with Denji. Still enjoyed the reveal tho.

I think the people who immediately knew she was evil experienced something bad in their life already, so they're already on edge and mistrust characters/people. I have trust issues, so I never thought she was going to be a good character.

I like Makima very much exactly cause she is so evil, I don't understand why we have to find a reason to forgive her...... She is the character of a manga and she is a devil, indeed, a very powerful devil!! She can't have relations because her nature is to feel herself better of all the others, this is her power generator!!! This isn't caused by the way she has been raised, this is the nature of the Control Devil. She is born in this way, her way living is this, there's nothing to do. The fact that she is so extrmely nasty and cold is the caracteristic that makes genious this character ......and the reason why I'm in love with her.....😈😂

Everyday that passes I’m more hyped and also more afraid of the anime adaption of Chainsaw Man. The community is going to be so toxic and is going to ruin everything that we love about this series. I’m already seeing the cringe Twitter crop edits with copy right music.

{spoilers} Makima or female Griffith, when I first saw her in story i did not trust her. She offered too much of a good deal while being too ready for violence, she claimed to value chainsaw so much but she didn't respect it's wish for Denji and that's why she lost the real tragedy of it is her up bringing she was brought up by bad peps and became pretty terrible herself deserving the fate that she ultimately got, but that doesn't make up for all the things that she did to people that believed in her or worked for or along side her.

it's upto your interpretation if she was mimicking Denji or if it was genuine. Initially on first viewing it doesn't seem like she's actually crying, but after her true desire is revealed it makes it seem much more genuine.

I mean she has a very serious demeanor. You’re acting like every single page she appears in she’s not wearing any clothes and giving fans service. Service-level people see it as a serious character but if you read the manga you get the joke that she is hot

Thing is, Makima was chasing that ideal of chainsaw man, because he was her equal, if not superior. She was so obsessed with the concept she idolized that she was unable to realize that Pochita was willing to change by his own choice. However, Denji did what true chainsaw man in Makima’s eyes would do - slashed her and ate, the way that Makima described as the greatest honor. And with that being said, I believe that she saw Denji as someone who became that what she was looking for this whole time, thus, acknowledging him.

You say makima isn’t evil because she has a Machiavellian sense of justice, performing evil acts for a good cause. I think that she’s still evil in the end because she’s trying to rule the world as an all powerful dictator, she may think she’s making a better world, but it’s a better world from her perspective, it’s why she’s the greatest enemy of the United States, because America understands that power corrupts and that if one dictator can make all the decision for the world, then the world will ultimately be worse. Plus, she wants to erase death, which would kinda suck for everyone, imagine how many people would exist if we can’t die, then we would also all be immortal even if we want life to end. Endless life leads to suffering, it’s why the eternity devil is so scary, because people understand that an eternity is too long too live
