I'm proud to be a Gretsch owner. I have a Gretsch 6122-1959 Country Gentleman. I've been a Chet Atkins fan for early fifty years and there is absolutely nothing that matches this for sheer tone quality. Every guitar has it's own niche like the Fender Telecaster for example. but for beautiful sound, nothing, and I mean nothing can touch that great Gretsch sound.

I recently bought a Gretsch Rancher Falcon wide body, and I am thrilled with the sound and the look. In a forest of Gibsons and Martins, my Gretsch stands out.

That's a nice guitar you've got there! "That great Gretsch sound" is a slogan that Gretsch uses to describe their guitars. It stems from the way Gretsch builds their guitars, the electronics they use, and other unique characteristics that makes Gretsch guitars different from other brands. There isn't a particular amp setting to achieve "that great Gretsch sound", because it is inherent in your guitar. Thanks for your question and keep rocking!

Oh, I have seen Glen Campbell playing behind his head (must have been about 1962) and I think someone else in the 50s also (don't remember who). So how people play 'nowadays' is relative.

Disappointed you failed to mention Duane Eddy he made the 6120 for rock and roll.

1958, that's the year the music died. So almost all the vintage rockabilly -- that played on Gretsches -- was played thru (DeArmond) single coils. Even though Travis played a Gibson Super 400 with p90s, Holly played a Strat with single coils, Joe Mathis played a Moserite custom wound, and Chuck Berry played an es350 with p90s, almost everyone else played gretsch with DeArmond single coils. If so, what's all the fuss about how great PAFs and filtertrons are???
@whimpypatrol55033 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite pickups are the hilo'trons. I think they came out in the 60s and are humbucker tech. But I don't know if they would sound good in just any guitar.

Totally possible for a CT scan to have been done, but a MRI would have trashed the guitar.
@daddyhotrock4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I am a guitarist as well as a radiographer. For CT, the metal parts would create significant scatter which makes it hard to create a useful image. However, an MRI scan is out of the question. Even if you removed all the metal, the neck rod would still be in there. This would make the whole thing fly through the room as soon as you entered. Any MRI institute would have stopped you way before that. Anyway, a little camera at the end of a flexible rod would reveal much more.

All this talk about Chet Atkins and the early Gretsch days is fine and dandy...but you want to know who really put Gretsch on the map? George Harrison and the Beatles. It was the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 that first displayed that 'Great Gretsch Sound' to the whole world when the Beatles performed live. Gretsch sales went through the roof after that performance. George Harrison played that guitar in every Beatle concert in every major city around the world. Now you know the whole truth...and not mentioning George Harrison and the Beatles is very disingenuous.
