Brush clearing a hunting lease for some high hourly rate, but once you break it down, how much did my business REALLY make?

Glad to hear you're running ethanol free fuel. That's all I try to run in my small engines and such.

great info. many just here a price and never think of how much you really are keeping of that price that gets ate up by the expenses. Expenses can even mean dead time. Very informative thanks

As a land manager for timberland properties in NC, SC, and VA, I appreciate the effort when the hunt lease folks maintain the properties. They definitely win some double fudge brownie points with me. And when the work is solid, I absolutely ask who did it and if they want more paying work like it. Granted, a lot of this work is done with a small farm tractor and/or skid steer with a brush mower, so the guy with the dixie chopper probably won't get more work out of me. Doing the Lord's work out there 👍

This year for 2024 I plan on taking a John Deere 930 zero turn and custom building it with a 6 ft cut bush hog deck with stump jumper underneath it , so it can mow everything down it came run over.

@randyjennings7507 There is nothing better than me inspecting a property a couple times a year and always finding the paths mowed. Those clubs are remembered if/when other properties come up for lease, and are offered the first opportunity to lease more land.

True costs are real, as in this specific business, you are in a business loaded with consumables. Not to mention time, as you noted, "I may be driving down that dirt road for 30 minutes to get to the job."

Brad, I have seen enough of your videos to have a general idea of the size limitations of your personal property but wouldn't it make sense at some point to rent a storage place near your house and have a fully loaded trailer(enclosed) to keep all the gear you need for a job such as this one? That is what I would be thinking long term. I guess cleanup and maintenance of the equipment is still an issue.

I included "setup" and "finished" process with the minimum charge. It doesn't matter if I work 2 minutes, or the entire hour the minimum covers. That's for small quick jobs. Larger jobs have a half day minimum charge like you do. Most everyone is understanding about it when you break down what you have to do just to come work for them. I enjoy talking with clients, but talking about the job and just shootin the bull is also different. If it takes half the time just explaining every little detail about what you're doing, that should be charged time. If it takes half the time just talking about hunting or fishing, then that's your choice to do so.

I love how you picked out Chads posts about him bragging about what money he’s made. And the sad thing is, on a lot of the jobs he brags about, he is selling himself short 🤦‍♂️ thanks for keeping it real Brad

I wonder what overhead and startup capital is for a service company like this. I know regiins are all diffrent but I'm intrested in 1) equipment capital. assuming I don't get KZbin gifts what is a good minimum capital inveatment 2) depreciation on equipment how much will I burn through 2) monthly fixed overhead things like business licenses business insurance any invoicing/billing software you pay for I feel like with a good mower and the pickup and van I already have I could get started but have no Idea what the cost would be before I could establish a regular customer routine. I would be happy starting small and growing slow but I dont know how small is practical.

Long time pro here. Do a start up spreadsheet, cash flow projection, break even sheet,,& budget as the beginning of the idea process. You will then come up with the math that works for you. Every business idea will have different numbers. Check the community college system in your area to see if they offer services for small businesses.

To go from my house to the office? No. However, if I am required to use my POV for work travel then, yes, I am paid to get to that work obligation (mileage plus salary). Someone who is self employed/working in this line of work is no different than the latter. It’s not free to mobilize that equipment for a job.
