I'm making a replacement tailstock for a 1940s Delta wood lathe. I needed a MT in the quill. Did it with my taper attachment on a PM1440HD lathe. That type of taper attachment has the disadvantage of not starting the taper right away. It needs to take up the little bit of slack that is needed to prevent binding before it actually starts cutting the taper. With the very shallow MT taper it takes about .8" of travel. Annoying but it works. I like your air cylinder better. I used the DRO to set the taper attachment. By using 5" of travel instead of 1" I got a very good fit first try. I'll be casting the main body in silicon aluminum alloy (Alloy car wheel.) My back yard casting can't get hot enough to melt cast iron. Thanks for the nice video.

Really enjoying your videos. Great job explaning the steps your taking in the builds and theediting. The 4x speed is a nice touch.Looking forward to your next project , please keep them coming.

At first I was lost I skipped ahead heard compressed air saw what looked like two carriages and then when you showed it following the taper set on that rear bar I said “whoa this dude is Jesus” hehe. Brilliant idea and tutorial my fellow lathe enthusiast. Thanks for putting in the time to share what you know via this damn good video. I’d shake your hand if the world wasn’t stricken by a pandemic: Have to settle for a verbal. “Dude! Friggin niiiiice.” Don’t forget to add Boston accent:

Who makes the indicator you have magneted to the lathe bed for your saddle?

When you have to knock it out, it's a good fit. Good work keep it up. Old Bob

That worked really nice. I watched the tracer video too real nice, love the use of the air cylinder. I noticed your comment about the condition of your spindle taper. Check first to see If the spindle is hardened. If so and you can prove a taper you machine, you could turn up a lap and roll some diamond into it. Works nice to chase away dings. Or if you're brave you could hard turn it possibly. One thing might be worth checking. Stick an indicator on the rails that holds the template and take a cut, be nice to have an idea of any deflection that might mess with your cut dimensions. All the best.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I'll have to check if its hardened or not, I would have guessed it is. I'm too scared to hard turn it but lapping it is a good idea. I'll check the deflection next time I use it. Thanks!

I appreciate your thorough explanations. My lathe didn't come with a carriage lock. I don't see one on yours either. I'd like to make a request for an upcoming video on making one please as I trust yours would help me best in copying it.
@BuildFixCreate6 жыл бұрын
I actually already have one, you can see it being used in a couple of my other videos. The carriage that the tracer attachment is built on doesn't have one because for that, there isn't really a need for it. Check out mrpete he might have a video on building one!

Dude that freaking lathe is sooo bad ass I'm a combo pipe welder by trade, but I got to play on a lathe at a plant I worked on. I fell in love, now I've bought a little atlas 618. Please do a video on that lathe, that thing is way cool gear box and all. Nice build btw I subbed.

@@BuildFixCreate Yes please do a video on your lathe explaining the work that went into restoring it, and a shop tour of your other machinery would be great.

The Federal indicator is reverse reading. You can tell this because the scale increases in the counter-clockwise direction and the small dial points to 0 (zero) when the plunger is all the way in, rather than out. This makes it well suited for measuring depths using a base that looks something like the foot of a depth micrometer. assets.suredone.com/1742/media-pics/114972-federal-p61s-depth-step-metric-dial-indicator-01mm-7.jpg I've got one like that with the adjustable foot and it's a lot easier to use than a depth mic for slots and such within its range. You could probably put together a suitable foot for that one with a clamping screw or whatever, for measuring things like keyways and maybe dovetail depth etc. :)

For 60degree how much we turn the angle of compound rest
@ki4glx6 жыл бұрын
30° you are cutting 1 face so divide the angle you want in half.
