Making a 90s Banger with the Yamaha TX81Z!

Күн бұрын

This week we're going to take a quick look at the Yamaha TX81Z which was an affordable 1U FM synthesizer released in 1987.
Whilst other FM synths are more revered, (DX1, DX5, DX7) the TX81Z made a name for itself because it contains sounds (particularly the "Lately Bass" preset) that became favourites for producers in the late 80s and early 90s.
In fact, the "Lately Bass" equivalent on the earlier DX100 called "Solid Bass" was equally popular. I've listed a few well known songs that used either of those versions of the sound below.
In this video we use that patch (and others) as well as related sounds to make a (not very serious) track in the style of the era.
Sounds / gear used:
Yamaha TX81Z (with Stereoping controller)
Roland Cloud TR-909
Roland TB-303 (midi modded)
Arturia KeyStep Pro
AMS DMX 15-80S
Roland Juno-6
Korg M1 Organ patch
Vocals recorded with an AKG C414S
//
Lately bass / Solid bass examples:
Orbital - Chime
Whigfield - Saturday Night
Ultra Nate - Free
Technotronic - Get Up
Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own (1993 remix, not the original)
Real McCoy - Another Night
Inner City - Good Life
Black Box - Ride On Time
Culture Beat - Mr Vain
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme
Tony Scott - That's How I'm Living
Color Me Bad - I Wanna Sex You Up
Madonna - Express Yourself
Ace of Base - All That She Wants
Janet Jackson - What Have You Done For Me Lately
Bizarre Inc - I'm Gonna Get You
Corona - The Rhythm of the Night
Haddaway - What is Love

@@kenzo9900 Initially I thought "No, you're wrong" because at the beginning the bass is mixed with some sub-bass coming from other synth and mixed sound combined don't have this typical 'click' from Lately Bass. But later there is the part without sub-bass and it sounds very much like Lately Bass.

I notice people always try to make fun of people having a good time, acting a fool or just generally let it all hang out in footage from the 80s and 90s, I can tell you from someone who lived it, it was infinitely better than the past 20 years where everyone is so self conscious and afraid to express themselves so people just stand around now barely nodding their heads or giving any indication that they’re enjoying the music at all or holding up a phone. There is no amount of video footage that can convey how fun and pure that era was.

Just to clarify some details - this is from discussion on Gearspace: Some FM synths (DX11/21/27/100) have the patch named 'Solid Bass' which sounds quite close to the 'Lately Bass' but it's not exactly the same. DX11 (and others) have sine-only waveforms but TX81z have sine and other additional waveforms. And beside that LatelyBass and SolidBass have significant differences in their patch parameters. The Lately Bass preset was an attempt by Yamaha's sound designers to approximate the bass sound in Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" which was a tweaked version of -- you guessed it - Solid Bass on the DX7!

In the late 80's I bought two of these for my rack and became quite adept at programming them. They were quite thin 4 op sounds that benefitted greatly from the internal effects like the chorus you added. Also stacking the same sound and detuning them one up the other down helped a lot. I was able to get very decent analog synth sounds this way.

Hi Alex, I didn’t know you owned the AMS delay. Would you consider doing a video on it? I am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and I know he used it extensively. I’ve always been curious about it’s full functionality. There has been a lot of interest, and rightfully so, in the reverb, but there isn’t a ton of info on the delay out there.

@@AlexBallMusic Will there be the various incarnations of DMX as well as the chorus controller and other rarer items of early AMS history?

Just showing the later 15-80S and fully expanded RMX16 as that's what I'll have to physically demonstrate, but I'll mention a bit if the story. It will be more of a demo than a documentary.

i've actually been surprised that there is no virtual version like an UAD or something. The RMX kinda vibe is available from UAD, it's now in 500 series, and it's non-linear algo (or derivatives) are to be found in various other hardware verbs like the Bricasti and TC M6000. But nobody seems to do some kind of DMX15...

santibanks I’m similarly perplexed that no one has emulated it as a plugin. They were very prevalent in the 80s and it’s hard to find a plugin that does exactly what they were said to do (per the manual and online accounts of the sounds you can get out of it).

The chorus and reverbs sound inauthentic for the era. A little less reverb on the vocals would have been nicer too. Has a great dirty sound of it's own though. Just a couple tweeks in the mix, but especially on the effects, and it would be a A+ track.
